Title: So what does Supreme Court ruling mean for Oklahoma?
Post by: BruceK on July 11, 2020, 10:44:01 AM
I'm trying to understand what the Supreme Court ruling means for Oklahoma.  Since Dan is on the ground there perhaps he can help explain?  Or are we at the "early days" stage where no one really knows what the consequences are?

This is the gist of the ruling:
"Supreme Court has ruled eastern Oklahoma is Native land"

Here is a google search results with several articles about it:

I have no idea myself.

Since Tulsa is included in the affected land I figured it would be the only topic of conversation for residents there.  I heard that there would be many criminal convictions overturned if the criminal was a Native American since Oklahoma state law would no longer apply.  In other words: mass freeing of convicts.  Wonder if that is true.

I didn't even know it was a thing till about a day ago.  I'd like to think common sense will prevail and they'll keep hardened criminals behind bars.

Are not Native Americans also American citizens and subject to American laws?  Do they pay taxes, use currency and participate in the American economy?  Register vehicles  and buy property?  Collect welfare checks and food stamps?  Go to schools and hospitals?

If they do the crime, they do the time.

I continually find it odd that these indigenous so-called 'nations' use American currency, sap federally funded social and welfare benefits, education, carry American passports, vote in American elections, etc., yet claim 'sovereignty' when it's convenient.

If integration isn't likely, they should be cut off.  See how that works out...

This article touches on some of the criminal issues raised.  The case was brought the supreme court about a kindly old Indian gentleman who had been convicted of raping a little 4 year old girl.  He didn't believe Oklahoma state should have had the authority to convict him.

I wonder if local speed limits could be different depending upon whether someone is 'tribal' or not...
