Title: Grumpy man rant
Post by: BruceK on March 16, 2018, 10:46:38 AM
What is wrong with some people?   They keep saying "It's going to be" instead of the much clearer "It's".    WTF ?!   "It's going to be $5.63".    "It's going to be the blue house after the white one".    It's not like they are talking about the future – they are not saying it's going to be cloudy tomorrow.   They are talking in the present   But they somehow have developed some sort of speech affliction of having to say the phrase "it's going to be...." before stating a fact.

If it is now Monday and I tell you about a meeting "next Wednesday", how far away is that to you?

Because if you somehow think it is two days away (i.e. the next Wednesday to be encountered on a sequence as time flows) rather than specifically the Wednesday of next week, then you might be an idiot.

It shouldn't have to be spelled out, but to be clear:

next Wednesday = next week

this Wednesday = this week

Argh!!

I have a rant:

So I'm in line check airman ground school (best of the best).  Day 1 I wear jeans and sneakers with a nice button up shirt. Everyone else, all 4 of them, are wearing nicer clothes. The instructor text me last night to wear slacks.  I don't have any with me, cause I was pulled mid trip to do this, so I'm in my uniform today. This morning come down all dressed up and everyone else is wearing jeans. One dude in a plain white t shirt. Love it.

I'm pretty sure you'll see another text tonight... he'll probably be asking you for a date dressed like that!  Ha!

Reminds me of that Clint Eastwood movie where he was the DI, each day if the grunts didn't wear the same T-Shirt as him they had to go without on that days exercise runs.......

Dave, I lived it - went through officer candidate school and we were always 'wrong'.  Tons o'fun...

As for the 'grumpy' issue concerning non-committal (spineless/soft) and nebulous speech, and as a now more or less a spectator to my beloved American culture, I see many linguistic anomalies and 'perverse' trends regarding speech and language.  New, made-up (nonsense) pronouns removing 'he' 'she' or 'it', prohibitions on common words; words containing the word 'man' or 'men' in favor of fabricated terms incorporating 'person' or 'human' really distress me.  The so-called 'white privilege' crap, and where 'mankind' becomes 'human kind' or 'person kind' - yeah, I'm grumpy, sour, intolerant and mean.

So, today is the first day of Daylight Saving Time and I'm hearing all the usual complaints that pop up every time each year when it launches: Daylight Saving Time messes with people's life balance. It is soooo hard it is to adjust to! People lose a whole hour of sleep!  It causes increased heart attacks!  It causes more traffic accidents until people adjust to it!  Blah, blah, blah.

Whether or not you agree with the idea of government-mandated DST, it happens and I've got some questions: just how ^&#@$ delicate are these a-holes that can't adjust to it?   Are their personal schedules so highly regimented, so unchanging and steadfast that a mere one hour time shift throws their little worlds upside down?  Have they never ever traveled to a different time zone and had to adjust? (Heaven forbid cross-country or international travel with multiple time zone changes!! The Horror!!!!)  Have they never had their work schedules change?  Do they keep the same personal schedule on weekends and vacations so as to not disrupt any delicate balance?!

Nope, it's just the state of the nation.  Don't do anything. Don't take responsibility. Whine, really really loud and on every platform you can.  The nation has become a state of whiners. I just don't listen anymore. Or laugh and roll on.

I wake up every morning at 5:50 to head out and go for a 2-3 mile walk before we start our day.

I am not looking forward to tomorrow, it will feel like 4:50, and 5:50 already sucks enough.

If you are waking up at 7 or 8 to go to work at 8 or 9 then you have no right to complain.

Waking up in the 4:00 hour of the morning just plain sucks and yes my delicate little ass will take all week to adjust to this.

Then again, I typically only sleep about 4-6 hours a night, because I am delicate.

Yea they should move it back a day cause you don't lose the sleep Saturday night, you lose it Sunday cause you end up going to bed late. Or move to AZ.

Im not a fan of it why not move it a half hour and leave it whats a half hour?

As for the whiner's yea whatever so go to bed an hour early does it suck sure but still if you had to get up an hour early for something you really wanted to do you would so stfu and get over it.

I am honestly so busy and use my phone for an alarm it updates itself that I seriously didn't even notice a thing just another day. I realized it when the clocks at the shop were off. I was like oh yeah that happened that's stupid.

Yes, but now it is light out later and I found myself out in the yard taking care of things until dark.  I did not eat dinner until 8PM last night.  Forced myself to hit the bed at 11 pm.

Happy to report I am already adjusted, I woke up before the 5:50 alarm this morning.

I wish we could follow Arizona and just not change the time. I saw lets leave it where it is now.  I like lighter evenings.

When some clerk wants your phone number for business reasons, why the fu*k do they say "Can I get a good phone number?"

Good?

It's not like I'm some hot girl at a club passing out fake phone numbers to sleazy guys hitting on me.

Sure.....913-867-5309, good anytime!

Tommy Tutone says so!   ;D ;D ;D

Funny thing is, no one ever says "no, you can't have my phone number", they just give it to them.....we're so conditioned.

My brake lights quit working today.  Fortunately Michael was following behind me and noticed when the brakes lights suddenly stopped lighting up.

This evening I traced the problem to the brake switch itself.  So I figured I'd order a replacement one and also a second one to have in my parts inventory.  I usually don't buy anything from the US Mini parts places, but I decided to try MiniMania because I didn't have a need for more stuff at this time. (I.e. no need to place a big order from one of the UK suppliers).

MiniMania had the switches priced at $5.30 each. Cool.  Fair price.  So I place an order for two - that's $10.60 worth of parts.

But MM, lovely place that it is, tacked on some additional charges.  Seriously?   Not only $10.55 for slow-ass  8 business day shipping, but a bogus $5.00 for "handling", and an even more bogus $0.40 for "surcharge - import freight cost".

I realize I'm spoiled with Amazon and the overnight  "free shipping", but MM's shipping/handling/surcharges are ridiculous.  I'll be lucky if this shows up within three weeks after I've paid 150% more than the item's cost just to get them to me.

I haven't ordered anything from the "local" Mini parts suppliers in a while, but Mania would be at the absolute bottom of the list if I did.....

I use 7Enterprises, British Parts Northwest (great bunch of guys who seem to know their LBC's) and Moss now for US based stuff.

Is it just me or do new car salesmen never seem to actually want you sell you a car?

My wife is wanting a new car, and she likes the Acura MDX.  At Cars and Coffee in SA on Saturday, the local Acura dealership was there with an MDX and I stopped by ask them about availability the current pricing etc etc.  The guy could not have been less interested in talking to me, he just kept saying words to the effect of "the model is exclusive and we are selling above MSRP right now, so have you factored that in?" and then added something about "our finance team have strict requirements".  Not once did he ask me what we were looking for in a car, why we like the MDX, what would be the best trim level for us etc.

I thought the BMW dealership were a-holes, but this guy was worse!

They're under immense pressure these days, they have nothing to sell and have been forced by the ownership to maximize every penny - which means "additional dealer markup", all sorts of added on things like Truecoat, undercoat, special floor mats, vinv etching and who knows what plus they almost insist that you finance thru them so they can get the back end too. Trying to pay cash right now is difficult to impossible.....if they have the no penalties for early payoff you can always arrange your own financing, then just go pay it off after the deal is closed.

I would NOT want to be a car salesman right now (I did it for almost 30 years) nor would I want to be in the market for something new. The prices are over the moon and no sign that they'll be coming back down anytime soon. No one has any inventory.....it makes for a very unpleasant way to buy something this expensive......it used to be the highlight of people's lives when they got a new car and proudly parked it in the driveway, now buying one is more like going to war, and you almost feel guilty for being able to buy one in this climate....

This is absolutely no comment on your situation, simply my read on the market right now and why salesmen are in such dire straights. If you wanted a Volvo I can hook you up with a guy in Dallas (Plano?) who will treat you right and be pleasant to talk to .

I understood some of those pressures, but thanks for your insight.

What annoyed me is that he just talked about "exclusive", "expensive" and then said their finance team would have strict requirements.  We did not even talk about the car!  If he wants to up sell, he needs to get me to that point, not just dismiss me out of hand.

More rental car gripes.  I'm a Hertz Gold Member (sounds like an Austin Powers movie :) ) which means I can make a reservation online, completely skip the rental car counter, and just head out to the rental car parking lot and climb into any vehicle within a certain parking area and drive out the gate. So... what is waiting in that Gold Member area?  Why the unwanted toys nobody likes.  Electric cars.  Nothing but Chevrolet Bolts, Polestars, Kia Niros, Kia EV5 models. As I walk down the rental parking aisle, every fricken car is an EV.  Who the hell wants to rent an EV try and figure out how that particular car brand's damn thing works?  And then where to get it charged during my trip? And finally how to get it charged so it can returned "full"!?

It is enough of a hassle just to get an unfamiliar gas-powered car and try and figure out all the quirks and features and idiosyncrasies of driving it (I.e. the climate control can only be changed by accessing six menus deep) Who the hell wants to multiply that by adding EV into the mixture?

Finally at the end of one row, I spotted the only reasonable choice still left: one single white rental-grade Chevrolet Malibu. I've never been so happy to have a totally boring rental car before.

We just finished booking flights car hotel etc.. in January we will be heading to Breckenridge to meet up with our friends who have a timeshare booked there.

We are flying in a day early and have a room booked in Denver for the evening so we can check out Denver a little before heading up to the Mountains.

I wanted a SUV with AWD, I looked on Hertz and was hard pressed to find one, the funny part is the EV's are much cheaper to rent, I am not interested, after owning one for 5 years, I am over them and not interested in all the BS associated with them. They are perfect if you want an in town commuter car, on a vacation?  Nope! I do not want to be bothered trying to find somewhere to charge it, dealing with the rental company and charge fees etx.. This is one of those moments where I want simplicity.  So we paid extra for a Mid size AWD SUV. Like $40 a day extra.

Fall in FloRida is different than most places, instead of the leaves changing the license plates do.

3 weeks ago it was delightful here, the roads were quiet, people are mostly polite on the road.

2 Weeks ago it started.  The license plates started changing, this past week?  Bedlam!

Our quite little area is now a madhouse, most of the drivers on the road are raging assholes who will go out of their way to fuck with you.

2 incidents today alone, probably over a dozen actually but these 2 were gems.

A person in a Tesla, doing exactly the speed limit, no problem I was fine with that it is the speed limit after all.

The problem was when the road went from a no passing 2 way road and opened up to a divided 4 lane road, suddenly the Tesla, which had about 6 cars piled up behind it, could do 10-15 over the speed limit fucking with everyone behind it trying to get around it. The speed limit was the same the Tesla just decided it would take off once you could pass it.

The second was this old man with a handicap placard on his mirror in a Mini van, I was behind him at a red light ready to turn left. The light goes green he is asleep, I do not honk, I just wait for him to wake up, then he proceeds to take off very very slowly, to the point the light is now turning red. I move over a lane on the next road to go around him.... a large puff of black smoke explodes from his exhaust, he had floored it in order for me not to pass him.  Why?

I have an in car cam that I need to put a memory card back in. I am going to start video compilations I think of these assholes.

I should also add, I start to hesitate to take the nice cars out this time of year especially the E30 and the Mini.  These old people also bounce off of each other all the time on the roads here.  It seems we get the absolute worst drivers from all over North America this time of year. This lasts until April too.

Grumpy man rant for the week.  I've been redoing the one rental condo for myself to move back into, and the other smaller condo will be rented.  I've been replacing older furniture and giving the place a few Dan face-lifts.  I gave the 55 inch TV in there to the barista girl at the coffee shop I'm a regular at.  I figured the 0.25 cent daily discount earned her a TV.  I decided to replace it with a 75 inch TV.  Which is larger than you realize.  I drive down to best buy with my pickup truck to get this thing and the young dude rolls it out and asks how I'm going to take it home.  Obviously this pickup truck you're about to load it in.  He says well you can't lay it down flat because it will break so you need to stand it upright and use straps. Do you have straps?  Also good luck replacing it if it breaks on the drive home.  Have a good day sir, and he walks away.  Left me there with this big fucking thing and my straps are in my trailer at the shop. Thanks for the customer service and help.  Maybe grab some rope for me?  Well, I ended up strategically strapping it down with jumper cables to make the drive slowly down the road to the home depot to get proper straps.  Luckily no one stole it while I ran into home depot.

Rant for the day. Up early in Anchorage Alaska to enjoy a cup of coffee over breakfast.  Father son duo next to me have been placing calls to all their friends and family to get the band back together, but on speaker phone.  Why do people insist on using speaker phone in public to either make calls or listen to some loud obnoxious video.

We just replaced our 8 y/o Sony, but Best Buy not only delivers it for free but also takes the old one away. I'm "restricted" to a 65 by the bride who insists even that is too big but "lets" me have it.

I noticed when they delivered it that it was lying flat in the truck, so I made them take it out of the box and power it up to see there were no cracks or other damage. He said they haul them like that all the time....I always thought you couldn't lay them flat......

Don just bought a TCL too, he loves it.

See that's funny because that 75 inch I bought earlier in the year they made me haul it out standing up in the box.  Good idea to open it up before they left.
Title: Re: Grumpy man rant
Post by: MiniDave on October 02, 2025, 01:09:05 PM
Yeah, when the truck pulled up they slid it to the back so they could unload it and I told Rose "Uh oh, you're not supposed to lay those flat like that"

At any rate, the packing was fairly impressive (they tell you you have to keep the box for 30 days - I guess there's a 30 day return policy) then stood it back up and lifted the cover straight up, then while still sitting in the packaging they hooked it up and hit the "go" button. It lit right up....

They then took it out of the packing and put the legs on it and tipped it onto the legs, Rose spent the afternoon fiddling with the programming, apps and general look of the display and getting all our remotes to work.

So for the grumpy old man part of the story - why the hell do you need a degree in computer science to get your damn TV to work now?!?!?!

We have it set up on wifi, we have Netflix and Prime and a bunch of other apps, we also have OTA programs, which used to have an outside antenna, now it's  built in....once you get it set to OTA, you have to tell it to scan for channels, then you have to go thru those (we have 56!) and eliminate the ones you never want to watch (all religion all the time for example).

You also have to decide which programming guide you prefer - and of course there's a different one for OTA stations......we also have "universal" remotes that talk to the Google fiber device and to the TV, and we also have it set up to bluetooth to our phones and other devices. Sheesh!

Title: Re: Grumpy man rant
Post by: MiniDave on October 02, 2025, 05:26:21 PM
Yes, all the apps were in there, but we had to sign in to Prime and Netflix again, then do the channels for the OTA, then connect the remotes, wifi and blutooth......she likes messing with that stuff so she did it all while I was gone.
