Title: Project 66' Moke: The Start of something fun!
Post by: jedduh01 on April 22, 2013, 06:29:19 PM
So as i delve more into this great site- with open minds and the want to read and see more. I offer my project that I have been holding back on revealing.  CLM's project moke has been a real inspiratoin and showing of what can be done with a needing vehicle

My Project

1966 Moke - Disassembled about 15 Years ago - Parked under a house Half in the Weather- Front subframe  with engine was kept indoors. The previous owner had a new life to attend to and neglected the Moke- Water- Leaves Rust abounded in the floorboards an the RH Outer Pod.   = Rot.

Able to borrow a trailer- pick up the car - rolling on only the rear subframe and bring home to Charlotte where the  Resto Starts....

Trying to get the hang of the best way to Submit -enter most of the pictures possible-  have had the car about a month and progress is happening and pictures are growing, so i need to post as they come at this point.

My initial goal was going to be to -  Patch floors- Engine in - Make run - Rat Moke.. keep the Patina. But as thing started being looked at, and poked at- the rust pile in the floor would grow.  I would say the RH pod is worse than Ive tackled with rust on my own. Along with the rear deck floor. Simply Rotted away... Those will be my trouble spots.

As of now  just a rat Moke will not work and it will become more of a custom moke with a few cool here's and theres =  the idea now is to go full strip and renew. I will be keeping a majority of the stock parts. Refreshing their look and re use!

Found wheels already!!!- 5 x 10 Weller steelies

Wife even likes beating on this car for dissassembly

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130408_180514_zps7e1864e4.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130408_180514_zps7e1864e4.jpg.html)

Major task wil be Repair the metal needed - full paint and presentation dress to occur.

Oh - The 850 Original engine -  Its VERY tight to try and turn with the crankshaft--- Hopefully I can pop the head off and get it to spin resurrect the lump - or eyes are out for another 998 or such.

Started stripping the car= Torch is my friend to loosen all rusty bolts.

Fuel Tank out -  had 3 inches of BAD Varnish gas within...  see sender  Headache ahead:

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130409_181110_zps1b7f2462.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130409_181110_zps1b7f2462.jpg.html)

First chipped away - sloshed around rocks inside to break free whatever possible. Next Muratic acid inside for 3 days. Next - Electrolsys Bath.

The start

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130417_223915_zps7159b825.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130417_223915_zps7159b825.jpg.html)

4 Days = Getting better

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130419_122758_zps1aea375f.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130419_122758_zps1aea375f.jpg.html)

OH NO pinholes

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130422_124901_zpsd88f5bb6.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130422_124901_zpsd88f5bb6.jpg.html)

Luckily the elctrolsys bath loosened nearly all the sludge- Very clean inside

Por 15 coating to come to the inside to finalize that task.

Final product

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130422_192210_zps5217b7a4.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130422_192210_zps5217b7a4.jpg.html)

For me - I like being able to accomplish something with near nothing no matter what--- Currently out of cash to purchase floor panels, and side pod panels, SO ive been putting my resources to work with many other exterior parts on my own.

Electrolsys = Cleaning parts - de rusting many things while Im at work every day!

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130415_201331_zps97a58f34.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130415_201331_zps97a58f34.jpg.html)

Blasting - Cheap home made blasting Cabnet- Captures the dust and i can pour back and re use.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130414_123945_zpsac891a5a.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130414_123945_zpsac891a5a.jpg.html)

Then this past weekend- Time to remove the rear subframe - but still have the body moveable -

8 Foot Pallet - (http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130421_155802_zps15223156.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130421_155802_zps15223156.jpg.html)

So now the body is stripped. individual pieces are being done as time allows

The next big step will be Blasting / Stripping....

Already got a nice penumatic hole punch for spot weld ready.... Cant wait to use!

The sad part- Wife and I are taking vacation May- June--- all of our free $ needs to be saved for that trip . so no big investments towards the car right now--- Agonizing wait!

It looks to be in MUCH better shape then mine was, good luck on it and watching eagerly :)

Make sure you brace it before cutting too much out, there is not much there for strength when it is intact let alone rusty!

Places to know...

http://www.m-parts.co.uk/ (http://www.m-parts.co.uk/) Probably the best place I know to get panels
http://mokepanels.com/ (http://mokepanels.com/) Another panel place although Leo tends to be a bit more expensive, he is the only game in town for the correct pannier box floors.
http://www.mokeclub.org/ (http://www.mokeclub.org/) the international moke club, they also have a selection of spares available if you join and they have a lot of decent people there willing to help.
http://www.mokesinc.org/ (http://www.mokesinc.org/) an Australian message board a fair bot more lively then Mokeclub. Although they tend to focus on the Aussie made mokes more, construction wise and knowledge wise all mokes are very similar

HIGHLY Recommended thing to get:
Mini Moke: A comprehensive guide to restoration. By Roy Scott.
This book includes detailed schematics for making just about every panel on the moke.

However you need to email him to get one, I will PM his email address to you (even though it is readily available over the internet)

Thanks Chris...!!

Good to know on the panels, I have yes- seen them advertised on the web and talked about. not quite ready to jump into panels...

Anyone interested in a Moke panel group buy? Save on shipping!

Will also look for that book  - knocking up panels on your own shouldnt be too difficult wiht a metal break -( have access to) knowing how they fit together properly will be more important.

Well, to add to my progress--- The body=  Not so much - Saving on when to buy panels. and the needed stuff for that.  Also figuring out how I can transport the body to a media blaster for sandblasting.  I need to find a friend with a utilitty trailer or a CL trailer to help get the body to the media blaster.

Restorer's question to the group.  In the long term  I plan on having this body sand blasted and re sprayed.  DO most people Blast ,  prime - then weld..?  OR Weld. Blast - Re weld new holes that are found and then prime n paint. I cant really decide which way to go. Im leaning towards blast  - prime - weld - finish paint....

Along the lines of progress. Ive been cleaning all sorts of nicks and nacks- re painting Black etc... Rear subframe disassembled and electrolsys on all parts. Wire harness re wrapped with cloth wrapping

Rear Backing plates came out perfectly clean , Rear arms took a few more days - and now  -- Electrolsys bath for the rear subframe... Bubbling right along  Many parts are spotless now - Re assembly of the rear subframe will then move on to the front subframe.

Finally after done cleaning all possible- Time to do the body! .

Since I have very little time to work on my project, I tend to blast a couple areas that I'm going to be working on soon...cut, weld...then for the majority of under car stuff I've done so far prime with POR-15.  I don't think you'd want to cut/weld first since, like you said, after blasting you'd have to go back, cut out more metal, then patch/weld again.  I would think that would lead to more heat and possible distortion on the area.  (note:  I'm a true noob to this stuff, though so take that into acct when reading my babble)

I'll be interested in hearing how you like that pneumatic hole punch.  The one I bought has a two-sided end - hole punch and flange.  Pretty much going to throw it in the trash..lol.  The flange makes for a real nice place to set your new metal in - but what a disaster is makes on the other side!  Probably won't use that again.  And the holes it makes with the punch are huge - been meaning to take a pic to show the difference between that and the drill bit I got with the little spot weld kit from Eastwood.  With the huge hole the punch makes it's really hard to fill it all in and have it look anywhere near decent...

Just something to think about before you make 1k holes (if yours is the same as mine, of course).  I'll grab a pic later.

So - another week or two and things are progressing- just not on the body yet... Vacation next week- out of the country for 2 weeks, Body work wont start until JUNE!!!

anyhow - Rear Subframe all cleaned up and jazzy - Came out of Electrolsys very well - 15 min with the wire wheel on the angle grinder all over and it was nearly bare metal all over.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130502_122702_zps378b45fb.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130502_122702_zps378b45fb.jpg.html)

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130502_184320_zps87b3f348.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130502_184320_zps87b3f348.jpg.html)

My Subframe treatment consists of - Hammerite - then Paint...
I like hammerite for the durablilty - but "black" hammerite is actually very grey - SO i follow up a hammerite coat with a few coats of spraycan black..( i know spraycan, buty hey its easy and worked great on both subs on my 63 for years so far.

The final outcome.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130508_220947_zps8a63869e.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130508_220947_zps8a63869e.jpg.html)

Also have the rear arms completely refreshed and built up ready for subframe.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130508_220939_zpsaecbd221.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130508_220939_zpsaecbd221.jpg.html)

along with trumpets and new shock set!

Next last weekend - I ran across another engine! -- so the little 850 that came with the car had been sitting- and is VERY tight,. can barely make it move with a prybar thru the starter hole- like only 2-3 teeth and it stops turning...  By finding this 998, i figured, why spend money on another 850 to strip . fix and repair when i can do the same on a 998 and  have a few more ponies.

Well - the engine was VERY tired. Head clearly not original ( unpainted) and seller said it Smoked while running- (black plugs) etc.

THe motor however came with transmission attached- with Yolk Outputs - and a "puddin Stir'er / Magic wand shifter - Just right for the Moke.

SO  Dissassembly!!!

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130508_220930_zps6b398627.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130508_220930_zps6b398627.jpg.html)
(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130508_220905_zps3d00ec96.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130508_220905_zps3d00ec96.jpg.html)

Intersting things found upon dissassembly -

Gearbox has a 3:44 Gear installed!  Good for me! but has a pretty heavy sludge coat on the bottom--- washing that out currently. ( soaking with Chemicals)

And for the motor... Bone Stock- Never been into .

Timing Chain Tensioner was broken in the case ,  The head has NO Valve stem seals installed (im hoping this is where some oil burning is from)
And for thirds. the Oil Ring on 2 pistons was slam Jambed up on the piston. STuck in the groove.

SO - IM hoping  - the bores can take a slight hone - and the pistons can take some new rings. and slap her back together. While it would be nice to go full out on the 998---- not right yet- I got a whole more car to go Full out on! Will go to the machine shop for them to measure the bores and the pistons and advise... I wish i could find some affordable oversize 998 Pistons - They seem to be pretty rare!

SO thats where i sit-  Still  prepping and cleaning LOTS of small parts  Brackets-  etc.

Planning on getting cracking on the body when home from vacation!.

  - Oh yea-   Sourced a small trailer 7 x 5.5 that will do just fine for getting the body for the blasters and back for prepwork!

My Personal Goal - Drive it for my birthday - July 20TH! 2013!!

You may want to get a heritage cert and see if the 850 is original. And as for the moving the body, I have found the cheap 4x8 trailers you can get at bimart and harbor freight. I have carried complete minis on mine.

I like how you're getting things done creatively on a budget.  What did you do to fix the pin holes on the tank?  Have you considered sand blasting the shell yourself to save some bucks?  You're compressor may hinder that task.  Also, the pneumatic hole punch...tell me more.  I need one of those instead of drilling manually.  I decided unless I can afford a very expensive spot welder that the way I've been doing it is the strongest method.

Thanks for the comments.

- The Old 850 - I know is original to the car... Owner I got the car from - picked the car up in 71 - 72  and said he ran that 850 to the ground. His story was "removed engine subframe assy  to replace some seals" but I dont see anywhere on the subframe assembly any signs of oil major oil leaks that i would have worried about. Cant really tell why they owner did this dissassembly of the front sub and stopped...  I would kinda be worried of hidden insides.

Either way - Hertiage Certificate probably will come later. Original motor in its stock form will stay with the car. If a next owner wants to go back with it go right ahead.

My plans are not to keep this car English Green and stock wheels either... so i'm not pushing to keep the STOCK original look.  I'm leaning now towards a Dark Blue- (midnight blue)- With Black bumpers and trims.  (silver weller wheels for some pop). Simple but different.

The Penumatic Punch  - I have not yet actually WELDED any spots with this hole punch used - but by the way its designed . Effortless holes  right on the edge of panels with the push of a lever.

The holes are 3/16th so not too big and i think will do a fine job.

I found this one as "used, and untested" on ebay - and took the risk. Shipping almost cost more for the tool than the tool did. 26$ total i think i have in it.
Plugged it up to air- Punch away!

Honestly the next day i was in Harbor freight- and they have the same one on the shelf for 39$ then use a 20% off coupon and give it a whirl.

..

What are thoughts on windshield frame treatment.  I have some rust at the bottom corners  where the corner meets the glass. but i DO NOT want to take this windshield apart ... I assume its supposed to be body color- do you think a painter can mask off the glass and turn out a n ok Job ?

To fix the Pinholes in the tank - Ill be totally honest. and im just giving it a try not expecting a 100% absolute repair- But  I used   From parts store- Epoxy Gas Tank Repair.  I think made by Permatex.  100% perminant.

Everything i read-- People had good luck with epoxy tank repair after they cleaned the tank well- wire wheel. and had no fuel present., users were happy- I figure. WHat have i got to loose... Wire wheel really well - Smash Epoxy into holes well- Smooth out wide. and let it set up... After 2 days it was ROCK hard... I put water in it - NO leaks... We shall see . It should work. Its Made for fuel !

I wish i had some more of a compressor to go for some larger scale blasting-  but i just dont- and i dont hink my HOA will approve of clouds of Dust and such.... I think ill pony up and let a professional treat the body -  Seats- TOp Frames and bumpers all in one go!

Ill bring it back - PRime - Metal repair- then off to find a bodyshop...

Anyone else need to get in on a Moke panel order?  Looking to order in JUNE! Can share the shipping!

Off to see the blaster!!!

- Plans changed for my saturday - and i figured, why let the project sit while I'm on vacation. Take it to the blaster , let them work it in for 2.5 weeks. I gave him a deadline of - Pickup June 3rd.

Hes also putting it etch primer too.

3 Mustangs in the shop + 1 honda being worked on., and now this -- these guys didnt know what it was...

"is that some sorta Willys Jeep"   :o

Also got carburation Sorted out for my 998 - Sure the HS2 1/14 from the 850 would have worked but why not a 1.5 HS4 - if you have one that is in better condition than the original.

And our local wrecking yard -  Had these 3 fogs hanging on a 4wd vehicle-   Not totally comitted to putting on the Moke, But what if!

Garage is now tidy - things all put away - can wait for my return.

I told the blaster guy my hope of driving by July 20'th and he asked -" Uhh - of 2013?"....

Sounds like most peoples reaction to mine in February when I said I wanted to drive it to MMW in June =)

Nice trailer! ;)

Oh I have a spare lower windshield seal if you want it, and maybe a couple rear pannier dividers.

Well - Vacation tapped me out pretty pretty hard in the wallet-  going to be a little while before i can order some panels (unless Mr master card  agrees) . Working with another guy on the east coast doing a moke - for a group panel buy.

Its Moke season here on the east- and we all want to be driving by summer.!

- Meanwhile - ill take my motor to the machine shop - let them hopefully tell me a hone and a re ring will be Acceptable.

Garage is Full - going to have to start putting some parts in the house (living room or somewhere)- need to find somewhere for the original 850 Motor to Live!!

More to come!

I have a feeling your wifey wouldn't like parts in the living room.  Hahaha  79.gif

I like the electrolsis, I did the same thing once.

That's cool. I have a bunch of stuff I could clean up like that!  Have to figure out how to do that!

I admire all you guys restoring cars in this condition. More rust than good panels and yet you all just bat it off and get stuck into it.

Cheers to you all. Keep up the good work. 4.gif

As time passes, progress is slowly made- Another big step happened today - Panels Delivered!  4.gif

Took about 1 week to confirm the needs - one supplier Mokepanels.com Leo Jack was super responsive and nice, He got my whole order. Two other chaps on the east coast are also doing mokes - of probably equal state- We all have talked to each other and its now an informal race. I know i want mine driving by October for CMU in VA. and i think PBraun has the same idea too!

Progress is being made. Engine is at the machine shop- They checked - 998 will take a hone- and clean - and will re ring it and new bearings- Will be a solid powerplant.  Have many engine parts out for stripping, cleaning and readying for paint- I will do this paint on this motor as facotry - FUlly assembled then sprayed BMC Green.

One tool i have really taken to like are Wire wheels- for the DRill--- Smaller - Hand drill is not near as powerful as the angle grinder but the manuverability is AWESOME - all the cracks and crevices easily scrubbed clean.

Another tool - my hole punch - flanger- Jambed,. locked up  50.gif - guess that ebay deal bit me. Order a new one with Warranty!

FInlized my panel order with Leo= parts were picked up fedex wed - DELIERED on  Friday!! my whole weekend has changed plans...

Meanwhle , waiting for orders, communications. etc- I rolled the body up on its side. and get a complete bottom look. YUCK.

Took some time and took off the outer skin. and floor  (only held on by 3 spotwelds anways ) and exposed the whole floor side.

From there Dug in  Cut apart the floor on 1 side- to then take apart form the Inner wall . Pretty clean

Next was the rear heel board and divider- Cut that away - cleaned up welds.

Now i have a clear path - to fit up the new floorbard, know where to fully cut that off outside of the hump and start fitting new in.

Not to mention new Toe board lower- and new Heel Board Rear.

More to come!

So Saturday Came  - Long Anxious night , thinking about what to tackle first.

Got my hands dirty for a few hours made some progress.

First order  = Make my own Side repair patch for the side wall .

18 gauge is HARD to bend a nice crisp 90" angle - but its very sturdy- I even got the Harbor freight 30" bender for few pieces needed

Tacked that in place - and then a Rear closing panel - Tacked in place just to stay there.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130622_120947_zps8048e542.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130622_120947_zps8048e542.jpg.html)

Next figured--- better have the subframe in place to start to put together a replacemetn heel board.

Boled up 3 Points- so the 4th was the reference for the new heel section.

Tacked in place- Just to see if thinkgs are headed in the right direction.
(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130622_123836_zpsa38dede2.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130622_123836_zpsa38dede2.jpg.html)

The other end- TOE board is a mess, so then it was kinda back and fourth for  Whats next -- Well the Floor needs to be in - then the toe goes on top of the floor. so fitted up to see.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130622_133801_zps261799ea.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130622_133801_zps261799ea.jpg.html)

Next the outer closer.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130622_133758_zpsbac89891.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130622_133758_zpsbac89891.jpg.html)

Needs some more shifting around -  Close the back gap up

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130622_143637_zps166c69a1.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130622_143637_zps166c69a1.jpg.html)

and im worried about hitting the FRONT subframe needs  so i think next will be flipping the body  and seeing that the floor holes will line up with the toe holes.

Few hours in - i was BEAT - not just the metal . SO i put  quick coat of hamerite on the inner triangle section seal up, keep some rust at bay hopefully

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130622_135819_zps3189e5c8.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130622_135819_zps3189e5c8.jpg.html)

Of course i wasnt totally done I  mock piled it all up and in to see a View of the future.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130622_142908_zpsd82a9995.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130622_142908_zpsd82a9995.jpg.html)

  - Sunday - Time with the wife-  Epic road trip to the mountains. (moss motoring Challenge Photos) .. Got pretty lost -amazing twisty asphault road got smaller and smaller and turned into  Dirt Mountain road that kept getting worse and worse.... Few rock piles had to be buiilt to cross  a washout spot twice. and oh yea-- this was in my Late model mini!

Nice progress!   4.gif

I agree on the 18ga - I was replacing some Rabbit floors and the support frame underneath was 18ga - built a bender for my workbench with angle iron and some rollcage tubing:

The angle iron actually bent after repeated use of bending the 18ga...never did get the crisp bend I wanted.

Progress continues!

Goods arrived from UK - another amazing delivery - shipped Thrusday - had all weekend to travel. DHL Delivered Monday --- Amercian parcel cariers need to get on the program!

Anyhow - lots of small parts inside-  Gasket Kits for engine.  Rubber parts for body - Hoses., Seals Gaskets. Needed things. and RUBBER for the road!

Slipped these together- then realized DOH - No valve stems!! will grab a few from a local shop ASAP !

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130624_202012_zpse1ce8130.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130624_202012_zpse1ce8130.jpg.html)

- on to the Panel replacement .   Rear side done - Moved to the front - thought i could wing it and place together the toe section .... WRONG!!

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130624_090947_zps80c05d56.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130624_090947_zps80c05d56.jpg.html)

Flipped body -Got the subframe  set in the body and had the actual frame to line up with-  GOOD IDEA

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130624_200119_zpsee168a75.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130624_200119_zpsee168a75.jpg.html)

Little more shifting- here and there- Placed it well...

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130624_200124_zpscadebe5c.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130624_200124_zpscadebe5c.jpg.html)

I know im going to become REAL familair with a grinder, but its solid in every way - Plug welds are now easy!  Welder is in tune- (had to go get anotehr bottle of gas today! Keep on pluggin)

Flip to the other side-  Small patch where the tunnel and shifter meet- FInalize the floor around all edges!

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130625_180308_zps80b61d24.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130625_180308_zps80b61d24.jpg.html)

While im beating on metal - my Buddy came over for advise on how to tackle a Mk 1 Headliner!

I did one for my 63 about 10 years ago with my mother- so i got the gist! we got it nice- but the glue wouldnt set./.. he took it home to let the contact cement settle so it can install nicely!

Continued on the RH Outer

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130625_193723_zps474a9966.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130625_193723_zps474a9966.jpg.html)

AND SHES PRETTY DONE!
(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130625_202523_zpscc53f218.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130625_202523_zpscc53f218.jpg.html)

im actually going to take a page from CLM's book- and BOLT on the outer side panner panels... COuple pan head screws  and it could be welded on in the end if someone wants... that way- the inside box is serviceable too!

ON TO THE LH Side!

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130625_205954_zps606f21bb.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130625_205954_zps606f21bb.jpg.html)

Alot of the same from the RH side.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130625_210002_zpsa4c6ccbf.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130625_210002_zpsa4c6ccbf.jpg.html)

COming along!! im quite thrilled- and  thinking now about - Grav Tex the underside and box inners and inner floor- along with primer and prepare for finding a painter!

Alot to think about.

Soldiering along--- Drivers side Continues. More of the metal patches needed  for the inner walls  - floor is taken out and rear heel board needs a patch along with the toe board section.

Sorry all the pictures are left right and upside down- Couldn't control that on the upload.

The LH side disassembly went very well - Kept most of the outer box together while i drilled out the floor spot welds from inside of the box .. Saved that whole outer box, Great condition. Only needed floorboard replaced. and outer panel from spotty rot!

Spent some time with grinder on the RH side where complete- Hit the high spots with the rough wheel, and then smoothed rather nicely on the low spots- Touch of primer to keep covered- Few more spots to just go over for final touches-  Alot more to do on the inner body-but that grinder is NOISY - Earplugs for sure!

I also picked up a Harbor Freight - 9$ 4.5 Grinder - WheW  I LOVE That tool - Lighter weight - Easy to handle, Just fine on power-   HIGHLY recommended.

I was held back this weekend by my wifes car -- Torrential rains + Blocked sunroof drains = Flooded interior.
Luckily no electrical failures (yet) but had to strip out the entire interior to dry out the under foam that is like a SPONGE!
Hopefully have her car back together early this week for more Moke progress for the long weekend!

Did you get the one with the flap trigger or the on off switch?

If you didn't get it, I would suggest getting the one with the flap trigger, it shuts off when it leaps out of your hand unexpectedly! I find it nicer and safer then the ones that stay on when it leaves your hand.

I would say I lucked out and picked the one with the Flap Switch - I know what you mean - Griders JUMP out of your hands and need easy shutoff sometime .

My wife asked "what can i do to help"   She doesn't like welding sparks, UV light for her eyes, and searing molten metal on the skin  .... So I said " just wait you have a hot date coming with a grinder!!    I think two grinders running together will get the whole thing smoothed out QUICKLY.

More progress photos to come.

Engine block is under paint along with some accessories.  Engine assembly  parts are on the way - Bearings and Rings and seals.  Will probabaly wait until moke body is at a painter to actually put together engine and trans assy,

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130703_204720_zpsb82ebfa3.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130703_204720_zpsb82ebfa3.jpg.html)

Front side outer closer panel - MUCH Easier second time around for fitting and matching the other side.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130703_181132_zpsc582ee6b.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130703_181132_zpsc582ee6b.jpg.html)

and finally-  since the floor is in place- the rear 4 inches of the tunnel hump were realy bad ..

made bent my own patch for that - Not the cleanest- but It'll do.

Long weekend- Whats the best thing to do - - Work on a Moke!

Metal progress continues. Front toe board Complete- final.  Rear Heel complete- Final. OH - i guess that means the floors are DONE!!  WEll mostly  Spent some time with the grinder.. tidyed up many spots- but also found a few spots that need a few touchups- Couple gaps., Couple holes.. No worries.  Did blow thru the rear tunnel hump in a spot - *thinner than thought- So that will require a patch .

After grinder time - and some primer on top.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130706_161840_zps585c43a8.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130706_161840_zps585c43a8.jpg.html)

Now on to the rear load floor- !    Whew . its a PAIN -- Double welded on the Flat lip, and the Bend up lip, So double the welds.

ALso a few brackets on the underside that i cut around to leave in place to mock up next...

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130707_170429_zps76980ede.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130707_170429_zps76980ede.jpg.html)

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130707_170419_zpsd0334279.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130707_170419_zpsd0334279.jpg.html)

I got about half of the leftover "flange to get out - drilling spot welds .. the rear is toughest because cause the rear panel is thinner than rest and bends the most . Trying to not blow thru with the spot weld driller or the starter driller too, Thin in some places will take and require some small patches.

ALso ran to Lowes-- more primer paint for backup . Picked up a can of "truck Bed Liner"  I know the fo pa's about using it, but i think it will be the best thing to spray the Inner panneir boxes and the floorboards to give the whole floor durability .. Im testing it now if it can be sprayed body color on top and left with texture underneath.

Does anyone have experience with Gravitex?

http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/u-pol-gravitex-hs-stone-chip-protector-p-15137.aspx (http://www.autobodytoolmart.com/u-pol-gravitex-hs-stone-chip-protector-p-15137.aspx)

Would be another optoin - Apply with their gun. any pointers Anyone?  The fact that is paintable is my primary reason for considering.

ALso while shopping- found that new Full Face shields are very Cheap!.. I've been cutting and welding for 3 years now with a 10 year old mask !  it was like looking thru a muddy window... New face shield - Priceless.. now my sweat drips in the way of my sight only.

Working more on the rear load floor.  Small spots rotted thru .. need attention  . SOme of the flange rusted gone --- Weld in replacement flange. Rear panel  . Holy - Weld in 2 patches there- Front C Channel - Needed two patches.

ALso dis connecting the front corner brackets was a pain too - Welds. Side welds Everything!

The floor also has some random holes (where they shoudnt ) probably for a Later or foreign moke.. had to weld those up ( two big squares in the center.

Set it firmly in place - things lined up . Tacked down.

Looks good from both sides

Finalize the top

Little bit more to do on the bottom.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130709_215943_zps8ffd995f.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130709_215943_zps8ffd995f.jpg.html)

Final steps will be to get out two rear seats.. Have to reinforce the floor areas where the seats bolt to - and a center support., weld nut in some spots where the seats attach.

Awesome progress Jedduh!!  Looks great.   4.gif

I've been using POR-15 as a primer on the underside after metal work.  Tough stuff and can be top coated.

Rear floor is taking alot of Nit pickey items to fit in..  The flange had to be pulled down- Lower support had to be added in...

I also used some sheet metal screws to pull it down and hold in place while making sure it all fit right.

Welded in solid from the bottom side.

Really just need to clean up some welds.

No Pic. but the floor was stamped with the rear seat mounting holes backwards!  also have to fab up a floor support bracket for seat mounting too.

Box of Vroom Vroom parts came in!  Rings, Bearings, Seals, Mounts, gasket sets.! Its piling up!

Actually I believe those are seat belt mounting holes for later model mokes, the late model floor does not have early seat mount holes in it :)

Did not feel like - grinding - cutting, making a big mess and more noise on the body... Had a willing helper assemble another project.

Will it run?

Yes- I love my WIfe and she  actually got INTO building the block- asking quesitons looking up torques. We had a small snag while assembling- When we put on the 2 + 3 rod caps- and then torqued up, the crank would no longer turn!   Oh man - Finally figured out--- WHen i took out the rods and the caps... I must have flipped them 180 out... the locking tabs of the caps were off from each other and not tab to tab, also throwing off the alignment of the cap- Locking up the crank... Now assembled right- timed with cam in place. WP - Oil Pump installed- Ready for a head... Gotta blast some more engine parts for final paint and re assembly

Back to the body -- Little parts sure take a lot of fettling and fitting.  Necessary items however.
Underside support - rusted  and now re built

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130717_124938_zpsc9b638f9.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130717_124938_zpsc9b638f9.jpg.html)

Happy to say The rear end is COMPLETE_ and grinder time made it rather smooth and presentable.

Few small items to continue to tidy up - RH Pannier box- two center supports- I failed to order.. I'M simply grafting onto and attaching as factory Had... just with a seam now present

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130717_193305_zps15ad9c50.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130717_193305_zps15ad9c50.jpg.html)

Hull Vents--- yea- wonder why water gets in the Triangle of the body - Cause there are vents... Re built 2 on one side so the hull can vent moisture (much like outer sills on a mini)

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130717_125000_zps1055d9e1.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130717_125000_zps1055d9e1.jpg.html)

Just ran out of Mig Wire for the welder- and the Mig Tank is about to 0    Can solidly say i put 2 Lbs of wire spool weld back into this car.

Final bits- Re build the battery box completely -  Battery Supports. Mounting bracket.

And probably a few welds to touch up just to make fewer holes.

A view of a solid body close to time!

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130717_193559_zps64058209.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130717_193559_zps64058209.jpg.html)

have a list ready of needed supplies from the paint supply shop--- I'm planning on doing alot of Prep.  Filling, Texture underocoating and preping for top coat.

Upgraded my compressor by adding a filter for water ( been super humid here ) and draining the compressor tank removes most fluid- Now the out line has a trap!

I can honestly say that quality paint work is 80% prep (metal work and sanding) 15% quality materials and 5% using the right material for the job. Epoxy vs etch vs high build primer ect.  8.gif

You have a great start, so keep with it and when you start sanding for paint get the body perfect, then prime it one more time with a good guide coat.

Over 300 hours just in metal work and paint for this car. So be patient and you will have great results.

Another week or so has moved on by -  I feel like progress has come to a crawl....

Father in law was in town last week to so between entertaining him, and hering him tell me how what should be done- Not much got finished.

Anyhow--- together- we managed to Sand down the bottom - Clean up - Remove most of the rough stuff.  Slick up the metal;.. and Lay down a coat of Primer.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130725_174149_zps01337d94.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130725_174149_zps01337d94.jpg.html)

Let that dry for a day - on to the next layer... Undercoating!!

Masked off wheel well - im only undercoating the actual floors - not fenders .

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130725_204354_zpsb55c94b3.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130725_204354_zpsb55c94b3.jpg.html)

later that evening when temps came below 90 -- shot undercoating in the driveway!!

Shutz gun - Easy to do!

Then friday we flew to San fran for the weekend- Family wedding- - so it has been waitin gnow for this week for some more attention ...

I think 1 more under body sand on the needed spots-- clean + final under body primer coat...

then time to flip and turn the magic to the top side...

Thanks for the support--

I learned real fast after this frist primer and undercoat-- Wear GLOVES!!! that stuff is very hard to come off without chemicals..

Yes i should probably wear lung protection too.

I forgot to add- I do need to go back an seam seal a few edges--- then the bottom will get that final coat of primer...

Fitted original doors to new Outer Panel  Original Dzus Fasteners still work great- and the spring holders provided with the panels were  a snap pop rivet to fit too - Worked perfectly.

Welded the outer panel on!  RH Side . Only need to smooth those welds out!

Welding the sides on was a pretty straight forward affair -  They didnt  line up perfectly with the angles on the end - but not the end of the world.

Grinding the plug welds down was pretty easy too , but Be careful CLM-- when you start getting into smoothing your Moke.. Too much grinding  will leave Patches where each weld was, and you will easily see the grinding marks.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130801_182654_zps4dd26f22.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130801_182654_zps4dd26f22.jpg.html)

I suggest using the Highest grit flap disk 120 ish- to smooth your grinds flush - then hopefully each spot will only require a thick layer of primer sanded smooth for a slick finish. I def dont want to fill each and every weld spot for a smooth appearance.
Have to also watch the edges of your grinder dont jump into the pressed edge of the panel and mess up your nice panel body line!

Little more filler needed in the front!

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130802_072836_zps9f4cce0f.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130802_072836_zps9f4cce0f.jpg.html)

Yep - im using that palm sander - My compressor doesnt have enough volume and keepup to run DA Orbital .. IT works for majority of flattening!

Welp-  its all one color now .

Sanded - cleaned Tidy'ed the whole body top side-- Sprayed with primer,

Called 3 body people - Independents- Planning on getting it to one of them this week / weekend for color.

Looking over it - of course its not perfect - but it hopefully will be a solid slick down and treat a few spots with icing and then roll and color... I just dont have the patience for painting cars!

Body is out of my way!!!
Gave it to a painter on Saturday - he agreed to have it done in 2 weeks! (heard that before!! )

I cant wait! I even Offered a bonus for finishing Sooner with GOOD results.  He said "say no more"...(shop had some other nice rides in there) but looked like he needed some business.

This has free'd up some time to start piecing together alot of nicks and knacks--- engine assembly is coming to an end - about to put the block on the transmission. Suspension is coming together- Final pre assemblies before final assembly.

One last order "hopefully" from England for Moke specific trimmings,  Bonnet latches- Dzus fasteners etc.

Expecting to run into some Assembly Issues... generator - Sarters- Master Cyls -- will they all work.. but hey  - staying on track!

Buckingham Blue

WOW!  That is coming along fast!  Good for you!  I am way behind.  Can't get the pannier tops, so I may have to fabricate the center sections, they are so shot.
Have to get the gearbox undone, and the motor built. Not to mention the gas tank or some of the brakes, etc..... Much to do.

BTW - How do you do the electrolysis cleaning?  Looks like great results!   Awesome color choice!

Thought I was going to have a chill weekend with friends -- NO body to work on, so hey lets to other things.

THen friday morning-  body guy calls--"we gotcha ready"!!!!!  :-\

I end up spending the remainder of Friday excited to get down there- First i said ill pick up Saturday - then i said NOPE make it later today!  Picked up a PAINTED MOKE BODY !!! YAYAYYAYAY

Well - the job was done - and was honestly - a pretty good job for how fast it was done. I Think he should have kept it for the weekend to let it dry more- that CLEAR was SOFT>. easy to scratch with the slightest rub! Had to handle very gently.

Overall now looking at it over the weekend - Humm -- Its not the best paint job  - its no where near perfect. and a few things about it bother me. - Its a good 5 Footer paint job -- and I think  Humm-- i probably could have accomplshed atleast equal to this myself!

I took it to a painter and body shop to have a CLean paint job - well - sadly - its got quite a bit of trash in it..   Few areas should have been rubbed down more before Spraying.  Few areas found heavy Runs in the color. ETC... it goes on.

In the end - I kinda got what i paid for -- a rush job with rush'ed results.

His shop was POORLY lit- so this dark color- you couldnt see ANY of these imperfections out of the booth... not till i get it home to go over it to see the bad inclusions... He had missed a few big areas on the bumpers so he kept those for a re spray - and ill pick those up this comming week.. while there im going to discuss the final outcome.

Im OK with the body imperfections - and the general "condition. But - some spots are very un even. - missed clear on one inner panel  and other spots not color'ed either--- So that will be discussed..

Regardless- Im rockin and rollin... Gonna get this baby on the road!

Well, IM well over the Quality of the paint job gripes- Now that we're getting some assembly going on the trimmings really are making this body look like a vehicle... The dark color really attracts ALL dusts so hey - in the end, Im the one with the moke it dosnt matter if its glassy or skabby!

Have made some good progress over the past couple of days .

Rear end finished - Minus the parking brake cables Broke 1 on cleaning it up... Dont ask....

Another forum convinced me to go bottoms up on the engine install .  Got the engine nestled into the cradle - Perfcectly easy!

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130819_2111341_zps847cd871.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130819_2111341_zps847cd871.jpg.html)

Wanted to assemble completely out of car- Axles to hubs, but found one Original CV Boot was torn.. No suprise., so ordered new boots. and found axle circlip missing--- so . parts are on their way.

Moving along- subframe with hubs can hold a car! Lets put her in!

Plenty High!

getting there

it only took a slight rear lift nudge to get the top bolts in!!

then my next worry was the rear subframe to foor bolts... OH MAN!!! Couldnt have been better. ALL HOLES HIT PERFECTLY!

Suprise suprise.. This body hasnt been on solid 4 wheels in 15+ years

Its been another week - TIme for some updates.  I think you could say i'm OBSESSED with getting this car done.

Finally tonight its quarter till 12 and im sitting down for the evening..Wife things im crazy . obsessive about this...

  Anyhow Some GREAT Milestones...

After installing the sub frames - engine. wire and plumbing.. hey were on the road right--- NOPE!! all the "little things" take soo much time!!  Clean more of that- fix this - find that ...

My biggest battle thus far has been wiring.   Helpful tip -  RUn a small jumper fused link. from Negative on your battery to your ground point-   use 10 - 15  20 amp fuses in the fused line to start doing your hookups and testing- If you hit, or touch anything wrong-- fuse pops. No smoke Lost...

This will allow testing of every circuit other than the Starter. Helpful tip shared by other british mini owner!

Rear lights all work (one side turn lamp needs some assistance to Flash)  = Headlights shine- park lamps shine. Fuel Pump Cllacks. Horn will work with the column.  But MAN- been fighting the engine harness..!!

only 5 wires and i keep running into issues- Finally found - Voltage regulator is Shorted-  Main line from the Generator- keeps resistance and is clealy grounded somewhere.. YEP - Un wrapped the harness all the way back to the Regulator box -- YEP  Grounded in the Regulator Box...  Ground termal - grounds high oin resistance of the live terminal.

Ordered a new one ( Still hoping the generator will work) .  If not- Will be putting an alternator on this car!

Starter solenoid clicks properly with the key.
Engine has good oil pressure. Rolled that over a few times. Installed small Oil Pressure Gauge. NICE.

Just need to finalize some Coil and Distrubutor to see if we can make some spark

Clutch Hydrolics have pressure

Just got brake pedal pressure today!!!

Seal Coated the Fuel Tank.!  Saturday  Four days to dry - then allowed to put fuel in it (not yet)---
KBS COatings- I reccomend it for sure! Easy to use , follow directions well - I think turned out PERFECT

A good buddy of miine is a Vinyl and Graphics guy- Good at laying stickers  and graphics-- I showed him a Roll of Pin Stripe I had from somewhere- he put it to PERFECT USE!

Very nice - you're way ahead of me and my moke.  Eventually I'll get there.  The engine/subframe install sounds and looks easy. I may have to try it that way this time. Now working of bits and pieces - brakes, gas tank, steering, etc..... while CTR gets the engine and tranny back in shape.

I wish I had more time to work on stuff - so much other things now being retired!  Time valuable!  Moke must get done!   Now got the electrolysis going, so starting to soak up all sorts of stuff!

11.gif  One thing after the other, then don't step on bad stuff with no shoes on!    50.gif

Keep it up Peter-- I saw your post on MM.. and progress is happening... that metal slugging is slow going no matter what it is the basis for how the car comes toggether, so you want it done right- If it takes more tiem.. SO be it!

I'm VERY fortunate. Calm family time. Work for corporate for the day - plan on working on the Moke at night - Lots of progress that way!

Congrats on the electrolsys-- Its really good N simple pretty easy cleanin... the Black stuff does take a little effort and likes to stick to your hands after cleaning off, but the results are great.

I did do both of my Clutch and Brake masters-- But now after filling both - the brake master leaked fluid out-- humm.. right on the bottom side. WHere at == so i put in some green food coloring and EASY TO SEE.. Uh oh!!  Pin HOLES!!
(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130904_184238_zps1fcf12ad.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130904_184238_zps1fcf12ad.jpg.html)

Cleaned the cyl out again -- I honestly patched them with JB Weld / Fuel tank epoxy... Let it dry for 24 Hours.   Looking for any signs of fluid - watching the level today --- It should hold since it was only the resevorir that dripped.

Keep up the work... We shall Both be moking in NO TIME!

And to add a few more tastes about my progress....

Back finding the Voltage regulator was shorted out - Purchased a New one-- Ebay For the win!!  46$  worth a try.  Recieved that Tuesday!   traced all wires each direction using the proper MOke wire diagram.. Labeled and tripple checked everything.. I FINALLY have it wired correctly  The Red Igniton light never glowed brighter!   No Oil pressure warning lamp Humm.. Check that- Bad switch--- replaced with old spare . Fixed too.

(http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii125/jedduh01/20130828_233439_zps90b5abf2.jpg) (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/jedduh01/media/20130828_233439_zps90b5abf2.jpg.html)

OK so electrics. Lets make her fire.!  Old Distrubutor from the 850 - Old Side exit cap... humm -Hooke it up. flashy with thie points to the coil.. but no bang.  OH YEA  ! Lets tighten and set the valve clearance.

Check and check --- no bang with the 850 early dizzy... SO step over to a second spare dizzy i picked up randomly from another 998 i previously had-  Top exit - neat old green wires + all for Champoin spark plug connectors... same dizzy flash - no bang to the motor.  Finally start looking...  I have the Dizzy 180Deg out...
turn to the right direction - Pop POP. Close  - turn one or two more teeth to bring the rotor to #1 better- BANG.. Advance time.. advance more-  VROOM!!!!!! she runs!  first kick , each start.

OK LETS DO THIS!!!  now pour real fuel in the nicely seald tank! Fuel pump supplies well...  Water in the radator.. Small leak out a Thermostat housing bolt... Re seal that... Cltuch feels good. Call it a night, but i said hey - I could drive this very soon.   Call insurance., get coverage.  This afternoon, to the DMV... Simple normal plates.. DONE AND DONE  LEGAL For the road baby!  Come home.. Have neighbor pump brakes one last round..  spinnly wheel. press pedal. stops... We should have brakes...LETS GO!!!
Vroom.. moves easily the first 5 feet.. Get in Neighbor -- Lets go!   First trip taken out of garage today! No windscreen, no Bonnet.  Kinda rough, Sticky gaspedal.  Sloppy clutch , hydrolcis went flat too quicly..

OK so a few more things to Tidy up...

Wife comes home - We re assemble the windscreen.    fix the clutch.  Fix the gaspedal MUCH BETTER>. wife gets her first moke ride too - She's afraid to drive it so far But she will!  Rides great- takes bumps MUCH better than my lowered normal minis.

Leaking oil pretty good out the axle seals... and i think the tappet chest is leaking a bit too  :( not a fun leak...

Few shots before a nice cleanup this weekend., Dust and dirt and smudges need taken away...

SO its been almost exactly 5 months for this car project and i HONESTLY cant believe its come this far... I like this forum post cause ive written pretty much every step, so I or anyone else (future owners) can have for refrence.  I hope to get the original owner's contact info, send him this too and he can see what a hunk of junk he sold me... But fun!!!

More small things to come here and there--
Decisions to make aon a Roof / Top - Flappy or Golfcart?

Need to get a good exhaust made-- Have a soid downpipe back about 3/4 of the car-  and then a nice RC40 Muffler-- Need a linking pipe made about 26 Inches.

Need to fix+ Install parking brake stuffs... Oh it wont stop!!!

Drove to work this morning- Wow- Amazing All is running great! ! kinda strange in traffic lights to be soooooo exposed like that.

Got to work- couple co workers noticed- said WOW Congrats!

Home for lunch - Clutch feels funny... not holding pressure--- Slave Cyl is dry -- Master cyl has to be leaking air by.

Humm - ordering a Clutch master.

Found i had two Axle Yolk Seals already here--- Why didnt i put them in when the transmission was out 11.gif--- but anyways. Did that Tonight too - SHould have stopped the Oil leaks by 80%

Bummer the clutch is acting up - I'M going to nurse it to Cars and Coffee in the morning- Bring a jug o brake fluid- and some tools just in case..

Otherwise- SHES FUN!!!

oh the ratty exhaust-- Needs Repair- Hopefully right after clutch works- i can take to a muffler shop and they can help it out!

Probably need to drive that like a motorcycle - always assume people aren't seeing you and the ones that do see you want to kill you.

But at least on a bike I wear head-to-toe gear - you'd look like The Stig doing that in the Moke!

Congrats man.  AWESOME.

Well  -  Have been Moking for about 2 weeks now .. BOY OH BOY WHat good fun...

Questoin at nearly every stoplight - " Is that legal??"

Two Saturdays ago - Cars and Coffee meet- all cars welcome of  all types- Typically everyone flocks to the Lambo's and exotics, but this Moke really drew a crowd-- too many people too many questions I had to walk away....Most people were stunned. Mini friend has now given me a MOKE brochure - I can put in the window and describe easily what the car is . Kids I let sit in it loved it and wanted to take it home... Simple fun.

Exhaust about fell off- Crappy mid pipe installed but we Made it home - Clutch was frumpy- but operable.

New clutch cyl installed - having a new mid pipe made to match the RC40 rear muffler better = quieter.
Was getting hard to start some times -- randomly.... Puilled plugs-- water in number3 cyl . foulding plug unitl it blows it out -- HUMM _- re torque head-- Problem hasnt come back-- Hopefully head gasket needed a bit more squish - and took care of that.

Now my path is a Roof - or say Hood... took the golf cart roof route-  fabbed up a few brackets and went for a test drive- YUCK - MUCH louder- Reflects sounds - and feel like its going to lift off- Shakes the windshield TOOOO MUCH -  Talking this week to an upholstery top pro for if he can make a top or not... shall see

Only one Stop  dead while on the road - Coil wire broke - single  Butt connector from a nearby shop - got me running again. Now keeping a simple tool kit in the Pontoon!

Afraid to go on the interstate at this point - TOO BLUSTERY without a roof... but we managed to spend the entire weekend running around town. Great times none the less!.

Yeah, really nice!  I will be there someday soon. Just got a new tub to soak the gas tank in. Trying to get a lot done while the shell is getting done, but having some road blocks thrown at me, ah, well, life goes on.

Congratulations on getting your Moke going. !   Are you going to the CMU event?

He better!!! I have been badgering him to drive the moke up instead of towing it.  Not sure where he's at on that choice yet.  Maybe you guys can help me convince him.   4.gif

I've spent a lot more time over the years on adventure motorcycling forums than car ones, and man...would we dump on anyone towing a bike to an event (although I can't really remember anyone being lame enough to do it).  Had some pretty stupid adventures loaded down with camping gear in places we shouldn't be...and I'm nowhere near as thorough with my mechanical work as Jedduh seems to be.  Those are the great times I look back on...

DRIVE THAT THING!  Drive the wheels off it...and don't forget your camera.

As Charles Muntz said - 'Adventure, is out there!' [but not on a trailer]

Well Guys - Moke's still trucking- and yes- the talk about TOWING VS Driving to CMU NEXT WEEK October 9th has been settled - I will be driving Moke up  there. Weeks ago i decided if i had a roof driving should be much more comfortable ... therefore i  Committed to that part - Went ahead and ordered a new roof rom M Parts in UK... SLOW to process order- slightly lacking communication- i thought it would never come, but the roof arrived!!!!   VERY NICE  perfect quality- Fit and finish couldn't be better.  I also got the strap kit too - Roof kit came with all parts needed to install - Highly recommended in the end.  Expensive, but very doubtful any uphulstry person could create such a perfet piece like that.

Now to start to try and think of how to put this together - No instructions came with the roof- so I reached out to a fellow moke owner with a PERFECT  Old English White moke -- and he send me some valuable pictures and a  solid easy step by step to get it done.

  From a Fellow Moke'r

I've attached a few pics of my hood installed.
From my unreliable memory:
1.) It would have been a lot easier with some help.
2.) I believe the straps get laid out loosely first.
3.) The rear of the top is screwed to the car. (except for the outer two screws.
4.) The top and straps are snapped to the front of the windscreen with the hoops in their final position.
5.) I spent some time determining the final length of the straps marked, cut and dressed the ends (carefully) with a small torch. Attached them to the outer two holes... I believe there was some longer screws for this....
I did this step slightly different  see below.
6.) Now, the scary part.... drilling the hood and hoops for the self tapping screws.... a good center punch really helped out. I used one of those spring loaded types as it's difficult to hold things in place and swing a hammer. I got fortunate and didn't manage to drill a hole in the hood that was almost lined up with an existing hoop hole. At that point, I think your only options would be to enlarge the hole in the hood or bias it towards the existing and hope for the best.

I will also add -
I had the car in the sun with the roof sitting for a good warm afternoon- stretch and get the top more flexible.

First I adjusted the Rear bar to pull back on the top nice and tight to the corners.  ( shorter adjustable straps go there)

Then concentrated on the middle bar set.  Main thing- Attaching those two bars to the straps.   I positioned, then marked with a sharpie .  then took the top off. Then screwed the straps to the bars.

Over top of that went the roof top=  Perfectly in place and taut. and tight.  Put roof back on. then Rear attaching completed- After that it was done and done.

White moke owner put screws Thru his top --- that may be correct- but i am going to avoid that step. there are holes in my bars where those top screws would fit, but i dont like the thought of it.  Driving currently the top is just FINE!

Few pictures of white moke , and on a good day ill get some more of my top install.

SO NOW - MOke's being driven 3 hrs ( Weak trip i know_ to Virigina )  for a great meet next week, Adjusting valves- checking this preparing that should be a good ride.

One suspension squeek i just cant find - or solve... Down now to the front suspension--- lower control arm bushings. or the knuckle joints it has to be -- the only 2 parts i never took apart!!! Its annoying but not unbearable- Might try and lube it up without a full dissaseembly.

Moke is fun=== too many people dont think its a car " why do ytou have a plate on that golf cart "  or " is that legal "

More to come!
