Title: Engine Removal
Post by: Spitz on June 11, 2018, 07:05:47 PM
It's been a while, so someone please remind me.....

I' m pulling the engine this week in my MkIV as my diff blew up.
Can I split the gearbox and engine without removing flywheel?

No, you must remove the flywheel in order to get to the bolts of the case that covers the drop gears.

If it sticks, give it some healthy whacks with a hammer in various spots.  It will eventually break free.

Engine is almost out...just need to drop the exhaust, punch the rod shift pin.....voila   ( now where did I put that 3/16 punch?!!  damn it )

That's exactly what I expected Dan to find in his transmission when he tore it down - broken spider gears. We put a cross pin diff in his, if you don't want to do that (tho you really should) then MED make a super cross pin for the standard spider gears that will not break or wear out. Dan had part of the internal shift linkage come apart and jam in his diff gears, breaking the case.

MiniSpares also has uprated diff pins, as well as this nifty kit:

C-BTA167 (http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Gearbox/Diffs/C-BTA167.aspx?1503&ReturnUrl=/product/Classic/Gearbox/Diffs/Diff_Parts/C-BTA164.aspx%7CBack%20to)

Otherwise,

C-BTA166 (http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Gearbox/Diffs/Diff_Parts/C-BTA166.aspx?150303&ReturnUrl=/shop/classic/Gearbox/Diffs/Diff~Parts.aspx%7CBack%20to%20shop)

or

C-BTA164 (http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Gearbox/Diffs/Diff_Parts/C-BTA164.aspx?150303&ReturnUrl=/shop/classic/Gearbox/Diffs/Diff~Parts.aspx%7CBack%20to%20shop) - but read the description, as the moly coated pin can't be combined with the pre-bushed C-BTA167 (http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Gearbox/Diffs/Diff_Parts/DAM6624BUSHED.aspx?150303&ReturnUrl=/product/Classic/Gearbox/Diffs/C-BTA167.aspx%7CBack%20to) planet wheels.

The BEST answer is the cross pin diff.....

Yep - I've got one sitting in a box, for 'one day'...
