I think I killed my Laptop!

2 year old HP laptop with a solid state hard drive that has worked perfectly since I got it Jan of 2024, boots up almost instantly and has always worked perfectly.

Today I was messing with the boy's blankets, folding them up and such and stood up - my hand brushed the laptop which was on, and a really big static zap jumped from my hand, the laptop shut off instantly and now it's dead, doesn't respond to anything.

I'm hoping there's a fuse in there somewhere that blew, but there's no removable covers on it, I would have to take it apart completely to get inside. There's no removable battery for example. I don't know whether to do that or take it to Geek Squad.

This has happened before where I've gotten a static zap between me and the laptop and it shuts it down, but it's always restarted again.

I'm on my tiny travel computer now, but I like the "big" one much better!

That sucks. I hope it's something simple to fix. Could it be related to something with the battery only? Does it work if plugged into a power supply?

It was plugged in when it got zapped, unplugging or re-plugging has no effect. I think I'll take it down to Micro Center tomorrow or Monday and see what they say......if they say it's a dead motherboard, well there's plenty of pre Xmas sales going on right now. I'd hate to replace it since it's only 2 years old and worked brilliantly. Plus too and also, I'll need to rescue the hard drive and get all my pics out.

I guess there's a reason they used to make computer folks wear those grounding straps on their wrists all the time......but like I said, I've never had one do what this one does when there's a static spark.

Or.....I might buy a motherboard and fix this one and make it my garage computer and retire the 10 year old one that's down there now, then buy the new and improved version for upstairs. We'll see. It will mostly depend on what the Geeks say.....OTOH that one in the garage is the only one we have with a CD player in it, and once in a while I like to listen to some music.....

You might try unplugging it and then holding the power button down for an extended period of time, like 10 to 15 seconds. If that doesn't do anything try holding it down for about 30 seconds or so.
