I've tried a few coils. Wiring diagrams confuse me. I'm looking at it and trying to figure out where the issue may be. Any ideas where I should look? I'm thinking wires but not sure which wires to check.

So it was the distributor huh?  Do those 123 dizzy's have a condensor inside you can replace?  Perhaps it went bad on you.  I've had a couple dizzy's go bad due to the condensor, and its a quick cheap fix.

Neb

Thank you much Joltfreak! That and a few other things posted on MM helped me figure it out. Still don't have a tester but I have spark. Now if I can get the timing set and Dist in and not 180 out.

not that I've seen. I'll check it after I have her running with the other dizzy. Non of my cars are starting right now and I need one up so I can go check on a few possible work options.

You should know if its 180 out pretty quick I would think.

Neb

She's firing up!!! But she won't stay running ??? Idles slow for up to 5sec. then stops.
Neb

Plugs in the right order now?

Neb

Plugs are in the right order and she's running. I messed with the fuel mixture and managed to get her to sustain idle on her own. Adjusted the timing till it idled smooth but appears advanced with a timing light. Burning rich now as well. At least I have a starting point for tuning her back up. Now to order those dang bushings so the engine doesn't beat the carb. to death or tear anything else up.

Lean it slowly till it about shuts off, then two turns rich and you should be set pretty close.  Once you take it for a drive you'll know for sure if it needs adjusted more.  Get your timing set and you're good to go.

Neb

It appears I had it WAY rich. More than I thought. Claudia is now at a nice steady idle, still need to lean out the fuel more and play with the timing a bit, but I need a break/nap. Can't take her out on the road because the Ghia is blocking her in the garage and I need at least one more person to help push her (Baby the Ghia) out of the way.

Dan you still interested in a Ghia? Cheap! It's still a full project and I know you've been avoiding that. LOL Even needs a rebuild on the engine. I stole quite a few parts from it for the Bug (Suzy).

Someday maybe, but not today.  Glad you got it running.  If it was way too rich and still runs kinda funky after you get the timing set, you may have fouled the plugs too.

Neb

Well, the Mini starts and runs then when I let it cool down I have to tinker with the fuel and timing for 15-30 min. before it will start back up. Since I have an electric fuel pump installed I'm going to pull the mech. pump to see if that does anything. If it doesn't I'll work on the other carb. If that doesn't work I'll be stuck. Seems like since I got the spark back I may have a fuel issue.
Neb

As long as the electric is pumping fuel I wouldn't mess with it.  Sounds like you may have fouled plugs.  Get a new set of 4 at autozone, make sure the mixture is lean and timing is set, and throw them in there and gradually richen it till it runs strong.

Neb

That's the thing. I'm not sure if I'm getting a proper fuel supply. When it was running if I hit gas it would hesitate. Ease into it and it was fine.

Ok, if you floor it and it hesitates and gives you a bogged down feeling, reach in there and rich the carb and try again.  Do this untill it smoothes out.  If it never smoothes out you may have other problems.  You could see if it improves when you pull the choke as well.

joltfreak

How much fuel pressure are you running at?
it should be 2-3 psi max. get yourself a inline fuel pressure gauge to see where your at. if it's too high than the carb float will not be able to keep fuel from bypassing it and causing you to run very rich. you should only need one pump going to fuel any mini motor (i went with an electric pump). if you are running at a higher psi than you may need to get a fuel pressure regulator. the mini needs very little fuel pressure to run. when i was running in my motor on the my buddies test stand we never even used a fuel pump we had our fuel tank sitting higher than the motor and it was gravity fed. no issues!
