I have the CSK and CRK for the HIF 44, there is no wear in the throttle spindle so I am just using the service kit.
It looks like I have some extra pieces. The Mini Spares kit image online show this picture of the pieces in the kit. I have extra O rings which I see in the last picture are due to different choke or "starter" mechanisms for early carbs.

I do have two large donut seals that I do not see in any diagram. I did not take any like that off of the carb, were different seals used on early versus late HIF 44?

MiniDave

Those look like seals for a master cylinder or something! No idea why those were in your kit as I've never seen them before, but - HIF's were used in pairs on MGB's, and they had various and sundry different modules attached to them for emissions and idle controls that the ones used one Minis didn't have, so maybe it's for something like that?

To me the most important seals are the ones for the choke mechanism, if one (or more) of those fail the thing goes dead rich and the car may not even run.

You may be correct, and the rebuild kit has them as well. This one has the early starter/choke so one o ring, one paper seal and the shaft seal.

I just getting ready to order a rebuild kit for the HIF44 I got off ebay late last year. I am hoping that is why I cannot get my car to run worth a shit with it on. Good to know like most "universal kits" it will probably have a bunch of stuff I don't actually need.

I see they have one with the little spring operated over run deal on the disc and one without. Does it really matter either way which is used? I am just going to buy the entire rebuild kit as I have no idea yet if the shaft has any wear or not. It also looks like the Turbo carb rebuild kit is cheaper than the non turbo version which seems odd. I was thinking about getting the turbo version just in case I want to convert this thing to turbo at some point in the future.

I think the actual turbo carb is different as it is sealed better. I would get one without the "popit" valve runon fixture. I think they can cause issues, but that might be conjecture.

The turbo kit picture looks like it has the seals I am questioning...

In the reading I have done converting a standard one to a turbo carb is not overly difficult it seems so I figured most of the parts are probably the same, I know there are a few differences but for the most part the parts seem to be interchangeable.

I think the one I have has the popit valve thing so maybe that is part of my issue as well. Thanks for the info!

Someone posted this one awhile back, but once you have it rebuilt:

Good stuff, I will definitely be giving these a watch. Thanks!

And I heard back from Burlen/SU

Dear Mr Smith,

Are they a bellows type seal? They are throttle spindle seals which changed during the life of the HIF so we supply both types in the kit.

And a further update:

Dear Mr Smith,

The larger seals which were only used after 1988 will distort slightly if they are wrong. Both types are equally effective so our HIF specialist's advice is if in doubt use the smaller seal!

Looks like I may have an early starter mechanism with a later body...

And these are Cole DIY videos:

And it looks like Cole is working on an early body as the holes for the spindles are smaller and would not acommodate the larger seals

I have watched Cole's before but not in a detailed manner like looking at what version he is working on. I need to pull mine back off the car and see if I can figure out how old it is. I have no idea what year it might have come off of, it took me so long to find one reasonably priced that I wasn't too concerned with all the details at the time. It seemed like it was in pretty good condition so I was hoping I could just slap it on and go, but no such luck I guess. The rebuild kits were out of stock end of last year so I just left it for a later day. Now that it is starting to warm up again I am eager to see if I can get it running decently.

Maybe you could come on our run in May?

It certainly sounds like a good time, just not sure if I could have the car in order by then and as busy as I have been with work lately I am not sure if I could get the time off or not. I am going to see how things go over the next few weeks, if things mellow out some perhaps I can make the run down.
