Title: Drill bits
Post by: joakwin on July 16, 2018, 01:20:00 PM
I just ordered a drill doctor 750x, I'm always drilling holes into some type of metal, and replacing drill bits all the time has gotten old, this is something I've looked into for a long time and I just can't take it anymore, so I ordered it up....comes in tomorrow and then I have my work cut out for me

Good luck, I was never successful with mine. I watched all their videos, talked to them on the phone endlessly and in the end they couldn't understand how I could not get it to work.

The biggest problem I had was getting the chisel point square to the flutes - it was always off, usually by quite a bit.

I bought a cheapo hf drill bit sharpener.  It does ok in a pinch.  Can't get small bits to come out even enough to be useful.

I was able to get them sharpened OK, but like I said I could never get the chisel point lined up right across the flutes, it was always off, usually by about 30*......they worked OK, but I had t always use a pilot hole when I tried to drill with one of the ones I sharpened. Hope the OP has better luck, then maybe he can show me what I'm doing wrong.

Like I said, I watched all of the videos and followed the instructions carefully, but no luck for me.

a few days of what felt like I was wasting my time and watching every video on you tube for it, I figured out the machine
and I have knocked out 5 drills bits so far on the 118 setting
and i tested the bits after i got done with them to make sure they will cut

the problem i was having was with the adjustment of how much to take off,
on the 135 setting, if i had the adjuster mto knob to max, it would pretty much flatten the bit
on the 118 setting on max, the chisel cutting point kind of gets a square before it starts to round down to the heel relief area

on the 118, if the mto knob is at the lowest setting, it doesn't sharpen the cutting face all the way to the end of the bit
i haven't tried the mini setting on the 135 yet

i still have lots to learn

I always had pretty good luck by hand on the side of the grinding wheel. Down to about 1/8" then I have a hard time but bits that small are cheap to buy new.

I finally stepped up and bought the $300 mac tools drill index bits are not great quality but pretty good. The cool thing is they warranty all of them forever even if it's just dull.
I have got my money back many times I have a handful every Thursday when mac comes in. I don't even worry about breaking or abusing them anymore. If you don't have a shop a mac tools guy stops at you can send them in but not sure if it would be worth it with the shipping cost.

At home, I just have a bunch of random bits that I hand sharpen I do have a drill doctor but like others never got acceptable results I also have a darex tool grinder with an air spindle that can work in .0001 range of accuracy that will make a bit better than new but that's not something most would buy I have it for milling machine bit resharpening.

I wonder about those jigs that you set up to work on a bench grinder they look like they would work good and they are inexpensive. Anybody have/use one?
