Title: Colortune, or?
Post by: ADRay on March 24, 2025, 07:09:16 AM
Good morning, I'm at the point in my Mini ownership where I need to invest in some sort of home garage tool to be able to dial in my SU HS4. I've seen videos of a Colortune being used, it seems easy and people like them.

Just wondering if anyone uses one, or if there is something better to be had for the purpose. Colortune is around $150, hoping to not exceed $200. Thanks

I've never used one, but it's really only usable for tuning the idle, right? I mean, you can't be running alongside while looking at them as it runs.....

I've always felt that the dyno/rolling road is the only way to get a carb dialed in correctly under all conditions, but an air fuel meter comes pretty close and they don't cost that much. You only have to get the bung welded in the pipe so you have the place to put the sensor.

They're all over the net for about $200

Oh goodness, step out of the stone ages.  I have this exact wideband I put in temporarily in cars to tune with.

Coolness, just ordered one of those!  If you haven't yet already, Andy, when it arrives we can play with it together.

What do you do with the 02 sensor, Dan?  I bought a bracket thing for attaching it inside the tailpipe, hoping that will work.

Weld a bung in just past the Y collector.

I put mine just behind the rod change box. You'll find when you're under the car there isn't a lot of space or options to put the bung.
I believe Dan advised me to have the sensor at about 10 o'clock.

Yeah you can angle it up slightly.

Pat let me borrow his wide band air/fuel mix tool and quickly found that the main problem is an air leak. Tool worked great.

Good to hear.  I have quickly discovered a pesky vacuum hose that pops off my VW immediately just by noting the readings while I drive.
