Title: Squeaky Brakes
Post by: SurfBlueJDM on July 02, 2025, 08:22:31 AM
Hey All,

I have a 1997 JDM Rover Mini, new to me as of Feb.  The brakes are unbelievably squeaky!

The car went straight to a specialist before I brought it home, he rebuilt the rear drums with new shoes.  Said the fronts looked good.

I swapped the front pads just in case after I heard how crazy loud it is.  Rotors looked and felt good with no grooves although I do have a set I could put on if it would help.

I believe the noise is coming from the front.

I've seen shims for sale online but I've never used them before.  Would they help? Is there something else I should try?

My innocenti had a very squicky front right brake.  It was something related to the caliper. Went away went I switched to 4 pot calipers.  The stock caliper might have been sticking I'm guessing.

You can try the shims, or there is a special grease you can buy at any autoparts store, it goes between the back of the pad and the piston in the caliper.....what usually causes the squeal is vibration of the pad....some pads are worse about it. If you've already tried a different compound pad and it still does it, it's probably a sticking caliper

Don't laugh, I had a guy I know who smeared it on the pad's friction surface!

It could also be the backing/dust cover rubbing.
