Title: Layshaft installation problems
Post by: Coalhod on June 06, 2025, 09:53:03 AM
Hello;  Not sure if anyone has had this happen but the layshaft I recently purchased is on a bind when installed about 3/4 the way into the gearbox.  I'm assuming it should turn fairly easily.  Inspection of the old one revealed a ridge where the bearing at the large end of the shaft sits.  The old shaft was on a bind also.  Maybe line bore the case?

Is it the shaft itself, or the laygear you're talking about? If the shaft, are you sure you got the right layshaft? There are a couple different styles.....

I've never had one bind before, and I've done a bunch of these gearboxes of all different years. Highly unlikely that it's the case.....maybe give us some more details about what you're working on? You know, A or A+, rod change or remote, 3 synchro or 4.......that kind of stuff.

Dave thanks!  It's the shaft for an 1128 4 synchro remote gearbox.  I purchased a rebuild kit from MED which had all new bearings and gaskets as well as the layshaft.  When assembled the laygear turns fine.  I put a little grease on the gearbox journals, that helped.  I was mistaken the ridge is on the smaller end of the shaft.  I suppose it's ok the car ran on and off like this for 40 years I would have liked the shaft to turn a little more freely.
