Hs4 carb spacer??

Hey guys..
Noob here...
Just getting ready to start this 998 for the first time and I am fitting the carb on the intake manifold but it appears that there will not be any room for the air filter.   I got the setup on but had to take out the bottom stud and then thread that in once the carb was placed on the upper stud.  Am I supposed to be running a spacer between the carb and manifold or leave it out?   I can't find any good image references.

It seems to vary a bit.  I've seen some running just a single gasket between the carb and manifold and others with varying thickness spacers.

What carb does it have? Every one I've seen has a spacer....

998 with an HS4 Carb and a K&N filter.    I guess if I don't run the spacer I can easily change the studs that hold the carb and then I will have more than enough room but I wonder how that will effect the performance of the carb?   I guess right now that doesn't matter as much as I just need to get this old girl up and running first and then start getting her to "perform"! 71.gif

I put the carb on the manifold, then install them both together.

I tried that first but there was no room.  What I am doing now is I am going to change the studs to shorter ones and install the carb straight to the mani sans the spacer and I should be good.  I just wanted to be in the ball park of the right idea here.   Thanks for the input you guys!

You'd really benefit from using the spacer. 

The HS4 and the ½" spacer should fit just fine with plenty of room to spare when using the correct (standard) studs and either the MiniSpares manifold or the standard cast iron unit.  Which manifold are you using?

Well I ended up taking the spacer out because the bottom of the carb armature juuuuuust hits the firewall.  I know it would be better to have it performance wise but for the moment I am going to go sans spacer so I can get this thing up and running.   Then I will start to modify and fine tune.

Mine hit too, so I found one 3/8" thick instead of 1/2", that combined with the angle of the manifold gave me enough clearance that it didn't hit any more.
