Title: Interesting videos
Post by: Willie_B on April 19, 2019, 05:16:24 PM
Was passing time on youtube and saw this neat video. The amount of thinking outside the box is impressive.

If you find a neat video vehicle related post it up for me to pass some time with.

A new series of videos made by steveston motor company. Whether you think a vtec swap is cool or criminal, these guys do make good videos. (I posted the second in the series because the first is a short intro to the project without any actual work)

Asembling a Rolls Royce Trent engine.
First engine I worked on was P&W JT4 Turbojet on B720. What a difference 60 years makes.

I think restomods are cool.  Taking a classic style and improving everything about it that was lacking, power, brakes and handling.

That's where Tiffany Holt got her new classic/vtec (in fact I think she bought the blue one with the flag on top in the video). I sat next to Tyler Gildred at the MMEMW in Snowmass last summer - he's a great guy but their cars are really spendy.

I think the Karmann Ghia coupe is one of the prettiest car designs ever.  But with Beetle underpinnings it never was a true sports car.

Just add Porsche!  And you can hit the autobahn at 260 kph!  About 160 mph.  :-\

It's an interesting build.

There is actually a lot you can still do to a KG with the more standard 4-cyl "bug" engine that will get outstanding performance without going "full Porsche" like they did.

Yes, but the body looks pretty damn stock.  They didn't go crazy with wheel arches or a spoiler or an air dam or anything like that.  Sure, it is lowered and has wide wheels, but that's about it.

Holy Crap, there is a French version of Wheeler Dealers called...... Wheeler Dealers France!  ;D

It's complete with a tall mop-headed mechanic - a French version of Edd China.

Sure, it's all in French, but the taking stuff apart and fixing it is the same in any language.

I am always in awe of someone that can draw/paint. My mind just does not work that way. In this video Chip Foose draws an updated Jaguar E-Type coupe. I don't care for the final product. It is just how he can draw it all out and layer the drawing to show the details. Same when I see graffiti on passing trains cars. The colors and style and layers just boggles me.

Chip is an amazing artist and I love watching him work, but I also didn't care for his final result....he said he was modernizing the car - bringing it up to date but all I saw was slammed to the ground with enormous wheels. The things he talked about - the exhaust for example - he wanted to cut out a section of the body and tuck the exhaust up into it - but that's where the spare tire is so that would eliminate most of that trunk area. Interesting that he moved the tail lights under the rear bumper - just like they did with the Series II cars but he used Series I lights. I appreciate his gifts, but this one just didn't work for me.

Interesting, I was looking for a hull under the Moke something like an Amphicar but it looks like it's more of a pontoon arrangement with a tunnel hull. I don't know that I would want to be as far offshore as they were in the vid!

I like the Salvage Hunters Classic Cars TV show.   It's kind of like Wheeler Dealers but It focuses more on little cottage industry shops handling modifications to the cars they buy than the actual mechanical repair of them.

Huh?  The one shown at 4:40?   Looks identical to the RH inner wing of my '88 Mini.  One big hole for the big fresh air hose as it bends into under the under wing area up to the dash and a bracket welded on it to hang the washer fluid reservoir.   I think it's typical for the Mk. V (post 1984) and later Minis.

I think he's talking about the vents, like for a radiator.....I seem to recall Jap spec ones being built like that. Or maybe MPi's since the rad is in the front, to give more airflow out from under the bonnet?
Title: Re: Interesting videos
Post by: MPlayle on May 22, 2020, 08:24:38 PM
Actually, I think they did a left-right mirroring of the shell in the static logo shot.  Those are actually the radiator side slots.

I had a 1991 Japanese spec Mini at one time (1275 SPI based) and the right side inner fender was the normal one.  The fan for the a/c sat in the regular big hole for the fresh air intake for the heater on cars without a/c - no slots.

Yup. Absolutely.  It's a boot badge for a Mk I from about 1962 (when they started officially calling them "Minis" up to the intro of the Mk II in late 1967).

I didn't think they sold MPI's in Japan?

At least it didn't have a distributor......so maybe an SPi/MPi mix, with SPi injection?  I haven't looked at an MPi injector setup, so I don't know for sure what it looks like, but that looked like SPi to me.....but on MPi I think the injectors were right at the head, in the intake manifold rather than above the throttle body like an SPi?

That single lane concrete road in Indonesia with the Leyland Innocenti 1000 was interesting - as was the red/green color combo even carried thru the interior. I wonder if that was an aftermarket thing or Italian factory colors? Also, A/C on the Inno 1000? That was a surprise.
Title: Re: Interesting videos
Post by: BruceK on September 18, 2020, 01:02:51 PM
I think the white and red Mini in Indonesia probably came from Japan and was dressed up to look like an earlier Innocenti model. As you know the Japanese are as crazy about Minis as we are in really love customizing them and making them retro and unique.

As to what was available in Japan MPI / SPI, I think all years of Minis were always available in Japan up to the end in 2000 - many privately imported throughout the 1970s and 80s.   It just became more of a formal import effort when Rover made extra efforts to add air conditioning to the cars in the 90s. The advent of air-conditioning in Minis was really done to cater to the needs of the Japanese market.

Somewhere I have a 1990s book from the "305 Club" in Japan. (305 referring to the Mini being 3.05 meters long).  It has a lot of historical photos showing the Japanese embraced the Mini way back starting in the early 60s and raced and loved them since  early days.
Title: Re: Interesting videos
Post by: MPlayle on September 18, 2020, 01:25:28 PM
The Japanese spec Minis of the 1990's were always SPI.  However, when the MPI came out in Europe , the Japanese spec Minis got the MPI block but remained SPI intake.  They also retained the side mount radiator to allow for the a/c.

I don't recall an engine bay view of the Indonesian Mini to tell about the a/c.  I did see a accessory fan clipped to the dash in front of the driver and thought that might be what the narrator was referring to as a/c.

I'll have to watch that video again to see.

Edit: Watching it again, there is an under-dash unit of some sort where the heater would normally be.  There is not enough of an engine bay view to see the other a/c components.  I do like how she uses a panel board to make a picnic table arrangement in the open boot.

The Rich Rebuilds channel on YouTube, which has focused a lot on Rich learning how to deal with wrecked Teslas (and Tesla corporate) has now changed focus and Rich is looking at a classic Mini.  Kinda funny to get a non-Mini person's take on things (apparently the doors on classic Minis are quite thin – amazing!  ;D ).

It even has the Weber carb!  I noticed he did not use the choke when they actually got it to start - probably not used to a manual choke.

It did act as though the carb had been re-jetted for the engine as it ran smoother than the Mini Van I had that came with a Weber installed (the one I changed back to an SU carb).

All Mini saloons had hydrolastic during its run.  It was a big selling point - whether they were a plain Mini 850 or a Mini Cooper, or a Cooper S (or an Elf or Hornet too). But hydrolastic was never fitted to the long wheelbases (estates, Vans, Pickups), or Mokes.

Oh, you think they will be used for good on our side?   Just as likely they could be used against us, or against anyone for that matter.  The targets don't have to be 'bad guys' like terrorists or murderers.  After all, China, for example, is developing 'super soldiers'.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/national-security/china-has-done-human-testing-create-biologically-enhanced-super-soldiers-n1249914

Sure, these are humans and not robots at all.  But it illustrates the push for new tech to be used for military purposes.  Same as it always was.

Cool video, it's pretty amazing what they can program a machine to do these days.

As to Bruce's comment, I'd say it's probably very likely to be used against us at some point in time. One only needs to look at the draconian measures taken in the hard lock down states with this power grab virus thing. People are arrested and jailed for things like tying to open their businesses so they can do such terrible things like feed their families, pay their utilities, etc... all the while those same states are letting people out of prison in droves.
Title: Re: Interesting videos

It's all scare-mongering and I'm a little surprised you've fallen for it Bruce.

Big Bad Russia is no longer a threat (they work thru our political and on line systems instead, which to me is far worse.) so the military has to find another bad guy to "save" us from.

I don't buy any of it.

And my comments about rooting out terrorists were tongue in cheek, but I see I forgot the smiley at the end of my sentence, my bad.

Although it's clear that these could certainly be outfitted with guns or bombs and they'd be hard to stop.

I do wonder what Hyundai was looking for when they bought Boston Dynamics tho, and why our staunch 'mrica First, wall building, evangelical Christian Republican senators would allow a  foreign company to buy a US defense contractor......

Hyundai has always been pretty big into the tech side of things so it's not too surprising they would be interested in the robotics side of things. Japan would have been another likely suitor but they have been pretty independent in that area for quite some time already.

If I had to guess I would say they are probably looking at even more automation in the auto building industry. These types of robots could potentially be direct replacements for some of the things they still currently have humans performing that the current robotics just can't yet do.

The auto industry is already fairly well automated but these types of robots could potentially make it nearly 100% automated. I would guess the cost is still pretty high at this point, but they have to be getting a lot closer it becoming cost effective. They also have pretty ambitious plans for the driverless car market which I am sure plays into it as well.
Title: Re: Interesting videos
Post by: MiniDave on December 30, 2020, 12:07:11 PM
What I'm curious about is whether Boston Dynamics will continue as an entity in the US, and whether they will carry on with developing android like robots? They have decided to go ahead and sell the Spot dog-like robots to the general public now - which is a reversal of their previous policy of only selling to military and police units.....

They have always had a unique perspective on their robot development, not going down the usual road of robot assemblers, self guided rolling carts and such and developing anthropomorphic robots, mostly under DARPA grants. So is Hyundai going to get access to all that technology or are they heading off into a new direction?

Tech - not political, Dan.

Maybe a hot girl robot is next?   ;D ;D ;D

Yeah that will be interesting to see how it pans out, I am not all that familiar with Boston Dynamics short of they do all the cool "real" robot stuff, so can't provide much input there. I would have to assume all the stuff they have learned over the years as far as the autonomous stuff goes would port over pretty well into the autonomous driving arena. For a figure north of 1 billion dollars I would have to assume Hyundai expects to get access to at least most of that but who knows.

Hot girl robots might be cool....

"The Prisoner" starring Patrick McGoohan has been airing daily recently on the tv channel CHCH (Ontario, Canada) station.
Here in NB we get it on Bell TV via satellite (ch 1057 1pm locally)(AST)
I am sure it must be airing elsewhere concurrently--do a search.

A bizarre SciFi/psych thriller/spy / technodrama, it can barely be described. A beautiful resort town in Wales is featured in every episode as well as the infamous Mini MOKES and other strange vehicles and electromechanical contraptions.

A few more episodes before this current run of 17(?) shows is over.  Been many years since I've seen it (on the web) and I don't think I've seen them all. Ya snooze , ya lose !

Be seeing you...

Isn't this a drift car?

So all this money and tech to make a car that slides sideways and makes tire smoke? I never understood "Drifting" as a sport.....

But the technology sure is interesting.....

I was a little disappointed they still had to weld it all together, what's the advantage to doing the 3D print if they can do the same with a welded up from scratch version?

Still not quite Star Trek's replicator, but getting there..... 4.gif
Title: Re: Interesting videos
Post by: cstudep on January 28, 2021, 10:17:19 AM
Aside from the cool factor, I would guess the 3d printing method is a bit faster - start to finish.

Once you have a 3d model, it's a pretty simple process to 3d print it.

Definitely NOT faster. The process is certainly not at Star Trek replicator levels yet, but I see the main benefits being that you can make the individual parts like the collectors and the complicated bends all in one piece, and there is less welding overall. With improvements to the lasers and a larger printing platform, you could theoretically print out entire engine blocks and heads. It will be interesting to see how far they can take this tech.
Title: Re: Interesting videos
Post by: cstudep on January 28, 2021, 01:38:17 PM
By faster I mean the guy specifically working on the car. The time spent printing it was done by someone else, in the mean time the guy who might normally be working on creating that concoction...could be doing something else.

I guess I was thinking about it kind of like time spent at the machine shop. Ultimately it's time "on the project" I guess, but while your block is sitting at the machine shop for a month, your probably working on other things that you could not have been had you done all the machining yourself.

In the end it's still pretty neat either way, it's cool to see the technology of 3d printing advancing beyond just plastic stuff.

Yep, I clean every hole in an engine block before it goes to the jet wash, or before I assemble an engine. The problem with those sets he shows is that you need a much bigger set than he showed, and I need both metric and imperial sizes. I have saved some bolts that my students screwed up in class with one of those sets!

If I have bolts that I'm going to re-use first they get the threads cleaned on the bench grinder's fine wire brush, but most of the time I just use new bolts - the extra cost is just nothing compared to the time it takes to clean all these bolts, and I almost always use new nuts and washers. The only exceptions are specialty bolts that I can't buy new or that aren't readily available. There are a very few of those on a Mini engine or suspension and if I plan ahead I can even get those from Spares.

Suspension "torture" track being run by a three-wheeler in the Reliant Robin style configuration - single front wheel.

That sort of track is meant to be straddled (left wheels on one set of bumps and the right wheels on the other), which puts the single front wheel riding the common edge of all the bumps, throwing it all over the place.

A Mini video whose narration would definitely not be done today.  I think they were trying to be clever and funny.  Still, interesting to see how times have changed.

Here's a "Bugatti" undergoing the same torture test as that 3-wheeler.

At least the three-wheeler held together better than the "Bugatti" copy.

It's a Mk III, but with a bit of Mk I exterior look.  Interior is customized.

His YouTube channel all about his Mini is pretty good IMO.  I subscribed to it.  He really loves his Mini, and I look forward to following him posting videos on his upcoming lap of Europe.

I sub'd too.  I didn't realize they get snow in Greece, so that was cool.

I think it's a mKIII Mini, but made to look a bit like a MK I....so MK I-ish

I look forward to his trip.

98% of the time they are interesting and entertaining, though some of the early ones were rough-ish and not as polished
as the later (more recent) ones.

I agree totally!  Her videos are excellent.  I have been watching Noraly since the beginning of her travels back in India, some 4 motorcycles and maybe a hundred countries ago.  But it's not really about motorcycles, it's about following along with her as she explores the world.   Her attitude is remarkable: positive and honest.

And the visuals in her videos are just stunning.   Currently she is Namibia, having toured around South Africa for about 3 months, and I think her videos there broke everyone's preconceived notions about that country.

Still believe this will be the next unicorn car.  You can still find these next to new for last I looked around $400k.  Some day people are going to realize how special this car was and believe prices will skyrocket.

The sad thing is that Toyota has the technology to build this but chose to reskin a BMW to recreate one of the most iconic Japanese sports cars in the Supra.

Hmmmm.  I'm only about 18 seconds into the video and I've heard a major error.  I guess math is hard.  "... a production run of just over 50 years".  Huh?   So, was it 1949 to 2000? Or 1959 to 2010?   Yeah right.  I stopped the video there.  I may try to watch again later.
Title: Re: Interesting videos
Post by: MiniDave on December 01, 2021, 09:23:41 PM
Yes, there will be more......which is part of the reason I posted it. It's interesting to me to see the perspective of some young guys. They make a REALLY big deal about it being right hand drive, like that is an experience they just can't imagine, and that it is SO unique and problematic.....since it involves adjusting where the car sits in the lane and you have to shift with your left hand (OMG!!!!!!)

If the first guy was chugging up hill in 3rd gear at 35 mph, no wonder the thing felt like a slug.

The second car is an ERA, turbo charged and since it makes 3 times the power of the 998 (?) it was a lot more fun to drive.

But like I said, interesting to hear the impressions of the younger generation on some of this old tech......

#1 question is about driving on right side. Mostly the is it legal one.  Best thing I get from the young crowd is they think my breather is my intake cause most have no idea what a carburetor is, let alone an SU one.

Surprised young ones even know how to drive a stick.  Lol. Shifting left handed is easy, it was weird steering right handed.

Sure looked like more than 40 miles to me - you don't kill a rod bearing THAT badly in 40 miles unless you have zero oil pressure - in which case the main bearing part of the crank would have been blue.

I am not a big fan of converting classics to be but this one looks well executed the only negative being the torque steer but you have to expect that with the hp figures and fwd.

This is one video from a whole series (ten episodes I think) on the build of this Mk I Mini Cooper model.  Very skilled maker who really knows the Mini and adds so many details beyond what just comes in the kit itself.

So based upon all the engineering, prototyping, and fabricating done on that 300 hp Mini above, a kit to electrify your classic Mini has been developed.

Wonder what a turn key car from Gildred Racing will run? Their current 500hp rear drive V-6 engined cars start about $150K I think......

The talk about making them reversible seems pointless to me, who would bother putting a gas motor back in? And who would convert a "priceless" Cooper S to electric in the first place when there are so many later model cars?

With that said, it seems a no brainer to make this a rear drive car and eliminate the torque steer and other issues.

I did also glimpse a Broadspeed GT looking Mini in the background at one point as well as the Mini Marcos GT.

I spoke with the owner of the Harley V twin engined van at the IMM 60 in Bristol UK a few years back.
IIRC he told me he used an Alfa axle as it is rwd. When I asked him how it performed he basically said he had a hard time getting the clutch right and there was a lack of torque with the Harley engine and he led me to believe it did not perform as well as expected.

To me the amazing part about this Mini was not the before/after comparison, but the fact that this is a daily driver Mini, 40 years old, that lives in the UK near the coast and it's in pretty darn good shape!

You can tell the owner really loves her car.

Edd China, of Wheeler Dealers fame, tackles some some regular Mini maintenance items on his Mini-based Outspan Orange car.  It's a nice refresher video if you haven't performed these maintenance items lately.

I'm guessing he was bumping the starter instead of rolling the car in fourth gear to adjust the valves because they didn't want to change the camera setup?

Title: Re: Interesting videos
Post by: MiniDave on July 09, 2022, 08:03:19 AM
That and it was up on the lift?

The timing thing was confusing.....22* @ 5000 rpm? I wonder if that was plus 10* static or something, cause I normally set mine at about 32* at 5K.

At least he got the order right - valves, then timing and carb last.

I'll bet he doesn't drive that thing over 50 mph, it looks like the chassis is about 1/2 the length of a regular Mini!

I've had a windshield wiper quit and walk out when it was needed most before - just like in the video. That's what cracked me up. Of course it really increased the performance of the remaining wiper as the wiper motor only had to expend half the effort.

This weekend Don and I went down to the new Ozarks International (?) Racetrack to watch the vintage cars run. I did not have the turnout I was expecting - usually there are at least 200 cars at one of these, some tracks have way more than that even - but holee crap what a cool track this is!

We got to take some laps at lunch time and wow what a cool track this is. I really wish I would have had my in car cam with me, but the vids I've seen on You Tube don't really show just how steep these elevation changes are.
this track has it all, tight turns, long sweepers, roller coaster sections, on camber, off camber, hairpins - you name it.

This short vid is only to show that you can watch 4 sections of the track from one spot!

It's the only vid I took all weekend, if I find some of the ones that were taken by our "group" in car, I'll post the links here.

This video in a Porsche probably gives the best view of just how steep and roller coastery this track is - I SO want to run this in a classic Mini!

Definitely a major brown pants moment! Not sure how traction was lost, but holy crap that Mini did some fancy moves.  Anyone know whose Mini that was?

A side note:  How can you witness that event unfolding in front of you on the road and not say a word? I mean I understand being stoic but that's just crazy. Personally, I'm A LOT more vocal than that. If I stub my toe, within a nanosecond I immediately express my surprise and thoughts quite out loud using lots of colorful descriptive language!  I would be providing play by play on the Mini spinout on my dashcam!
