Rear pop-out window latches

On my '62 Cooper S the rear pop-out window latches "overcentered" to hold the window open - the ones on the '89 don't seem to do that, in fact I've seen people using small tennis balls stuck in the latch to hold the windows open.

Are the latches different? Do they not work the same way as before? Or am I missing something?

Someone suggested squeezing the center pivot rivet tighter to tighten the latch but I don't think that will hold when driving down the highway.

Maybe I just need to buy some small tennis balls?

I also seem to remember there being a source in Australia for replacement rubber seals between the surround and glass. T'was a major supplier, can't remember which one though.

Those look exactly like the ones on there now.....for $60 I can buy a lot of tiny tennis balls!   ;D

They get worn and stop staying open is the problem.  One of mine works, the other does not.

The newer style ones do go "over center", just not as much.  As Dan say, they get worn and loosen.  As they loosen, they don't stay "over center" as well and jiggle closed easier while driving.

I never had a problem with the latches, it was always the hinges that were the weak link. 

Fatigue, rust and breakage, I got tired of them after 2½ replacement sets and installed non-opening windows.

I just leave mine closed.  I don't find the provide much of a cooling effect and I much prefer the ease of installation of them over the fixed window style.

Well, I've cleaned out the shop again so I can get the RG in, now I can raise it up on the lift and do a few things. First up - install some power outlets for my Garmin GPS and dashcam, and then take another look at those latches.

It is SO muggy here today - it's nice to be able to get out of the humididity......
