Title: Unexpected "gifts"
Post by: MPlayle on December 23, 2023, 02:58:32 PM
On a separate "holiday" wish: may your "unexpected gifts" be more enjoyable than what I managed to give myself - a fractured ankle.  What a pain in the ...

As my mom used to tease - getting old sucks!

Wow! how did you do that? Not riding your MINI bike I hope!

No, not riding the bike.

Something really unexpected last Saturday evening (Dec 16): I had been standing still in the living room adjusting the stereo and tv.  I went to walk across the living room and when I took a step, my left knee went limp.  I fell and badly twisted my left ankle and felt three pops in it as I went to the floor.  It is now a technicolor bruise and I have a slight fracture in the end of the fibula.

I went to an urgent care clinic the next day and that is what they found.  The put me in a walking boot and gave me a referral to a specialist as well as told me to follow up with my PCP.  Unfortunately, the specialist they referred is out-of-network for my insurance, so I am now waiting on a new referral from my PCP (which I saw on Tuesday) to an in-network orthopaedic specialist.

Body parts suddenly not working is not pleasant. Sounds like you are still somewhat mobile so that helps. Hope it will be an easy fix on your ankle and knee.

I brought a nice cold home last week that I've lovingly given to my family.

My knee is fine.  I am basically used to sensory hiccups as I have had them for many years (cause heavily tested for, but still unknown).  This one happened at a most inconvenient moment causing the ankle to go.

Don and his wife have been trading covid back and forth, so I've been staying away. I did go to the PRI show in Indy a couple weeks ago and walked around with 30,000 or so bubbas for two days.....but so far so good. I have two out of town trips coming up over the next two weeks so I need to stay healthy - one is to North Carolina for my grandson's wedding.....def don't want to miss that.

Michael, do they have you in a boot or a cast? can you drive or are you grounded?

I am in a boot for now.  I am still trying to get an appointment with an orthopaedic specialist for further examination and treatment.

I do manage to get around (not any real choice as I have nobody to fall back on for support).  Driving a manual with a boot on the clutch foot is a bit challenging.

Update: I finally got in to see a orthopedic specialist today.  It seems to be healing fine so far.  I have been cleared to keep up my current routine (hard splint/boot during the day, softer brace at night when I sleep).  I have my next follow up in 2 weeks to evaluate progress and set timetable for weaning out of the boot into just softer braces and begin some therapy to rebuild range of motion.

Since I have also figured out a routine for getting in/out of my Jeep and managing the clutch, I can also put off having to think about switching my "daily driver" to something with an automatic transmission.

Do you even have an automatic in your fleet?

Good to know you're on the mend....things don't heal as quickly when you're *ahem* older.   :13:

No automatics in the "fleet" (currently my 2016 Jeep Wrangler tow/daily and 1983 classic Mini Van).

I figure it will probably be another month or two before I am without any sort of brace and back to walking mostly normal.

Update on the ankle:

I had a follow up ortho appointment last week.  I was told it is healing nicely and was given a scedule for weaning out of the boot.  Yesterday started the second stage of getting out of the boot - 1 week per stage for three stages.  I will be free of the boot after the end of the third stage.

I am waiting on the indicated referral for some PT to work on recovering range of motion.

I am officially out of the boot full time!  (Still no word about physical therapy - that may become a moot point after my next follow up appointment next week.)

I also now have an automatic in the "fleet".  The Jeep is off to other adventures.  I now have a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness as my daily driver.  Compared to even the Jeep, it feels like a baby shuttlecraft from Star Trek.

Congrats on the new ride! Does it have a trailer hitch?

Yes, I had the factory trailer hitch and wiring added by the dealer.  It is rated for 3500 tow capacity - equal to my former Jeep.

That will do it.....you tow on a dolly, right? That will haul it easily.   :steeringwheel:

My Clubby hauls mine no issue.

Wait - that has a CVT transmichigan, doesn't it? And it's still tow rated? I'm surprised.....

Yep, CVT transmission with "8 speed" paddle shifters (no, I don't know how to use them).  The "gearing" of the Wilderness edition is supposedly a bit different from the normal Crosstrek for better "off road" use and towing.

The other trim categories of the Crosstrek are only rated 1500 pounds towing.  The Wilderness is factory rated 3500 pounds.

They do the same thing for the Forester and the Outback models.

Looks nice.  Mean and purposeful.  I like the gold accents and body cladding too.

I predict a Dave comment on black wheels in 3... 2... 1...

Those are the only wheels available for the Wilderness version of the Crosstrek.  The Wilderness edition of all models (Crosstrek, Forester, Outback) have black wheels only.  Each model has its own spoke style, but all are solid black.

Of course, I never understand black cars in hot places like Texas or Vegas or Pheonix either, let alone black wheels - those must get really hot!
