Plugging away at my '82 1000, I've adjusted the valves, passed a compression test, and set the timing. Idles and revs great.

The next step (I believe) is adjust the HS4 carb. It is currently set according to the rebuild instructions, with the exception of the idle screw.

When I put it in 1st and hit the gas, it bogs down, sounds like my 11 year old blowing into a baritone saxophone, and then it dies. Goes great in reverse.

Is the next thing to tune the carb, or did I skip over something?

Thanks

Is there enough oil in the top of the carb?

Without an air fuel meter to see for sure it sounds like it's lean, so try richening it up a few flats and see if it improves?

Check you have a good seal of the carb gaskets to the intake manifold spacer and the spacer to the intake manifold itself. i had just thrown on old stuff on old gaskets to get it moved two blocks and later on found it was sucking air in, making it all leaned out when the pedal was down and it bogged bad. but idled great. So new gaskets on fresh clean flat surfaces?

also, as mentioned before, dashpot oil could be dry?

Thanks for all the replies.

Dash pot is oiled with SAE 20.

I think you may be on to something regarding the manifold and spacer gaskets. I'm reading online that there are 3 and they should be the same. I have 2 of the tan ones from the kit, and a dark grey one made of a more rigid material.

The order I have them in was:

(Carb)
grey gasket
(Spring bracket)
tan gasket
(spacer)
tan gasket
(manifold)

I don't doubt I have them in the wrong order, or perhaps shouldn't be using the grey one?
