Went down to 9° last night (-13° C) but it's already bounced back to 19 now, might hit 30 before we're done......Sunday it's supposed to be back up to 54°, good day to move a car into the shop. Anytime it's above freezing it's a good day in winter - to me. Those single digit days hurt......

Jan and Feb are our worst months, it will be cold, grey, gloomy, damp and in general just miserable. Good time to go to the islands, mon......

During these cold months we keep the bird feeder and bird bath full, and we have a heater in the bath. I forgot that they need water to drink in winter too, we'll see the squirrels up there drinking as well as the little birdies.

I noticed our hawk has been around again - we used to worry about the Pups but now that they're 12lbs or so, I think they're safe. Wouldn't mind if Mr. Hawk fattened up on some squirrel meat tho......

Even at 12lbs, I would still be concerned about the hawks thinks the pups might be "lunch".

My parents' two Affens at 8-10lbs still attracted the hawks' attention.  The hawks in their neighborhood had been known to snatch other small dogs even being walked on lease.

Dropping towards freezing here, but did see the sun peaking out.  I can do cold, just don't like the grey cloudy hazy sky.

I can do the cold too, but the damp and grey does get me down. Today we have bright sunshine and its all the way up to 29 now....but it still feels really cold.

We got snow in San Antonio, Texas last night.  Still on the ground this morning - about 1/2" to 1".  Melting in the bright sun this morning.

Well snow happens about once every decade (or greater) in San Antonio.

Online news reports were saying the last snow was about 1987.

There have been "snows" in the nearby hill-country much more recently, but a long time since San Antonio officially had snow.

An inch of snow then rain so it's mostly gone.

Well, we got about 2" of snow Sunday just in time to have a white Christmas, then last night it started again although it's very fine and light snow, we have about an inch down now and I doubt it will go much more - the real bad news is the 4* F (-16C) temperatures! Much too cold to work in the shop, I can run the heater but it will take a couple of hours to get it warm enough that the tools don't freeze to my hands.....I may wait a few days and see if it warms up again. Forecast says low teens till Thursday when it's supposed to get up to the low 30's again, but then down into the low teens again for the weekend. Yep, it's winter in Kansas!

The red birds are grateful for the full feeder and unfrozen bird bath right now...........I may have to fill the feeder again by the end of the day and I just filed it yesterday. Got to keep my friendly bug eaters alive for spring!

Ever notice how when suburbanites want to show how much snow they got they take pics of their patio furniture?

Always.  LOL.  It's just cold here, and a little wet but no snow or ice.  Going to be cold all the way through the new year.  Need it to warm up so I can replace the carburetor on my truck.  Getting rid of the old worn out asian one and replacing with a weber.  Was also going to clean the motor and reseal the valve cover gasket, but I don't have a shop or a heated space so I need it a little warmer than mid 30's

Well, it's warming up a bit, it will be all of 24* tomorrow when Dan is here putting the headliner and windshields in Stan's car, if he could have delayed a couple of days it's supposed to be in the mid-40's by Monday......

Weather app on my phone says it's sunny and 10* right now (-12*C) - they got the 10 part right, but it's a long ways from sunny......

Well todays temp is 6* headed for -4*, tomorrows high 5* and low of -3*............loverly.

Watching the boys outside reminds me of those lizards in the desert - standing with one leg up - only in Neo's case two paws up, one front, one back   ;D

Took my temp just now, 101*, third day in a row and shows no sign of abating. Neck hurts, eyes burning, head feels like a clamp around it being tightened, every joint hurts like hell......more loverly.....I can't remember ever being this sick this long.

Just checked again......102.9*

It sounds like you got the worse version, agree with Bruce, don't mess around with it.

My 13 yr old had a mild version over the break, but we didn't realize it till 5 days in.  He only had minor fever 99/100 every now and then.  Just was very tired.  He was the same way about a month ago and that turned out to just be allergy congestion.
Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?
Post by: MiniDave on January 16, 2018, 10:49:05 AM
Went to the doc today, consensus was the usual, rest, liquids, aspirin (Tylenol for me) he did give me an aggressive antibiotic to take to "just in case" but didn't find anything horrible wrong - and he says it's not the flu, just a bad ass cold (young doctors!) I've never had one this bad in all my life and I've been around for a while.....he says it will take a few more days to knock it out.

Driving over to the Urgent Care place in the -1* temps my whole body was shaking so bad I wasn't sure if I'd make it, then the nurse had to fill out the papers as my hands were shaking so badly. This one is NOT fun......

Supposed to be almost 60* on Sat, hope I'm feeling well enough to finally get back in the shop, even if only for a couple of hours.

I'm hoping the supposed warm up happens.  Last time they forecast a warm up after a major freeze it never materialized.  I need to start taking a car apart.

That's a nasty "cold".

My water lines from the street froze up.  I've been running my hose right off the water heater to rinse subframes to prep for paint.  This slows that process down.

On the weather front, while it was just 13 degrees here earlier this week, today it was a balmy 70 or so.  What a change!

Hit 71 here today too!

Also fixed my shower knob that froze and broke. The inside of the shop actually froze.   Go figure.  There wasn't any access panel to fix the T mechanism thing for the knob so had to cut into the wall.  I'm thinking one of my car pics will cover this new access hole very well.

I'm sprung!

I got home a few minutes ago and I'm waiting for the crazy to die down a bit with d'Boiz, who are currently tearing around the back yard at full speed.

I am not well, just no longer hospitalized, still got a ways to go to get to "well" but I should see a little improvement each day. To me the biggest improvement will come from being able to sleep!

Thanks for everyone's concern and comments!

Just had an actual meal that wasn't hospital food, what a treat.....

I doubt I'll make it past 9pm tonight, but the thought of being able to sleep uninterrupted will be a little like heaven compared to the last 15 days - I've probably slept all of 15 hours in the last two weeks....sleep deprivation is a real thing - but they had to keep me coughing to keep the crap moving up out of my lungs which of course, meant I couldn't sleep a wink.

There is still a lot of crap in my lungs that has to work its way out.....

1st night home, lots of dozing off, finally after dinner I went to bed (8 pm!) Between bathroom breaks and coughing fits managed to get about 6 hours of sleep in, and rather than wake the rest about 4 am I went downstairs and dozed on the couch. I can't get over how weak I feel and how hard it is to catch my breath after going up or down 5 stairs ( our house is a split level - bathrooms are either up or down) but there it is.....

More wonderful hospital leftovers - as they were trying to make sure I wasn't dehydrated they went a bit overboard, my ankles, calves and thighs were so swollen the skin was tight as a drum, yesterday afternoon the Dr. gave me a shot of Lasex to reduce that, I pee'd out over 2 L in 2 hrs without drinking anything! The swelling is mostly down, but I still have a ways to go there too.....oh, and since the gowns are open at the back when I'd sit on the coach or in a chair my sweaty skin was in contact with how ever many other sweaty people had sat there, and I got a terrible skin rash right where the opening was, all the way down my back....no idea how long that will take to clear up!

Oxygen is like a drug. after using it for a few days non-stop, when you have it available you want it, and I think I'm going thru a bit of withdrawal right now......

Other than that I'm weak as a kitten and I think I'm faced with about a two week recovery before I feel even close to normal again.....but, one day at a time.

Supposed to warm up to almost 60* today so I'm going to take advantage of the respite.......Rose's Audi front suspension went down over the last few days and based on her description it sounds like either the air line broke or the fitting failed. So this after noon Don is coming over to pull the front wheel so we can see what's up - whether I have to replace the fitting or simply fix the end of the line.

We're also going to start the Racing Green up and let it get completely warmed up again....it hasn't run in weeks and has been outside due to Stan's car being on the lift.

That will probably be all the excitement I can take for today.

Tomorrow I have a follow up appt with my new primary care Dr.

Should be high 40's/low 50's all next week, hope I feel well enough to take advantage and knock out a few projects.

Even if Don comes over to help you need to stay in supervisor mode and let him do the work. 20.gif My experience with supervisors is that they just stand around and watch and get in my way.

The projects I'm planning to do involve sitting down at a table and sorting thru some parts - about 20 min at a time's worth. No lifting, no working on cars. Dons going to pull the wheel and I'm going to squint up into the wheel well and see what I can see, other wise I'm done on that too.

Saw my new Dr today, she says don't expect miracles - two weeks minimum just to get back to some semblance of normal.

Lovely parting gift from the hospital, I have a horrible rash all over my body that itches unbelievably....she put me on a course of Prednisone to counter it, but it takes a few days to take full effect - till then I'm slathering on creams and salves to just make it possible to sleep.....don't know if it's a reaction to the antibiotics, the treatment they gave me, the die marker for the CAT scan or what.

I'll save you the gory details and not post a pic......

Snowing again....I knew winter wasn't quite done with us. Looks like we could get several inches out of this one, and it could hang around till the weekend when it's supposed to warm back up into the 40's....

Is winter over already?

All the temps I see forecasted for the next two weeks and more look to be at worst in the 40's, and the song birds are back too.

We have had surprise snowstorms in early March, so I wouldn't put away the snow shovels, gloves and winter coats just yet and I don't want to jinx us, but I'm thinking we could be done.

Yeah, we did too, about 1/4" of ice on the cars, glad I don't have to drive anywhere today, tonight we're supposed to get either more freezing rain or 1-3" of snow, then tomorrow it's supposed to warm up to almost 40* and rain again that night. So to answer the question I asked earlier - NO, winter is not done with us!  ::)

Mini season is less than a month away now ! :-\

All the white we have on the ground is actually sleet, not snow.....surprised me when I took the dogs out to find it was so slick.....

It will be in the 40's the rest of the week, so it shouldn't last long. I have to get some seed down with some straw over it that I bought the other day, to cover up the bare spots. Every time the boys come in from running around the back yard I have to take them to the sink and wash the mud out of the pads on their paws, it's a PITA but if I don't we'll have mud everywhere!

I NEED it to get warmer.  I need to repaint the mini's roof, due to 2 small spots where the gutter transitions to the roof which developed small cracks last summer and now have rust stains; we know what that means...

Somebody advised that I use some sort of flexible filler in the bottom of the gutter, then prime and paint.  Weeks of rain last summer allowed water to get under there, so I can only hope that there's not too much rust under the paint and filler.

It's gonna be a heck of a job to sand the roof, excavate the gutter and begin again.  I also need to find a paint that can tolerate harsh conditions, look half-way decent and that I can apply myself - without a compressor/spray gun.  Local body shops, if I can find one that won't rape me, are asking close to $1000 for painting the roof - only the roof.  I'm hoping one of the vintage racers knows somebody that can help out.
Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?
Post by: MiniDave on April 02, 2018, 05:08:15 PM
The problem with painting the roof is that it's at eye level, any little mistake is so easy to see. Still, if you take your time it should come out nicely. I find a rotary wire brush in an angle grinder will clean those gutters down to bare metal  in no time....

We're supposed to be in the 60's by Thursday, hope the warming trend extends all the way to Denmark!

Weird wacky weather this week. Yesterday it was hot and muggy, and storms were headed our way - typical Kansas spring weather, T-Storms in the late afternoon and evening. It did rain, but only for about 20 min, then it was just hot and REALLY muggy....I don't do hot/humid well, I wound up feeling nauseated while trying to work on the Clubby and had to stop and cool off.

It was 80° when I went to bed, and 36° at 8 am today......and the temp is still dropping, they're calling for snow tonight and a low of about 27, high Sunday mid 30's....Tues when I leave for CMU it's supposed to be 70° again!

I took my Mini for a drive today.  It was cool enough that I left the windows up.  And very windy.  So windy I saw something I've never seen before:  as I was driving out in the country I was rapidly approaching what looked like a giant insect ahead of me that was just about windshield height and it wasn't moving, but it was getting bigger and bigger as I approached it at about 50 mph.   At the last minute I realized it was a bird trying to fly directly into the wind but making no forward progress at all.   Missed it by that much!

3rd summer here of long-term smoke I'm getting really tired of it. But those idiots in power that live in Portland and Salem shut down forest management, logging, and controlled burns because its bad for the environment ::) Our current governor got some of that fixed but then they opposed it I think we're still on for some burns and fuel reduction logging this fall winter I hope. I don't know if I want to stay living here if this is the new norm.
Going from 9 months of winter to fire back to winter gets old. Summers are the whole reason for living here for me so if they are gonna suck im done.

We always have had fires in Oregon but they used to be allowed to fight them better and the forest had fewer fuels due to better management and being allowed to log more

I don't get how they think logging is bad but millions of acres a year burning and homes burning is ok.

Although most the smoke this year is not from Oregon but the last two were I can deal here and there with it but every year is starting to get to me. really gets my alleriges going as well.

Rain all day here, which I'm somewhat happy about as I spent Sunday and Monday laying down fertilizer, soil amendment, grass seed and straw to cover it all and keep it moist. Mother Nature then did all the watering for me! We're supposed to get more rain the next two days so I'm hopeful it all got watered in and will grow before it gets cold. We had a long hot dry spell this summer and the grass went dormant, but it's all greened up nicely now, of course that means I'll have to start mowing again. Gorgeous day today at last - sunny and about 70*, perfect British car weather! I took Don's Pup for a spin around the 'hood and boy is it a sweet driving car now! The final drive change makes the car so much more drivable in the city, and the lack of NVH means it's really quiet -  much smoother and quieter than my '89 Mini, that's for sure!

80 mph is now about 3500 rpm so the car is definitely more drivable for long highway runs, before the noise and harmonics made a long drive hard to take, even with earplugs....now it's almost like a modern car. The power comes on strong from idle but once you cross the Vtec threshold and the power really comes on you do get a little torque steer in 1st and 2nd as the tires try to find purchase - it's easy to control tho.

All in all a nice driving car  - now.

Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?

We got hammered as well, if not worse than Wilmington.......plenty of smashed houses around here, but most in our community are fairly OK - just some shingles out, high water and maybe tree damage. Roads getting back to normal. We were pretty lucky - it could have been a lot worse. 23" rain - the thing moved so slowly when it got on land  - then dams broke, sink holes sprung up roads caved in and flooded. Sad thing is the inland rains in combination with high tides and a full moon are causing more flooding locally and in Wilmington as well. Glad I got a generator but my friend who is an electrician still in repair mode as he had 2 feet of water in the house and has to rip out sheetrock, flooring, etc.... kill mold and rebuild. Our house has a crawl space that got wet - now fan and hot weather drying it out.

The river has been up for weeks now, and this is the third of four days of rain we're getting. My yard is floating, the dogs can't find a non-puddle spot to poop! It's been raining pretty steadily all night and will till about 11, then it's supposed to start up again about 2 and rain all night and half of tomorrow, then taper off.

On top of that, it's 72* now but by Thursday it will be in the high 20's at night!

All next week we're gonna have highs in the 40's

Well you've driven it in the rain already so the snow should be better. All you have to do is dress like the kid in Christmas Story and be able to move enough to shift gears. :D

I was telling one of my neighbors yesterday that I thought I had left the monsoon season behind when we left the Philippines.  September was the second wettest on record and the start of October has been much the same.

Today was actually a nice day - the first since getting back.  I took the Moke to a car wash and cleaned it from the trips.

Yes, it is still fukkin hot here.

We are ready for a cold front. I hate cold, but I am ready, as soon as we hit under 50 degrees I will cry like a baby.

Wow, it's been perfect fall weather here for almost a week - sunny days in the 60's and cool nights in the 40's. It could do this till June and I'd be one happy camper but I have a feeling winter is just about to pull up and smack us.

And winter is upon us, snow yesterday that went away today, but after getting all the way up to 34* today, it's headed to 15 tonight. This weekend is the date they re-scheduled for the Lake Garnet Grand Prix and the high tomorrow of 35* and Sunday 40*

Going to be cold running those open cars like Super 7's and Bugeyes!

The back door to my shop literally fell apart, the bottom foot just fell off - I was able to stuff the old water logged rotted piece back in but as it is I can't open it. It's an unusual size - 30" X 80" but I found a steel clad door down at Home Depot that should fit perfectly, I just need it to warm up a bit so I don't freeze my hands off trying to install it. The only thing is the new door won't have any windows, but I'll have to deal with that. I liked the window because it let in some light and I could peek out and watch Da Boiz out in the back yard.

Low 40's here this morning.

I bundled up and took the Moke and met some other local Mini owners for a short run to the local Cars&Coffee, then a late breakfast/brunch.  I had fun with it - heard several folks at the Cars&Coffee declare I "had balls" being out in the Moke in the cold.  When the Minis pulled in as a small group (7 cars total: a Pup, the Moke, and 5 Saloons), heads turned and we drew the crowd.

2nd winter storm of the year already, started with freezing rain and quickly turned to snow...... forecasters say we could get between 1 - to 7" of snow, or it may not amount to anything depending on which way the storm tracks. A few miles north of us already has about 3-4" on the ground but where I am while it is snowing, it's mostly just turning to water when it hits the ground. However it's supposed to just keep getting colder all day, down to 15* tonight..

Well, it's warmer right now than it has been in three days - 29* isn't saying much but it should get into the 40's today and the next few days, so hopefully that will melt the rest of the snow on the roads. The highways are pretty much clear but some neighborhoods are really rough, as after the plows came thru and chewed everything up, it's partially melted and refrozen several times. Makes for very slidey conditions especially in the shade areas..... I was driving out of my neighborhood yesterday - doing about 20 mph - and as I came up to the main road I eased on the brakes and it felt like the car accelerated! Fortunately there was a clear spot for my left tire about 10 feet before the intersection and when I hit that the tire bit - also I was lucky there was an opening in the traffic right then, but scary stuff when you realize you're no longer in control and just a passenger headed for a big crash!

Tomorrow's high will struggle to get to 30*......tonight's low will be 16....so 25 to 55 to 16 in one day.

6" of heavy wet snow so far and it's still coming down....my neighbor got to get out the huge snowblower he bought 4 years ago - first time since he bought it! He already had my drive done by the time I got up this am, but we have another inch down since then, so I'll have to hit it again either later tonight or tomorrow morning once it stops.

The worst part was getting it off the cars - stuff is heavy and doesn't push easily.

The whole neighborhood has tree branches down and we have power outages all over town - including Don's house - I have the genset ready to run if needed but so far we're good. You can see in my pic how heavy the snow is on the power lines, and tree branches are lying on the lines too.....

Are "The Boys" having fun in the snow?

Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?
Post by: MiniDave on January 12, 2019, 10:31:45 AM
Remo loves it, Neo not so much. The snow really packs into their fur, the only way to get it out is to put them in the sink and use the sprayer to rinse it off. Then I have to dry them off so they won't get cold. We have little snow jackets for them, but they don't cover their legs or belly.....

I refilled the bird feeder and it's well populated right now! We go thru about 10 lbs a week in the winter, but I'm happy to do it. Birds eat bugs. When the birds land or take off from a branch it really shakes the snow off and the limbs rebound upward....tree companies will have a bonanza next week as soon as it warms up a bit - broken branches down all over the place.

We're supposed to get hit again next Sat....not a good time to be travelling.

I left for work about 6:45, it was 41*....by 8 am it was 29*, and that was the high for today.....even tho the weather service insists it was supposed to be 60* today! We did hit 60 yesterday, but it was cloudy, spitting rain and way high humidity all day, so not exactly a pleasant spring day.

Tomorrow and Wed we get freezing rain and snow......oh joy.

'Ol Phil didn't see his shadow, so we're supposed to have an early spring, but we're forecasted for30's and low 40's for the next two weeks and single or low two digit temps at night  - spring can't come soon enough for me!

We're at 7* this morning and it snowed again last night, but not much and it was a very dry snow - it's already melted off the windows that face the sun on the car in the morning. Today it's sunny and bright, so I expect it to get up to 20* today.

We had about 4" of ice on the front steps so I had to get my biggest crowbar out to chip it off, otherwise we couldn't go down the steps as the ice was rounded off so much you just couldn't balance on the step.

I also used about 8 gallons of hot water to get the ice off the windshield of the Audi (all wheel drive so it can get around fine in this stuff) but I didn't even bother to do the MINI Clubman yesterday.

I've heard of doing that, but never heard of the result coming out well -- meaning a huge crack in the windshield is the result.  But it works for you?

Yes, you just start at the top and don't pour it all at once, just let it run down the windshield. Bonus, you have clean windows when you're done!  ;D

Bright, clear, sunny, mid-to-upper 60's with some breeze.

Took the Moke out to run to brunch, then a couple hours driving into the lower hill country between San Antonio and Boerne.

Needed the drive - both the Moke and myself.  Been a stressful week with more haggling over trying to renegotiate the pay terms of my contracting.  It has not been going well - the client has not been negotiating in good faith and dragging out paying my January invoice until the last possible day.  I may be done with them.

Time for them to see if they can get along without you? When things don't go well for them, it will make negotiating much easier - if you choose to go back with them. But you may be too busy with your new, better clients.

This was from Monday, that plus Tues and I am toast now.  I am honestly hoping for another cold snap, typically god punishes the spring breakers, so we are close to getting some cool weather soon.

Just rained golf ball size hail here for about 30 minutes along with probably an inch of rain.  Doesn't look like it's done either.  This one may have finally done our roof in.  Carport held up really well though.

Mark, sorry to hear about the hail.   Hope it's not too bad, but golf ball size hail will definitely leave some sort of damage.

We really lucked out. That same storm didn't hit us just 5 miles south of you.

Thanks Bruce, glad we were home and not out in it.  Didn't see much damage, but I'll need to get someone out to look at the roof.  Carport held up really well, it must be older and made of real metal.

Well roof is toast. Not surprised, it's 16 years old which is long life in north Texas.  Now to wait to end of storm season to file. Cause as we've seen it could happen again this spring.

I bit the bullet a few years ago and had a metal roof installed, supposed to last 30 years.

My asphalt roof lasted 12 years and cost nearly as much.

Been pretty quiet here in north Texas, looking at another soaker tomorrow, but it pales in comparison to the midwest.  Have friends and family all over OK and KS posting crazy amounts of water.  Just looked at a river level map on weather channel and the Arkansas river is really bad especially around Tulsa.

Dan, hope you guys are on high ground from the river.

Need to give my old man a call in KS, he's SW of Wichita and the rain maps shows areas of 24+ inches.  Curious about the Walnut river too since it runs parallel to the Arkansas river about 10 - 15 miles apart.

Yeah, we're saturated.....the sump pump rums all day and night, although mine has stopped today finally, just in time for another storm to move thru this afternoon.

It's tough to keep the grass at bay between all these rain periods.

My pond in my south property went from dried up to overflowing....

Huge tornado cut thru just west of me, it hit Lawrence and the weather guys had it going right thru Susan's neighborhood and I feared the worst, but she said it missed her by a block. I think there was substantial damage to the KU campus, as it's just west and north of her. Seems like it was on the ground for over an hour, but I haven't seen the reports yet to know how bad.....

Torrents of rain came out of that system, but we barely got sprinkles

We've had heavy storms just about every day for some time now.  We live a few blocks from the river but up the hill.  Our townhouse is off 11th street and these photos are 14th where the river has come over the banks.  Further south it's even worse.

On top of that we're supposed to have cold, blowing snow and bitter wind the rest of the week......gonna be a fun Halloween for the little ones. Not sure if we'll need to buy more candy at this point or not.

So who's had the craziest weather?  Was 70 yesterday with rotation and tornado warnings to actual snow pellets here in TX.  Just north of us got actual snow flakes.
Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?

We got lots of rain, followed by ice, followed by about two inches of actual snow flakes, which was OK by me as they were predicting 9" of actual snow flakes.

We decided to knock the snow off the cars tonight, so tomorrow's sunshine will de-ice the doors and we can get them open.

Good thing tomorrow is sunday, so no commutes to worry about, by Monday it should be all gone at least off the roads.

Today's forecast - Ice.

Continued icy today......so much so that airplanes are skidding off the runways at the airport and businesses are closed all over the city.

The good news is it's supposed to warm up just enough that the ice that's falling now will turn to rain and melt it all, as well as wash off the tons of salt they've been laying down.

I think I'll just stay home today!

Topped out at 3* this morning, but the sun is out now and it's all the way back up to ....erm.....3! Had to wait for my weather to update.

Not supposed to be a whole lot warmer than this till Sat, but once we get thru the next couple of days it's supposed to warm up  back into the 40's....crazy Feb weather but typical for Kansas.

I saw 87 on the truck temp which was forecast for today, with humidity we had a heat index of 91.

Going to rain tomorrow and drop back into a high of 70 next week. Back to normal for FloRida.

We have had an extremely wet winter, I have not had to run my sprinklers all winter and that is a rarity.

We are typically on a fire alerts by now, instead the Fire Service is taking advantage and doing controlled burns all over the area to burn off the underbrush fuel. We have not had a bad fire season since the mid 90's here, I thank our forest service for that, they learned their lesson in the 90's and have been very diligent the last 20+ years.

I took a long drive out in the country today in my R53 MINI because of cabin fever/boredom.  Started out with the windows down enjoying the fresh air, but after 40 minutes or so I put them up and cranked on the a/c! Unseasonably hot here today.  But it was bright and sunny with the trees fully  green now and the wildflowers were in full bloom.  I was surprised at the numbers of cars on the roads - I was listening to a podcast during the drive and I actually forgot about the whole pandemic for a while. T'was a very pleasant day over here today - sunny, warm and a gentle breeze wafting through, so Hyacinth and I drove up to the estate and planted some daffodils.  No, we didn't hold hands and gaze into each other's eyes...

We also moved a ton of crocuses from a grassy area to under the walnut tree.  We also stood for an eternity and watched a small, chubby mouse that had ventured beyond a woodpile and was nibbling on various tidbits it'd found in a pile of brush that I really need to pass through the woodchipper.

I believe that it was a beautiful day today, but I only saw it through the apartment window.  Hyacinth had decided that it was 'the day' that we find a 'spice rack solution' to address the otherwise adequate (in my mind) current wall-mount spice rack which has been sitting on the floor for the past year and half.

After careful sorting, grouping, measuring and calculating, she found an in-cabinet solution from (https://www.verticalspice.com/ (https://www.verticalspice.com/)) which will necessitate our losing the margarita glasses when we relocate the cake pans and blender.

I hope to go outside tomorrow.

I'd love to be down in the shop today getting something done or built, but I'm stuck up in the house watching the snowglobe outside......the shop is holding at 38* so nothing is freezing at least, but when my small compressor tries to start (must have a small air leak somewhere, it runs about once every day and a half for about 1 minute) it really struggles.

SKmini how do you heat your shop, nat gas? propane? electric? in-floor heat?

The most expensive running cost: electricity.  Most of the electricity generation here is coal; I sometimes wonder how much has been burned to heat the shop.  I put in a 60amp/220v service into the garage years ago that I don't regret.  No problem running the compressor, welder and heater at the same time. The natural gas line for the house goes right past the shop and I should have moved the meter and put in a natural gas radiant heater at the same time I upgraded the electrical service.

No, I figured that.....just thought it was probably icy from your description.

We seem to get two extremes here when the roads get bad - those driving 10 mph on the highway with the flashers on and those who think it must be 70* and sunny even tho there are cars in the ditches on both sides of the road......idiots in other words.

16 and flurries this morning. Having my coffee before attempting the trip back to the shop.  My driveway at and street to the shop was one sheet of ice when I left yesterday as it was.  The slight slope down the street before going back up meant no braking action.  I just got it pointed straight and let it idle it's way down to the end of the street to where they had sanded the main road.  On the way there yesterday there were so many wrecks on hyw75 that it was completely shut down.  I took back roads which turned out to be difficult. I could only do about 20mph before getting squirrely.  One section up a hill I wasn't sure I'd make it.  Too many cars and trucks in ditches to count.  One guy in a dually truck stuck at the top of a hill in the middle of the road with his wheels just spinning.

They salted and sanded last night apparently because I was able to do the speed limit without any worries.  Shop street is still sketchy but I can deal with that.

I guess I shouldn't mention the t-shirt and shorts weather here of 72°.

So I won't.  ;D

Of course 5 months from now it will be so freakin' hot here that it will be quite unbearable to work outside.

All good things must end.  The forecast for next week is that it will be freakin' 13° here.  And snowing.  That's like absolute zero for us. Kelvin.

They changed it to a high of 10 and low of 1 now.  Merging onto the highway this morning I drifted my way into traffic accelerating through about 40mph.  To the guy not slowing to let me merge he quickly gave me space.  I managed to not do a 360 degree spin but had it about 45 degrees for a moment.

It was 9 this morning when I went out to my truck. Got up to about 18.  The next two days will have lows in the negatives.  The roads have been great the past couple days.  Zero anything on them, yet you'll be doing 75mph down the highway and some jackass is in the left lane doing 40mph.  If I were a trooper they'd get tickets for being a hazard.

It got down to 7° and it snowed about 5-6 inches last night.  Of course that's nothing for a lot of the country.   But it's a huge deal here where it has not snowed that much since 1985.  This is the first snowfall many people in this area have ever seen, and for some it may be the only snow they see their entire life.  Grown adults are laying in the snow to make snow angels because they've seen that on TV and movies.

As you can imagine with no snow removal equipment the area is just about 100% completely shut down.  And it's going to be just as cold tonight too.  So the snow is going to be around for at least several more days.

I was supposed to fly down to Dallas tomorrow for recurrent ground school and my sim rides.  That was just canceled and I stay home till the 20th as of now, which is pretty good cause I've been home since January 28th.  We're supposed to get 3-5 more inches by tomorrow night.

Only supposed to get to -11* tonight, up from the earlier forecast of -16!

Currently, it's -2, and it hasn't been above zero all day.

And just to make things even more interesting, the local poco is running rolling blackouts thru the area - no warning, or schedule, just one minute it's on, the next it's dark. They're only supposed to be 1/2 to 1 hour long.....some of the larger apartment complexes and office buildings are having problems with not being able to get their heat back on after the blackout. I imagine if I had a heat plant at an industrial building that blew a bunch of controls or something due to an unannounced blackout, I'd be sending the bill to the poco once I got it back online again.

Crazy weather for sure. It never got above -4 here today and it just keeps snowing. Still calling for -16 for this area tonight, it got down to -12 last night according to my thermometer. Thankfully no rolling blackouts here so all is well on that front. Glad I spent a few days last week cutting and splitting wood just in case, with my small generator I can run fans to circulate the wood stove heat if need be. Several years ago we went without power for 11 days in the dead of winter thanks to an ice storm, that was a long week and a half for sure but we managed thanks to the wood burner.

I have a genset too, and it's ready to run if I need it, but I know folks in Texas and Oklahoma are not prepared for this kind of stuff.....Bruce lived in St. Louis so he knows how to deal with the cold, but to a lot of other folks it's a whole new experience.

If we get hit we'll wait it out for the hour they say it will be off, then if it doesn't come on again I'm firing up the genny.....this old house is leaky enough that it doesn't take long at all for it to start cooling off.

100% accurate, below 0 and snow are mostly "normal" for these parts this time of the year and we are appropriately prepared for such. I can't even imagine the chaos down south this is causing.

-9 this morning now, supposed to get all the way up to 12 tho, and mid 20's tomorrow - so a warming trend is definitely on the way.....just need to hold out a few more days. Clear blue sunny skies this morning, which always brightens my mood - I hate the endless grey days we get in Feb.

I don't think we had a black out during the night, none of the clocks are blinking.

The boys do NOT like to go out to do their business in this weather - it hurts their paws. So Rose found some stuff you rub on their pads called "Musher's Secret" that seems to help, but I have to re-apply it every time. 8 wiggly paws that need to get a good coat on before they'll go out, and even then it's pretty much out and right back again!

We've only gotten about 6" of snow, but we're supposed to get 2-3" more on Wed.

Bruce, does Cooper like the snow?

Not sure if the car likes the snow. We are not going out. Everything is closed and we are fully stocked up with food and water.  Plus, there is no snow removal equipment or salt or anything so the roads are going to be terrible for several days to come. It's cloudy and only 10° so nothing is going to melt or clear up.

We are very lucky that we have not experienced any of the rolling blackouts a lot of people in the area have.

Ahhh.   :-[  It all makes sense now.  You talked about your pooches and asked about mine!

This was the first time he's seen snow and when he went outside he was confused at first.  Then he started romping around in it like crazy having a blast.  He loves the snow and doesn't seem to mind his feet freezing.  But like all dogs with a lot of fur the snow gets caught in his feet between the pads.  When he comes in we were trying to manually pull out all the snow stuck in each feet.  Then I got and idea of using a little plastic tub filled with warm water to dunk his feet into. The snow melts and we dry his feet off.  Problem solved.
Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?
Post by: MiniDave on February 16, 2021, 08:57:54 AM
Yep, on our boys it's easier to just pic them up and hold their feet under the faucet, then dry them off. Otherwise they lick their paws incessantly to get the snow out from between their toes.

I figured he would like it, most doggos the first time in snow they absolutely love it, romping around and burying their noses in it. My boys will be happier when it's not so cold - this below zero stuff hurts! If the snow gets too wet tho it mats up in their fur and it's a mess- as long as it's just the legs I can rinse them off in the sink, but if it gets above that it's time for a bath.

It's already 10* here, warmest it's been in a couple of weeks but we won't get above freezing till this weekend, then next week it should really warm up - we're talking mid 50's! I am down for that!

That's funny Mark!

My electric bill will be high next cycle since I've left the shop heater running.  I burst a line a couple years ago during a cold spell and it wasn't fun to fix.  Luckily contained to the shower area.  I'll probably try to get out there Friday and turn the heater off before leaving for a couple weeks.  Supposed to be back into the 50s this weekend.

After growing up in southern Colorado and the routine minus 20/30 I have to say the this storm was more miserable than any I had seen in Colorado. The local power companies was doing rolling blackouts and didn't inform the local water company so the water ran out and they shut it off. So they advised to boil water when it comes back on. Water company didn't protest the shutoff either.
Will be a big deal next week. Dems already weaponizing it.

I read an article yesterday that indicated ERCOT has known about the "bad winter weather" weakness of the Texas grid since the last big snowstorm like this in 1984.  It was deemed "too costly to upgrade" compared with how "rare" such storms would be.  Since then, the state population has grown considerably, placing greater demand on the system.

I didn't know that they ran the water pipes in the attics down there, instead of in the slab, so when a pipe does break it may be a little more accessible, but it wreaks havoc on the rest of the house with the water cascading down thru the ceiling.

It's funny too how your perceptions change - this morning it was 15 when I got up and the sun was shining, when I let the boys out it feels almost balmy compared to when it was -15 a few days ago! By Monday it will be in the 50's here tho it looks like the cold will hold onto the south for a little longer than us....for a while there it actually hurt to use the handle on the outer door, it was so cold.

Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?

If it's a single story your good cause they are all in a slab, except for maybe exterior wall rooms with plumbing running up to faucets.  The people having the issues are multi story homes.  They build a lot of odd ball second floors around here, where the plumbing can't be inside the core of the house.  Like our master, it's above the garage in what is technically the garage attic space.  If they had run the plumbing under the floor, or in the walls where there is proper insulation we may have been fine. But, the crazy thing is we improved the insulation, the pipes were buried in 2 ft of blown in insulation, and wrapped.  Still popped.

Good thing is the other side has thawed and no leaks. So plumber was wrong and I'll be asking for a discount on our gas line job he is going to do.  Figure I deserve it anyway for all the referrals I got him too.

Today it is sunny and 76°

We were extremely fortunate in that our electricity did not go out, and none of our pipes froze. Of course a lot of people were not so lucky and are still dealing with the aftermath.   Lots of lessons to be learned from this mess.

So.....it's raining. Not too badly right now, just a steady shower, but the weather guessers claim we're going to get hammered later today - pretty much all day and all night, then tomorrow it's going to.....rain - all day. By Monday evening it should stop and be mostly dry Tues and then on Wed, more rain!

I got the boys out this morning so they could do their business, but this afternoon could be interesting trying to get them to go out.

I'm thankful I'm not in Denver, northern Colorado, Wyoming or Nebraska today. Traveling there will be pretty much impossible for the next day or two.....my sister in Denver said it started about 11 am, by 5 they only had about 6 inches but it was supposed to really ramp up over night.

Edit: The storm has moved in - the wind is literally howling around the house now!

And my computer just reset itself to Daylight Savings Time, phone still hasn't changed.

Spring has finally sprung, and in Kansas that means Tar-naders!

So yesterday they were prepping us for a full day and night of T-storms, rain, hail, tornados and.....just armagedden type weather starting this afternoon. So I got up early today and mowed, edged, trimmed bushes, picked up sticks and in general did as much yard work as I could to try and get ahead of the storms.

So, thus far we've had nothing but warm temps, sunny skies and soft easy breezes.....weather guessers!

A few days ago they told us to expect to have 5 days of steady rain and storms......you watch, it'll be hot and humid and not a drop of rain. Looking at the radar it seems to be moving in a broad arc around us from Colorado to the top of Nebraska and back down thru Misery and points east....

Mind you we could use some rain.....looks now like they say we may get some tonight and tomorrow, but I don't see how as the clouds seem to be moving around us. We'll see.

Wow, Indian summer has hit Kansas City (why is it called that?) anyway - yesterday when I got up it was 51, later that day it 90! But it's dry and breezy so not bad at all - that lack of humidity really makes a difference!

We get three more days of near 90's temps then it will drop back into the 80's.....if it stays dry I'll be loving it!

Won't be all that long before we see cold and rain - and maybe snow - again......

This winter come January-February I'm determined to get out of the nasty and go somewhere nice - I could go visit my son in Phoenix, maybe hang out in his shop for a while and play with his X1/9 Honda build, or maybe just do some desert road driving. I'd love to go back to Jerome and spend a few days.....Prescot will be nice that time of year too I'll bet.

Even better, go to Sandy Eggo again for a few weeks and hang out near the ocean again. I miss being able to hop in my boat and head due west till I lost sight of the land and just sit and float, read a book and have a cold drink.

I've been on a rambling road trip for the past 10 days or so, spending most of the time in rural Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia.  Other than some rainy days at the start, the weather has been absolutely fantastic - clear days with lows in the 50s and highs in the low 70s, and low humidity too.  There's just a touch of Autumn in the air - although the trees have not changed into fall colors yet (bummer).

My wife and I toured the Smithsonian Air and Space museum in Washington DC today.   They are undergoing a major renovation so many exhibits were closed, but my wife and I did get to see some pretty incredible things:  the actual Wright Brothers' airplane, Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis monoplane, the Bell X-1 that Chuck Yeager flew through the sound barrier, and John Glenn's Mercury space capsule in which he was the first American to orbit the earth (it looks so crudely made - like someone built it in a basement - it must have taken real balls to climb into that little tin car sitting on top of an explosive rocket and trust it would all work).   Coming out of the museum onto the National Mall I looked up in the clear blue sky to see a passenger jetliner making contrails high up in the sky - and I thought back to the Wright Bro's plane I had just seen and how so much came from that first effort.

Very cool.  When I sat reserve as a new captain it was in DC and I am not exaggerating when I say I've been to every museum there more than once.  The hallocaust museum if you haven't been is one of the better ones.  I have even been bowling in the Whitehouse when my cousin was assistant to whoever ran the treasury at the time. Probably got to tour some other places not open to the public.

Everyone from the gulf coast north has been experiencing some major wind gusts, it's been mid 70;s and very humid for the last two days and now we're under a tornado warning for the areas just north of me. I have a feeling this is going to be a busy night....we might wind up in the basement for parts of it.

Temp has dropped about 25 degrees in the last 30 minutes and a major thunderstorm moved thru with a ton of rain. Now the wind is still blowing hard but it's not raining, lightning or thundering for now.

We seem to have hit a quiet period, the wind is still blowing but it's dropped off some....in fact it's downright calm right now....kinda spooky after it blew so hard all day long.

Now, it smells badly of smoke and the whole neighborhood is smoky looking - we thought maybe a house fire but it doesn't smell like that, more like burning leaves or something. The fire dept posted that in response to numerous calls they went out and checked the area and they believe it's smoke pushed our way from the wild fires in western Kansas.

A large number of areas are without power - friends in Topeka lost power about 6 pm and don't expect it to come back on till sometime tomorrow.

The only good news is that it's really not cold out, but will head down into the 40's by morning. If they keep the house closed up they should stay warm OK. However, it's going to trend down all this week and is supposed to get really cold by Sat,(15*) so I hope they all get powered up well before then!

So yesterday we had high wind, 75* temps, rain, t-storms, power outages and so on - today it's clear, calm, sunny..........................and 32*!!!!!

And headed down the rest of the week, and probably the rest of the year. Winter is here.

On another note, I took advantage of the "breezy conditions" to get some small paintwork done in the garage - once everything was coated I opened the garage door and back door to the shop to ventilate the paint fumes out of the house. Worked a treat, she never smelled a thing!

The big storm that dropped 16' of snow on Tahoe has come across the plains now, we've gotten mostly freezing rain and ice, but they're saying we could get about 4" of snow today. Snow over ice is a treacherous condition.

We were supposed to go to Manhattan Ks for a party but decided not to go at the last minute because we would have been driving home in this or potentially stuck for a couple of days.....maybe we can go sometime next week after the storm has blown past. Their temps are in the low single digits, we've at least made it up to 15*, but it' supposed to go to 0 tonight and maybe even colder tomorrow.

The shop hasn't gotten that cold yet - holding at 50* with the heater on - so I'm still able to work, but I doubt I will be able to tomorrow.

We're supposed to be back in the 40's by Tuesday, then roller coaster between 0 and mid 30's the rest of the winter.....I hope I have all my painting done cause I won't be doing any now till it warms up again in March.

I know it's been worse in other places with huge amounts of rain, tornados and who knows what....

Wind hit n. Dallas around 2 and temps plummeted.  By 5 we had dropped from 70s to 30s and with the wind in the 20s.  Not much warmer tomorrow either, pool will be running next 36 hours I'm sure.  Funny thing is water is still at 60.  Probably feels warm compared to air.  Lol.

We got all our precipitation yesterday when it was still 70.

Michael and I were planning to meet up this morning and take our Minis to a car show to a little town closer to Austin.  But I looked at the weather forecast yesterday (plans were made while it was in the mid-70s) but I saw it was going to be in the upper 20s with high winds.  So we canceled our plans. Sure enough, this morning it was 26° with a strong 25mph wind and wind chills about 15°.    So happy we didn't go.

So - it's been COLD here in KC - imagine that? Cold in the dead of winter!?!?!?!?   :(

But in what's become the norm it will be in the low to mid 50's by Tuesday, then single digits again by Thursday.....we're riding a temperature roller coaster around here.....

I'm just trying to stay in the shop and keep busy till March or so, when it should break and start the summer climb again.

Summer's here......101* today

This morning was even more miserable, even tho it was only 75*, it was about a million precent humidity!

That seemed to burn off as the day went along and we had a nice strong breeze from the south, so in the shade it wasn't too horrible.

Next Tues they're saying 102-104*.....and 100+ every day over the next two weeks from there!

Supposed to go to the "Great car Show " with Don on Sunday - supposed to rain Sunday too and only be in the high 80's with commensurate humidity I'm sure. I may last an hour......

It wasn't all that hot here on Sunday for the car show, about 84 but the humidity and unrelenting sun meant I lasted just over an hour. I drove the racing green Mini so no A/C but once I got going the breeze really helped. I'm a complete wuss when it comes to heat any more.

We're getting the same heatwave as Dan, just 5 degrees cooler. We'll be over 100 for the next week or maybe two - and it's not even August which is traditionally our hottest month!

The high here has been over 100 most days for the last couple of months.

A number of planned jobs on the minis are on hold until the temperature comes down as I often don't get out into the garage until mid afternoon, and by that time it is well over 100 in there.

I have a large window A/C unit in the garage/shop, so I can keep it cool enough to work.....but when the house A/C has to run non stop from about 10 am till 4 am, I'm not anxious to turn it on and add to the already pretty stiff A/C bill. OTOH, it's only 3 months of the year.....  ::)

If I lived in Texas and wanted to work on my car in the 8-9 months of summer you guys have I would definitely have A/C in the shop, not to mention how much nicer it is to get in your car and have it cool and comfortable right out of the garage. A mini-split will do that for you, just ask Bruce!

Post by: Brit_in_TX on July 20, 2022, 10:59:21 AM
I would love to put in a mini-split, but we are not planning in staying in this house much longer (about 18 months) so that luxury will have to wait until the next house!

Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?

I only run the garage a/c when I need to be in there for a while tackling some maintenance or repair problem.  So that may only be one or two days a week at most. I found the best way to do it is make the decision early in the morning to start cooling the garage down when The ambient temperature is only in the upper 70s or low 80s because if I were to wait until the end of the afternoon the interior of the garage, the cars, the tools, the concrete slab and everything else in there has been heat soaking all day and it can easily top 100 degrees or more in there.

When you think about it, having 10,000 pounds or 5 tons of dense metal, glass, and plastic baked to 100° sitting in the garage presents quite a cool down challenge.    There's nothing comparable in a typical home with furniture, bedding, and carpets to that huge garage heat sink.

We had a hail storm come through yesterday. Went from 96 to 75 degrees!  We had the bmw out but luckily no hail damage after looking it over today.

Regarding shop AC, I turn it down low when I'm working in there and set it to 78 when I leave to keep it cool but not run continuously.  When I leave for a couple weeks for work it gets turned off.  I do have an extra portable ac unit that I have as something I can use in the bus which I decided to run this week in conjunction with the regular AC unit.  It actually got too cold!  I had the portable AC at the opposite end of the shop blowing towards the shop AC, so the center area where I work got a double blast.

Post by: MiniDave on July 22, 2022, 01:30:15 PM
Keeping that mass of metal cooler might actually be more cost effective than taking it from hot back down to comfy.....

I have the unique situation that my garage is under the house so to speak - since it's a split level - and even tho the garage doesn't share the house A/C it doesn't get too bad in there, 80 is the hottest I've seen it after we've had weeks of 100* days and in winter 40 is about as cold as it gets, even if we're in low single digits or worse. If it's really humid out I can run my shop A/C and it really cools it down nicely as it takes the moisture out of the air. When it's really hot out I only need to run the A/C for about an hour and it's plenty cool.

The real determining factor is what I'm doing out there.......... hard work where I'm working up a sweat vs just piddling around.

It's even worse further south. Terrible ongoing drought. In this part of Texas entire rivers have dried completely up, and lakes are mostly just small ponds in the middle of a huge empty fields.   Our well is producing substantially less water, which is a huge concern.   We really need a lot of rain.

With the situation out west (Lake Mead is almost empty and Boulder dam may have to shut down - which means Vegas among others will not have power) I can't justify watering the yard like some of my neighbors are doing - fortunately we've had enough rain that I think my grass will make it thru the rest of the summer.

We'll have a brief respite from the high temps till Monday, then we're getting hot again.

Some places are dry as tinder and others are dealing with floods......

Ugh.....so humid here - it's not that hot - mid 80's - but with 99% humidity it's miserable. You feel like you're breathing water and the air feels so thick it's more like swimming thru it than walking. It's raining humidity!

At least if the temps get up around 100 it tends to dry out.....but neither is preferable to me.....I need to go back to Sandy Eggo!
Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?

Well, it's not officially fall, but the weather finally broke.....after weeks of 100* or close to it, we've hit a really nice stretch. Mid 80's days and nice cool low 60's at night - perfect  - at least for me cause the humidity is in the 30% range. My wife hates it because it's so dry but I'm lovin it!

Downside - we haven't had any rain for over a month and the grass is mostly brown with a few green patches where there's a lot of shade. I'm having the yard aerated and overseeded again in a few weeks, so if it hasn't rained by then I'll have to start watering so that the machine can penetrate the hard packed dirt.

The city came thru and removed all the big trees that lined the street, under the pretext that they were all infested with some bug - I don't remember if they were ash or elms - but they formed a nice canopy and shaded the yard nicely. Yes, it's a PITA to clean up all the leaves every fall but I appreciate the shade. Of course they also damage the sidewalks by the huge roots getting under and lifting the concrete up. They claim this fall they'll plant new trees, probably some form of maple that grows quickly, but we're still talking years for them to grow big enough to provide any sort of shade.

I have a giant pin oak in the front yard, I wish it was in the back to shade us from the summer sun to the west and south, but boy howdy has it gotten expensive to get a tree trimmed up. It has some branches that are over the house now that I need to get trimmed, and some dead branches here and there, but it's gotten way too tall for me to climb up and go after it like I used too, so I'll be calling someone.

A man's home is his hassle!

Speaking of homes, the real estate market is still out of control.....I have friends wanting to move into Overland Park to be closer to their office, they've made offers on two homes in the last couple of months and didn't get either. On one they offered 40% over the asking price and someone beat them out with a cash offer that was $10K higher, and this was on a fairly spendy house - final sale price was $450K. They've seen houses offered for $300K that needed "everything" done inside and out and they sell within one day for $75-100K higher than asking. It's nutso out there!

Kind of surprising considering interest rates are very high right now.  Figured the offering more than asking price stupidity had ended by now.
Title: Re: How's the Weather Today?

I'm also surprised at how raising the rates hasn't seemed to slow things down......when I bought my house in Sandy Eggo in 84, we were just coming off the stupid high interest rates of the early 80's, where mortgage rates were in the 20-21% range. To buy a house then you did "creative financing" which usually meant a small mortgage of $100K or so and big balloon amount with the balance due in 5 years. That's how I got a great deal on my house - the seller's balloon was way overdue and he was going to lose the house. I think I only paid just enough to get him out from under it - an unbelievable $150K for a newly renovated 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath, 2 car garage only 3 miles from the ocean. My rate was 10% and I was happy to even get it, a couple years later I was able to refi at 5%, my payments dropped by about 1/3!

A $450K house financed today at 7-9% (is that the current rate?) would be stupid expensive!

Edit: BTW, my old house in SD is currently about $1.25 million, according to Zillow. 4117 Avati Dr. if you're curious. In 2016 when Bruce and I went to SD for MMW, it was valued at $600K, so its doubled in those years.

Yeah we were looking at a property here a week ago outside of town on 10 acres with a spare living quarters with extra garage on the property.  Really nice updated main house and kind of what we're interested in for the "retirement property". Not crazy mansion big, not small, close to downtown, cool features, land to expand on and have things like gardens and chickens, both of which they already had. 600k asking price which is big money in Oklahoma.  But with 7.5 or so interest rates no thank you.  I still have some pinching pennies to do before we make a big purchase anyway, as I'd like to keep the current house as another rental.  Not really wanting to sell it for the down-payment on the retirement house if I don't have to.

The main reason house prices are continuing to rise in the San Antonio and Austin area is the continued population increase in this area.  This coupled with a lack of new houses being built (which is hard to believe if you drive around) is keeping house prices high, even with the interest rates. My realtor friend does not believe there will be a significant reduction in house prices around here due to the undersupply of housing stock.

Also your opinion on house prices really depends where you come from.  I currently live in a 3 bed, 2 car garage, 2000 sqft house, which I bought for $250K in Jan 2021.  In the UK I lived in a 700 sqft 2 bed, no garage house which was valued at a similar price.  So I think housing in Texas in cheap.  My friend lives around 1 hour outside of London in a 5 bed, 1750 sqft, 3 story house, with no garage and that is currently valued around $1 million.

I don't know how you Southerners do it. After a little more than an hour doing some moderate labour outside, I was ready for cccold A/C and a Coke.

27.6*C is only 82*F!  That is like our overnight lows this summer.  It would be fantastic to have that as our daytime high, but we are not likely to see that happen until maybe November at the rate we are going.

We are currently 104*F (40*C) in San Antonio, Texas.

Yes, location and availability have a lot to do with prices.....here in the middle of the great flyover prices have traditionally been pretty reasonable. And while nothing like what my former house in Sandy Eggo has done, as a percentage it's very similar. But in terms of affordability, a LOT more people can qualify for a $400K house than a $1.25 mill....which is why houses in my hood are all of a sudden selling like the proverbial hotcakes, even with so much higher interest rates.

So, we got a little snow last night - probably 5-6" of heavy wet stuff. It's not too bad to shovel, seems pretty wet at ground level so you can just push it, but lifting the gob at the end is a pretty good workout. I've got most of the driveway done now......I do the bottom half first, knock the snow off the cars and move them to the clean area, then do the top 1/3 or so. Heart doc does NOT want me doing this, but I take it slow and easy as I can and still get it done.

The boys were not excited about going out into the snow to do their business this morning.....right now they're both curled up on the couch with me.

My phone's latest update has screwed up how I can transfer pics from it to my computer, so it'll be a bit before I can upload pics.

Power went out about noon, usually the power company has an app that lets you know the approximate time they'll have it back on but today it showed a massive area, so I figured we were in for a long cold day. I lit the fireplace and made sure all the doors and windows were closed tightly.....

After two hours I decided I better get the genset out of the new shed.....I had to drag it thru the 6-8" deep snow from the shed all the way across the yard to the back door of the shop where the cable connector is - it's really heavy - 12500 watts - Once there I got it fired up and as it warmed up I went to the basement to get the cable. I also knew I had to change out the end as the last time I used it was at Don's house and he had a different receptacle. I had just gotten to the back door when the lights came on! Never fails......

I had to get the young, healthy, strong young neighbor guy to help me drag it back up the hill and into the shed.....no way I could have done it by myself.

While I had my snow boots on I re-filled the bird feeder and OMG there must be 100 birds of all sizes, colors and descriptions flitting around it and on the ground under it. It's funny, the little ones seem to grab a beak full of seed and flip them on the ground for the other birds - either that or they're just wading thru to get the ones they like!

We had somewhere between 9 and 10 inches up here. I should have measured before the wind started blowing. It's been a while since we have had a snow like this. Power flickered off about the time yours did, and I thought we were in for a long day, but it came right back on after a minute or 2, thankfully.

I'll take a foot of snow over 1/4"+ ice any day, last time we had a bad ice storm we were without power for over a week. Felt like I turned Amish by the time the power came back on.

We filled up our bird feeders yesterday as well and we now have birds galore for the dogs to stand at the window and bark at.

:undecided:   Crazy cold.  Wow.  Worst cold I experienced was -24F     (-31C) when I lived in Chicago in the 1980s. And that was like a once in a decade thing.

This is not unusual for us in January/February.  Which is why we've all got block heaters and parking lots have outlets to plug them in to.

Well, if any of you watched the Chiefs game you know how cold it's been there in KC!

We left for North Carolina on last Wed and had no issues driving down, a little rain but nothing much.
we went to my grandson's wedding and I was pleasantly surprised to see so many of my extended family members there! I got to spend time with many great nephews and nieces that I had only seen in pics before (thank you Facebook!) as well as my kids, grands and great grands....

We stayed over the day after the wedding and were supposed to head for home on Monday morning, but a storm had moved into the area north of us and Knoxville, Nashville, Lexington and Louisville were all closed. We had hoped to go today but conditions were even worse.....friends in Knoxville said most roads were closed and traffic was stalled, even on 40 hiway.

We needed to get home as I was out of pills, the boys were out of food and we were done with hotel life.....so we headed south - we went to Atlanta, then west to Birmingham and made it all the way to Winfield, Al. The last 40 miles were in the dark and the roads were iced over badly which made for several hours of slow white knuckle driving. We found a hotel that would take us and the doggos, and the only place open for food was a cafe in the corner of the Chevron station across the street - but the food was fresh cooked and surprisingly good.

We've been advised that the roads north of us in Mississippi are glare ice according to the few truckers that have made it thru, it's been suggested that we wait till noon or so to leave to give the road crews time to salt and plow the roads. We're 9-10 hours drive from home and if we leave at noon we won't make it home tomorrow by nightfall (I don't see well at night) so chances are good we'll be in a hotel tomorrow night too, and another snow storm is supposed to hit on Thursday!

Adventures in winter driving!

The boys are being real troopers and mostly just sleep and the car is driving well with no problems, as long as it will start in the morning we'll see how far we get. It's down to the low teens tonight where we landed.....

The next morning we loaded up the Allroad and headed north/west to Mississippi - the roads all the way to the border were clean and dry and we hummed right along, 200ft inside the Mississippi border we were in one lane behind miles of trucks making all of 30-40 mph, even tho the right lane was completely clear and dry. Made for a VERY long day.....we made it to Memphis which had anywhere from 6" to a foot of snow on the ground, main hiways were slushy but plowed, surface streets were plowed but hard packed snow.

We found our way around Memphis (I hate driving there even in good weather!) and finally were on clear cleanly plowed and salted roads in very northeastern Arkansas and then north into the bootheel of Missouri, where we holed up for the night in Poplar Bluff.

Today was the final slog home and we arrived at about dark this evening. I know the boys were happy to get out of the car and back at home, both had been well off their game all week and both ate a healthy bowlful tonight!

We got home just in time for another blast of arctic air to come thru over the next two days, but for the short term at least - I'm going nowhere unless I absolutely have to!

I unloaded the car, carried everything in, filled the empty bird feeder and bath and now I'm DONE for the night!

We're supposed to get "wintry mix" tonight, and starting Monday night we're supposed to get rain - every day the rest of the week!

It's only going to be in the low 30's so I hope it doesn't freeze down at night and leave us with ice.

The body shops LOVE this time of year around here!

Oh, and Clancy wrecked a Dodge truck he had borrowed from a friend going home from shop night at Prather racing - he missed the first bambi, but the second one got him. He wasn't hurt, the truck was totaled.
