hello I'm new here
my mini is a 1984/85 rhd Mayfair
I call it a 84/85 because it was built in Nov 84, but first reg in feb 85 in England, my car is a B reg mini
I paid 500 GBP@1.3 exchange rate for my car in March of 2009, from a farm off of the A140 closer to Norwich, I found the mini off of the uk ebay and took the afternoon off from work and me and my family drove up to the farm and looked at the car and I fall in love with it
and I went to a local atm and pulled the pounds out, someone else had shown up and was looking at
my car, but they didn't have any pounds on them and they were trying to talk the person down in price
and I showed back up and dropped 500 pounds on the seller and was ready to roll
he gave me all the extra parts he had for minis and I loaded them up in the back of our Chrysler van and hit the road for the 1st gas station,
the fuel gauge didn't work and I ended up having 3/4 of a tank and filled it up anyways and drove the car home, we were living in Red Lodge at the time
the car started out as a 998/automatic and the gearbox was slipping going into 3rd with any type of throttle load
I worked on that car from March to Oct that year before I could get it to pass MOT, loads of rust and many panels replaced
every pay day I would buy parts from Coopers garage in Mildenhall and or make the 45 min drive up to DSN classic
1st was body panel work and then I de-seamed the car because I wanted smooth lines on my car

Welcome! Interesting story so far - can't wait to learn more about you and your Mini.
Oct 2009 I got the car to pass MOT and I started to daily drive it
right before Halloween, the diff went out and I had no movement from the car
I could hear the diff just grinding with any load
so I found a Austin metro, a 81 or 82 something like that with 35K miles on it
and picked up the car for 300 GBP
and pulled the motor out, it was a 1275 automatic

and I junk yard the rest of the car right before Christmas 2009
most of 2010 I was gone away from home due to work
the end of 2010 I was able to buy a roll cage for the car
and I made the sandwich plates for the cage myself

I went to the show in San Diego, I took my lhd car but it ended up blowing a head gasket on the way so that sucked, so I left the car in SD at my parents house
and a few months later came back and did the head gasket on it
but the car is still in SD now, I haven't drove it back or towed it back yet

1995 Honda del slow si, d16z6 automatic
I got this car in june from a dealer auction for $275
I drove the car for a few months to make sure everything was good
I changed the battery, fuse box, oil change, 02 sensor and it passed the smog test no problems
the car has 202k miles on it
I ordered a new oem timing belt, water pump kit
not knowing the history of the car,
I had one of my buddies look up the vin history
because I didn't want to pay the $45 bucks or whatever it costs
I changed out the water pump/belt and I was thinking to myself, no way this motor has 202k miles

Nov 24th, 2017
my new throttle cable came in from rockauto
stock del slow lhd cable is 38 inches long, and wont work for rhd
1995 Honda odyssey has a f22 engine and the cable is 53 inches long
its just right for rhd but the bracket is in a different spot
so I have to add in about 2.5-3 inches of metal to make it bolt up to the intake
super simple for me to do but my hips and lower back hurt right now
so I have to wait
but looking online for a rhd throttle cable here in the states, it runs $50 or so plus the ride,
I found this cable for $20 and the ride from rockauto
I had double hip surgery, 1st one being in Feb 2016 and the 2nd one being Sept 2016
and I still have hip pain,
I torn the labrums in my hips when I was in Africa 2013
and now I have a bulging disc in l3-l4 and arthritis at l5-s1
so I'm trying to hurry with my automatic swap
because I know at some point I will have to give up turning wrenches and metal fab work
at some point I hope for 15-20 years from now I will need double thr's
I'm 36 years old right now and I'm in the process of medically retiring from my job
and I plan to become a stay at home dad
I got a 20 pin cannon plug for the front clip wiring, before I used those gm style weather proof connectors for the front clip wiring but I didn't really care for them
and wanted a cannon plug but didn't have the money back in 2013 to buy one
but I got it now, I used 18 pins out of the 20
much happier with the wiring for the front clip now
this car will have cruise control in it, its already installed and wired up, I'm using the factory Honda cruise control set up
I still need to wire up the rear tail lights, fuel pump, fuel level sender
and I need to hook up the automatic cooler that I'm getting from my brother next week
make adapter fuel lines to connect into the -6 AN steel braided lines that are already in the car
finish installing the main battery cable to the boot and make a battery mount
build the exhaust system altogether

joakwin, welcome to the forum - I'm the one from TMF that sent you here - glad to see you on the forum!
oh ok, I saw it and I've been on and off looking for a mini site with people from the states
building a mini here in the states is different then building a mini in the UK
I think mini's here take a lot more planning and time,
2hours to run up to dsn classic, because I would spend 30 mins talking to the owner about mini's
and what new billet parts they have in the works, 2 hours is not a big deal, still have time to go home and install the new part
here in the states, I call up 7ent and order the parts and talk to them for a few mins and wait 2 days or so
my buddy finally sent me the info on the vin history, took him about 6 weeks but I got it for free
the owner of the del slow before me, had the motor and trans replaced at 185K miles from the Honda dealer
my drivetrain has 17k miles on it
the car had a fuse block problem,
so I think the owner was done with putting money into a old car
and traded it in to the Honda dealer for a new car
I got lucky because I have a neighbor that car go to the dealer only car auctions
and he hooked me up with the car for his price and no mark up
I gave him some 45 pound weight plates I had
with bad hips and lower back, my weight lifting days are over
I used the weights to set the coilover ride height, I put my bodies weight into the drivers seat
my goal is to do my 1st testing, turning over the engine from the Honda key switch 1st week of December
I want to put oil in the trans before turning it over
and my goal is to have the car running by the end of December
basically a 4 month home built vtec automatic swap

the motor ran super clean
That's really cool that you got a fresh motor for that little money!
I'm also considering an automatic swap, mines a bit further down the road tho.

I made the bracket from scratch, it was less work then trying to mod the old one

is it Jon Small or Barney Rael?
ive never seen an automatic vtec mini in a regular round front clip, ive only seen them in clubman front clips, because the size of the auto box,
don't mean that it cant be done
my d16z6 auto set up sits 2 inches outward vs the manual d16z6 set up I had in the car before
the only way to get those 2 inches back would have been to cut the tower on the right side, and build a custom upper arm and move the steering rack 2inches into the shell, but that brings other problems, but I hear its not as bad if a person where to put metro steering arms onto their car and get the mini sport quick rack
maybe just maybe with a lhd steering rack, the rack would clear but I have never really looked at a lhd mini rack and I haven't tried yet to fit a Honda automatic to a round front clip mini
but the Honda automatic does have nice gearing for the smaller mini tires
my manual gearbox had a 3.7 fd from a vx or cx Honda civic, what ever came in the 96 and up civic's is where I got it from
Wilson built a d16 automatic estate wagon for his wife a few years back and he did tell me that it drove nice, and the gearing of the FD was good, he said it was a nice daily driver, his b18 mini was a hand full and was fun but the estate from way nicer to daily drive
Wilson's two vtec mini's where in mini mag a few years back
I want to say sometime around 2012 or 2013
what really sold me on the d series Honda motors was Alvis, he told me that a stock d16 is 125-130hp, the cost to get a A series motor to that power and to keep it from falling apart was night and day
makes a lot of sense to me because those Honda motors run forever and parts are super cheap, and the cost of A series motors in the states are more then double then what they are in the UK
Right on all counts.....I have a friend with a D series in a Pup, perfect balance of power and reliability and works fine with the 10" wheels.
Save some coin and buy parts from the UK. My minispares stuff is usually here on Thursday if I order by Monday night. Way less spending than 7.
Love the minis and all the history. 77.gif
I made the wiring harness to connect the tail lights
and I found the pin outs for the mk2 tail lights, and will connect the tails this upcoming weekend
I still need to ext the wiring harness for the fuel pump and fuel level sender, that will get done on Saturday
I plan to mod the mini fuel tank to put the Honda fuel level sender in it, so that I don't have to buy the convertor for the different ohms between the Honda gauge and mini fuel level sender
plus I have to mod the fuel tank for a bar that I have going across the car for the coilovers, so I'm going to make the tank a hair bigger
not much going on the last few days
I had a doctors appointment for my hips in San Diego, so I went out last Tuesday and got back Thursday
my brother gave me a huge trans cooler,
I have to get some rubber hose for it and make mounts
but I don't really feel like being in a car right now
just drove 425 miles and got stuck in traffic this morning in San Diego for a hour
but I may still go out their and finish wiring the tail lights
That's how they get done, a little bit at a time......

Crikeys, that's WAY bigger than it needs - that's big enough for a full size pickup or a Suburban or something! I thought that was your A/C condenser till I read your comment.....

my brother runs big block Chevy engines, ie 427's and 454's
and I figure a big cooler will be good in summer time here, 115 plus temp here

here's the other side of the tank, I cut the pocket out of the tank to fit it into my shell because of the roll cage bars that I have in the boot, that go to the top of my coil over mounts
my coil over mounts tie into my roll cage, I didn't want to have the weight of the car on just the inner fender wells, seam like the metal would get work harden and rip the thin sheet metal over time
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4547/27036178759_9009a7f7eb.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/Hc6u26)roll cage boot (https://flic.kr/p/Hc6u26) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
so since I cut that pocket out of the tank, I wanted to add some volume back, so I added the part on the bottom and I ext the filler neck on the tank by 2 inches
my goal is to figure out how to mount the Honda fuel lever sender guts onto the plate that goes into the mini tank
and I have to ext the pickup of the fuel pump to the new bottom of the tank

Honda fuel level sender with mini seal and lock ring
and still have room to drop the pump inside the tank
drivetrain now has coolant, trans oil, engine oil in it
I have to wire up the rear plate lights and fog light and figure out what switch I'm going to use for the fog light
02 sensor install, plus make the rear half of the exhaust
brake lines all around, install calipers
fuel lines, install fuel tank, ext fuel pump pick up tube, ext fuel pump and fuel level wiring
finish building the positive battery cable, build battery mount, install battery ground cable
the list is getting short, to having the car running
but I still need to do the interior work, but I want to hear it run before anything inside happens
Be sure to make a vid for us of it when you get it running!
a video for sure
this weekend I plan to work on the exhaust
and I also have to change struts and axles on my daily 2011 Honda pilot sometime this weekend
and change oil on my wife's Honda element
tomorrow I have to pick up the new strut mounts, they had to order them in from Phx
and I want to pick up the metal to build a battery box,
I want to build a jig for the stock mini subframe, because a friend in texas wants me to build him a tube subframe for a d series Honda drivetrain in a round nose front clip
I'm probably going to build the jig out of 2x3 3/16 wall
but I'm thinking the jig is going to be more of a new years build
but I want to buy the metal in the next few days
I have the fuel lines ran from the tank up to the firewall area now
tank is installed
I had to mod one of the corners, to make it clear the floor better on the back side of it
I ext the fuel pump pickup tubes inside the tank so now that goes to the bottom
I'm almost to the point that I can wire up the fuel pump and fuel level, my goal is to get to that today
the fuel filter is mounted, and I'm also looking at mounting the stock purge emission stuff, I have a line ran from the tank for the canister
came inside for lunch

purge canister has been installed and all the lines have been ran to the fuel tank and the intake manifold, the system was already on the del sol being a 95, so I'm keeping it, so the car will run like it did in the del slow chassis

fuel tank sitting in place, I haven't bolted it in yet, I have to build a new strap for the tank
but I'm thinking I'm going to build something off of the roll cage cross over tube
You're making remarkable progress, can't wait to see a vid of you driving it!
yeah its getting close
I need to make a what needs to be done list
the drivetrain turned over from the key switch today
I need to wire up the fuel pump and fuel level
and put some fuel in the tank
and it will start no problem
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4727/27190042959_4e38db191d.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/HqG5u8)video-1512936770 (https://flic.kr/p/HqG5u8) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
auto drivetrain started today
I got a fuel leak and a vacuum leak
the vacuum leak will be simple to fix
the fuel leak is going to be a pain in the rear
I'll get it, I'm not worried but next step is to start building me some exhaust for it ones I get the fuel leak fixed
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4540/38958214542_34a722a8fa.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22mB2Ub)video-1513036286 (https://flic.kr/p/22mB2Ub) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
video of the 1st time I got it running
Cool! Isn't a great feeling when it starts and runs first turn of the key like that?
What was the popping noise?
I think the popping noise was from the low fuel pressure
I only had a few gallons of gas in the tank and the tank had a ton of holes in it, its a older tank, I got the mpi tank used for 30 gbp, and was told it was good, it sat around for close to 7 years or so not being used, but the mini part of the tank leaked like no other, I welded up most of the holes and rust spots and
then I just said F-it
I wasted so much time trying to get the mpi mini tank in shape
but I'm going to cut my lost for now and swap it out for the stock Honda del slow tank
the Honda tank is 11.9 gallons and it worked just fine
I got the fuel level sender back in it and the stock Honda fuel pump installed back into the tank
I just have to do some minor mods and the tank will sit on my boot floor
my boot floor is far from stock and its a few inches deeper
I have to remove the stock outlet line from the del slow, and then the tank will be hooked back up
and I have to remove the stock filler neck from the del slow and some how mod it to work with the mini filler neck and make a mount for
the mini filler neck to bolt to the body of the mini now or make a arm inside to hold the filler neck in-place
I got sick the last few days
so not much work has been going on with the mini
but my goal for this weekend is to drop the Honda tank into the mini and getting the fuel lines hooked up and the filler neck worked out
and have it running again
i got the mini running with the Honda del slow fuel tank
ones I reved it a few times, it started to surge and pop again
and then I put the fuel tank cap on and the surge and popping went away
and the idle came down
I think the stock Honda fuel tank cap is a sealed cap
I have a vented cap on it right now
I have to buy a sealed mini fuel cap
raining today, so no work on the mini
planned on starting the exhaust work today but oh well
it can wait
I have to pull the old exhaust off the del slow
and I don't feel like doing it in the rain
plus I got tickets to see star wars later in the afternoon
hopefully it stops raining and I can pull the exhaust tomorrow
Tell us what you think of the movie - I've been hearing great reviews......
movie was good I like it
didn't rain today but it was super cold and the wind was going off
the engine is starting to idle at normal rpm's now that I've gave it more time for the computer to relearn some stuff and whatnot
I want to get new plug wires for it
ive done cap and rotor and plugs last summer but didn't do the wires for whatever crazy reason
but the wires look pretty bad
I did some tunnel work tonight, some light sheet metal work, I had to fill those monster holes I put in it, and shave the hole I had for the manual shifter
my wife got me sick last week and I'm starting to finally get over it
so its been pretty good timing that its been raining here, I still want to build the exhaust for it
work isn't done for the year yet on the mini but I am running out of time,
but I'm going on a mini holiday for Christmas
we rented a cabin up in the mountains of eastern San Diego
hope to see some snow but who knows
but my goal is to get the exhaust built this week or it wont happen to the weekend of the 29th
I have a nice 4 day weekend coming up
and so I figure with the new year, my next major big project will the brakes
get the lines ran and start coming up with a plan for the Honda rear disc brakes
the del slow is 4x100mm
and the mini is 4x101.6mm
and I want to upgrade the wheel studs to 12mm, aka next size up
I have to ask my buddy Alvis how he went about upgrading his K20 mini to the 12mm studs
what size exhaust is good for a vtec mini?
before with the itb engine I had 2.5 inch all the way from the collector to the tip
I have a long cherry bomb with 2.5 in pipe
I also have a stock twin box rc40 exhaust that's brand new, it has 1-7/8's
stock del slow exhaust pipe is 1-7/8's
i got some autozone exhaust pipe adapters, I'm going to give the cherry bomb muffler a try and see if I like the sound or not
tomorrow I'm going to bolt in the cat and start fitting the muffler to the car
also looking in a box, I found a non-vented fuel cap with a pair of keys, the chrome on the cap is a bit faded, but I plan to paint it anyways
I was about to buy another cap, looking for some other part in one of the many plastic bins I took back from the UK a few years ago
and bam, fuel cap, saved me a few bucks
forgot what I was looking for but whatever.....
Boy howdy I know that one, go looking for something and find something else, then I can't remember what I was looking for in the first place! ;D
It's hell getting older, avoid it if at all possible..... ::)
My buddy with the Vtec Pup tried all manor of mufflers and cherry bombs, no matter what he did it still sounded like a Honda. I think in the case of an automatic, quiet would be a good goal.
I would actually recommend going with the RC40 twin box for a couple of reasons.
a) It is the same diameter as the original Honda system for that engine, so will be a closer match to the pressure constraints the engine was originally tuned/designed for.
b) As Dave suggests, it will be quieter and less likely to sound like a tweaked Honda.
before with the itb motor with 2.5 in pipe, and just the cherry bomb at the end, idle sounded good but any rpm after that was way to ricey, and loud
so I flipped the cherry bomb and stuck it in the middle under the shifter area, and then stuck a 40 series flow master I had laying around at the rear under the boot floor
and the idle was the same and the higher rpm's weren't as loud and it didn't sound as ricey
I don't want the rice sound where its super loud and super deep inside the shell,
the stock twin box exhaust no longer fits my car as the boot floor is so much more deeper
i'd hate to cut up a brand new twin box rc40 and it not work out for me
I'm going to try the cherry bomb with exit in front of the rear wheel
and if that don't cut it, I will cut up the rc40 and run a single muffler from it and have it exit out the side in front of the wheel
whats nice is that I can keep on trying different exhaust set up's until I'm happy with it
I worked on the exhaust today
I moved the cat about a foot back from its stock location, from the stock y-pipe to the cat I added in some 2 inch pipe
and then between the cat and the cherry bomb I have 3 inches of 1-7/8 pipe with a step up from 1-7/8's to 2.25
the cherry bomb has 2.5 inlet/outlet
so the 2.25 pipe fit inside of the 2.5
the outlet goes 2.5 to 2.25 to 1-7/8's
the cherry bomb is located under the rear seat area in the tunnel
I'm thinking about making the exhaust go out the right rear behind the wheel
looks like my plan is changing as I'm building the exhaust for the car
but so far I'm loving the way sound of the exhaust
this weekend I plan on building the rear exhaust hanger mount thingy
picked up metal today for this small project
I plan to lift the rear of the car up so that I can fit under the car better
I'm thinking about building a diy sheet metal bender so that I can bend the metal for my dash
It's not too hard, but if you're only going to bend a couple of pieces, two big pieces of angle iron and a couple of c-clamps will do the job just fine.
I ended up making the exhaust go all the way to the back and come out the rear like stock
I used 2 inch pipe and the motor isn't loud at idle at all
the mount is half way done, i'll finish it tomorrow
I figured out my misfire and now the engine runs so much smoother and revs good
ones I get exhaust done, my next big pain will be the brakes
Honda ran two lines to the back for brake lines
I welded my exhaust mount on today
and then I started to bend my sheet metal dash, it still has a ton of work to go but its started
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4737/38731594764_686317a07d.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/221zxJC)sheet metal dash (https://flic.kr/p/221zxJC) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
exhaust is mounted to the car, I left the pipe coming out the rear extra long so that I can figure out how I want to cut it
I plan on upgrading to 7/16 studs up front, I have some 13x5 minilite wheels that need a special lug nut, and they are way cheaper
to buy in 7/16's vs the 3/8's the mini uses
I was looking at some 13x5 trailer wheels before but I found out they are made for 1/2 inch wheel studs and that's way to big of a stud to fit on the mini
my buddy fit 12mm studs onto his k20 mini, so the 7/16's shouldn't be a problem, since they are a hair smaller
You're making great progress.............soon as it warms up here I can get back into the shop and finish Stan's car too....but it's just been too damn cold.

ive slowed down a lot in my progress, hips and lower back did not like the up and down measuring the exhaust pipe and the on and off of the exhaust pipe system
but when I cant work, I'm laying out watching tv and surfing the web, pre-planning the next step I want to get done on the car
when I was younger cold weather didn't stop me, I have some extreme cold weather carhartt's and I would just jump in those suckers and be good to go,
now, anything under 60 deg and my hips are like nope, time to Netflix and chill
a few days ago I ordered a 3inch 45 deg hose for my intake tube, ordered it off of amazon
and then intake tube and filter from autozone, mod the intake tube a bit
I plan on putting a small filter on the valve cover

Yeah, I've got a bum knee, but I don't have any excuse except being older than dirt......you're fortunate that you live in a place where the cold is not an every day thing in the winter like here.....although it did get up to 50 today. Day after tomorrow it will be hard pressed to break 20* again......
But I can't do the heat you get there in the summer either.......I'm just a wuss anymore I guess......
I"m late to the game on this... welcome to the forum and I had to mention that I'm familiar with the Norwich/Mildenhall area as that is well I grew up. In fact I was just there this past summer. Your mini looks good with wonderful progress. The guys are this site are definitely knowledgeable and great people. I am certainly interested in following your thread.

thanks
if I went back to Norwich/Mildenhall area, I would come back with so much mini parts, Dsn classic is in that area
and coopers garage is in Mildenhall Village, they have so much mini parts, and the owner of that shop (Steve) he has built a few cars that have been in the mini mags over the years, when I left 3 years ago, he was building a air plane themed twin charged mini roadster
Lone star mini, ive looked over your build a few times, I haven't looked over to many projects on this site, but yours is one of the few that I have
I hope to have my car done soon, I'm trying to push myself, my wife kind of wanted me to have it done to take to a huge car show in Yuma, AZ that's the 1st weekend of March, but I don't think it will be done, it will be running and drivable but I want to repaint the car but as always, I haven't figured out what color I want to go with this time around
the current color has been on the car for a little over 4 years, going on 5 years
I hear you on the color choice.....I've been trying to figure out what color to paint my project car too - I want something bright but not red, orange yellow or purple.
Dave, may I suggest you look at your avatar? Or maybe a vibrant shade of teal, not girly shade, but in your face shade if that's possible.
That was one of the choices I was considering, actually......
I just know that I don't want my car to look like every other classic mini
exactly.
The volcano orange sure does look good in my opinion. My first mini needs to be common or classic, but then I can see how you guys look for something bold and unique
I waited to long in the week to order parts and I didn't feel like paying extra for shipping
but I ordered 7/16 wheel studs and lug nuts to fit my minilite wheels and the 7/16 studs
10 studs and 8 lug nuts, before I waste to much money, I'm going to try it out to make sure its good
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4660/39622051981_6246ae018c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/23ngnDg)minilite wheel (https://flic.kr/p/23ngnDg) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
13x5.5 wheels, I got them for super cheap back in the day, and then had them powder coated white
and then I found out about the price of lug nuts for this style of wheel and just put them away
but now since I'm upgrading to a 7/16 stud, lug nuts are a friction of the price
I'm going to paint the wheels black, not sure if I'm going to do satin or gloss yet
I plan to run a 165/60/13 tire on those wheels
I do need to look into caps for them but for now that can wait

the lhd black mini is kind of stock......it has a 998 in it for now, stock rear suspension with minitastic fast road coil conversion kit with hi-los, and gaz drop shocks,
up front it has minitastic race coil conversion kit with hi-los and gaz drop shocks and on-car adjustable lower control arms, and longer steering end links, and the upgraded lower control arm tie rod with poly bushings and the taller poly bushing that goes under the upper control arm
and a stage 1 kit, and upgraded ign kit in the dizzy
if I remember right it has a britpart ign kit
https://www.britpart.com/all-parts/etc5835k/
I did some searching and found some land rover place with the kit for like 15 GBP
been on the car for probably 6-7 years now,
its a way lower price kit then what they sell for the minis
car looks ruff around the edges but the suspension is good on it, I would like to drop a geo metro 3 banger into it someday just because I can and that motor is like half the way of the stock A-lump and I should be able to get the car to around 1200lbs or so, should be good for a nice street daily beater
The 165/60/13 tires "may" be close to rubbing on the rear.
I have 175/50-13's on my car without rubbing.........
The 175/50/13 tires have a 19.889" rolling diameter.
The 165/60/13 tires have a 20.795" rolling diameter.
The distance from the center of the rear hub to the edge of the swing arm mount is about 10-3/8" to 10-1/2" (10.375 to 10.500). That is the limiting distance. 1/2 the rolling diameter has to be slightly less than the hub-to-mount distance. That puts the 165 tires very close at 10.3975" (either just rubbing or barely clearing).
You math whiz you!

with a stock rear subframe?
the mini tec rear beam, where the arms mount to the beam itself, they don't stick out like the stock arms do on a stock subframe
and the arms are offset
they are basically tucked inside the beam

when I 1st started to fit my absmotorsports fiberglass clubby clip.... I remember the driver didn't have the correct paperwork to get into my neighborhood, so they had to drop the package off at the gate
I had this monster box on the roof of my Nissan micra to get it home, the box was almost as big as my car
I called that car the "red rocket"
twin cam 1 liter/5speed, got 45mpg on the highway, was a fun car to drive around the city but didn't have much top end power
It had a cg10de motor
someday I plan to import a micra to the states, 1st year made in the K11 body style was 1992

Yes, on a stock Mini rear subframe.
Seeing those pictures of the MiniTec rear frame makes several things I had wondered about become clear. One of which was how they got the rear wheels so far out to match their front frames.
Their frame does allow for more clearance. It still has a similar limiting factor, but significantly greater than the factory subframe.
I got 10 of my 7/16 studs in the mail today
good for the weekend to set up the front hubs
lug nuts should be here by Tuesday
by the end of the month I should be able to order the tires I want to use
and I need to start looking at building rear brake lines
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4709/39640479032_b6337c4e29.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/23oTPn3)716 studs (https://flic.kr/p/23oTPn3) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
one hub has 7/16 studs installed now
Why are they so long?
gives me options and I want to go with open end lug nuts
been working on small things for the project
the tie bar mounts for the lower control arms are done
and I'm half way done with making a bar to connect the two sides of the coil over towers together
im using 1/2 inch adjustable joints for the bar ends, ive had some 1/2 joints laying around for almost 10 years,
so im finally putting them into action,
the tabs im making are out of 3/16 plate,
i have to go buy the tube for this job, and two 3/16 tabs that i can drill out to 1/2 inch and cut up
the car is almost ready to go back onto its wheels
next week i plan on starting to build the brake lines
oh and i fixed the cold surge at idle,
theirs a valve under the throttle body, i had to take it apart and adjust it
and now the car idle fine when its cold

i finished building my coil-over tower support bar, the two sides are linked together
the bar is made out of 3/4 120 wall dom tube and the tabs are made out of 3/16
and the joints are 1/2inch
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4650/25011265347_1f6fee8f96.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/E7agNT)rear disc brake (https://flic.kr/p/E7agNT) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
rear disc brakes, the holes are alittle on the big side, as they have been set up for 7/16 studs vs the stock 3/8's
i need to order another set of wheel studs to upgrade the back
the coilover is in the way of where i want to mount the caliper, the park brake side hits the coilover,
and mounting the caliper to the front side, the shell gets in the way
so i can mount the caliper to the bottom side of the rotor and it clears everything
i just have to switch sides with the caliper to have the park brake cable stuff facing forward
Just make sure the bleeders are up and not level, or worse. Impossible to bleed with the bleeders lower. Common sense you have probably already though of, but just a reminder. Looks like a great build.
yeah i know about the bleed valves
tomorrow i plan to take the other caliper and rotor off of the del sol
and this weekend i want to start making mounting brackets
im still thinking about mounting the calipers on the underside of the rotor,
it will help to get the park brake cable set up
and i dont want to get into moving the coilovers around or cutting up the body to much
seems like alot of work to make the caliper mount on the top rear or top front side
im thinking about making the brackets out of 3/8's
maybe 5/16 thick metal
if i dont like how its working out, i can always build something else and try a different idea
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4613/39077967595_82059338ee.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22xbNiZ)brake brackets (https://flic.kr/p/22xbNiZ) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
ive been working on a design to get the rear caliper mount good, 4 different sets up made and im still a hair off
the top part that mounts to the mini is just fine, but the half that mounts to the caliper is off just a hair
i plan on making the bracket out of 3/8 steel or alloy metal,
so im trying to get a bracket set up before i cut any metal
so im making my mock up bracket out of 3/8 wood
today i picked up brake lines for the rear
i haven't ordered the adapter fittings for the front, but i plan to run the steel braided line that i had on the car before
I used wood or brake brackets when I was trying to decide on placement. Much easier to drill and fit.
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4708/39135750965_b3257b2c01.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/22ChXhZ)rear bracket (https://flic.kr/p/22ChXhZ) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
i made the brake bracket but i don't like the way it came out
im going to move my bottom coilover mount forward and lift up the top coil over mount, so it doesn't lift the rear of the car up
so that i can mount the caliper at the rear top
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4709/40001629772_5554c1d7a8.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/23WNNTW)rear disc brake (https://flic.kr/p/23WNNTW) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
i know mounting the caliper this way was going to be a pain to bleed it
i would have had to remove the caliper and rotator it on the disc to put the bleeder at the top in order to bleed it
and then remount the caliper down below
at 1st i was willing to do all that work, and then after taking the caliper on and off a ton of times today as i made different brackets out of 3/8's wood
i knew that plan was not going to work for me
so tomorrow im going to pull the fuel tank out of the boot again and go to town cutting the inner fender up to install a pretty big tube into it and higher up into the shell as well
i have a roll cage tube inside the boot that goes side to side, so that will become the upper brace for the bigger and taller coilover towers im going to weld in this weekend
i ordered a pair of shorter springs today, they come in Wednesday
another set of wheel studs and lug nuts come in Monday
this weekend i plan to take the coilover off and start mocking up a bracket to hold the caliper at the top back corner of the rotor
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4747/40053787021_33b09c4cb7.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/242q8qR)rear brakes 2 (https://flic.kr/p/242q8qR) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
today i moved the location of the coilover
so that i could move the location of the caliper
Interesting....by changing the location of the coilover on the trailing arm, you're effectively changing the moment arm too, so did you get softer or harder springs? Who's coilovers are those - which brand? Are there a variety of springs available?
I wonder why you couldn't orient the coilover in the original position - not where the shock sits but where the original spring sat - parallel to the ground so to speak? There's plenty of length there in the back unlike the front.....

they are carrea shocks, but qa1 took over carrea, the replacement shocks are now the 75 series, the coil springs are chrome qa1's
i had 200lb springs on it behind the axle, but i also have a set of 175lb springs laying around in my garage
but i think I'm going to have to drop down to springs around 120lbs, the bottom of the coilover is mounted at the 2/3 point of the arm length,
it should be 2/3's of a inch at the shock should equal 1inch at the wheel
the spring size is 1-7/8's, i can get springs anywhere from 50lbs to 350lbs plus, i know of this site where i can get springs for $40 each
the reason for moving the coilover was to make room for the caliper, its kind of deep because of the cable park brake function thats on the back side
their was nothing wrong with my drum brake set up, i had new mini sport drum plate assy, and mini fin drums
i going to install that drum brake set up on the black lhd mini
to mount the coilovers parallel to the ground, i would have had to make some kind of cantilever system for them, which would mean more tube inside the shell to brace up the mounts
today i plan on making the upper mount, right now its just a 1/2 inch hole drilled into the inner fender in the boot
but my roll cage goes to the top of that inner fender and i have sand wich plates on the outside,
those sandwich plates are going to become the outter brace mount and i will make a tab that braces the mount on the inside
everything for the upper mount will somehow connect to the roll cage tube
my rear coilover mounts are built up a ton more then what people regularly do for coilover in the rear
aka tube connecting the two sides together with the sheet metal fenders, seems weak to me and metal work hardness and likes to rip
mine is probably over built, but my kids like to ride in my mini, and so it has to be extra safe, i dont mine if extra safe adds on a few more pounds
the only type of cantilever suspension ive used before in the past was the kp 6 link on ym old 2k gmc x-cab,
its a forward facing 4link with the two link arms on the back with the dog bones, the dogbones is what lets the axle get up higher into the c notch, i had 24's on my truck and layed frame
(https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4604/40029858302_05c46bc46d.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/23ZiufJ)kp 6 link (https://flic.kr/p/23ZiufJ) by joaquinn lopez (https://www.flickr.com/photos/153125896@N06/), on Flickr
ive done bags on the bars on my old 93 chevy full size single cab,
with this set up, the less air in the bag, the nicer the ride was, this set up was a 2:1 ratio set up so im sure my springs are going to be super over kill

the pictures are not of my work, they are random pictures i found online to show the different styles of suspension ideas i used in the past of different vehicles
speedwaymotors had some 100lbs springs on sale for $35ea, so i ordered a pair and a few other things that i wanted for the build

the springs that i ordered from speedway motors came in
and some more roll cage padding
and a shifter cable boot seal

the idea has crossed my mind

If you ever need/want send me a vectored drawing or dxf file and I can cnc plasma cut brackets for you and ship them your way. or a cardboard templet to size I can scan that and draw over the scaned image as well.

the automatic gearing is perfect for the smaller size tires we use on our minis
1st gear take off ratio is 11.5
and overdrive is 2.77 ratio
it should take off nice and still pull good mph on the highway

i started to ext the flare to the body, i also made it 1/2 inch wider
lots of welding to do, i plan to weld those panels together and to the body to remove the screws from the panels
the screws are just to hold the sheet metal to the body
i finished the metal panel work on this one side
the flare is solid, i made mounts on the underside of the flare to connect to the body
and i welded the sheet metal to the body, and i started to lay fiberglass over that
and starting to get into body work to smooth it out
i hope this weekend to start the other flare

im almost done with body work on the two rear flares

Just in case?
Obd1 Honda parts are getting hard to find in the junkyards here and
People s hit can Honda automatic trans parts because they have no value
Because they did a manual swap
And my current auto gearbox has 200k miles on it
So sooner or later it's going to give up the ghost
Facebook market place has another auto box, the guy wants $50 for it

165/60/13 tires just came in
Is there a reason you went with the taller aspect ratio? I run 175/50-13's on my car. Are those Yokomama A539's?
Joakwin, I had the same size tires on mine for a while... but in turns, it would just barely foul on the radiator so I had to step down to 50's. Yours is a different setup, but sometimes, just a smite matters.

the tires are 20.7 inches tall, about a inch or so taller then the 50 tires
honda del sol si came with a 185/60/14 and those are 22.7, so 2 inch shorter tire makes the engine spin a hair more into the power band, and the automatic gear ratios are awesome for the smaller size tires we use on our minis vs the honda manual trans and the cost of tires vs the yokomana is night and day
these tires have alittle more side wall over the 50's, so they should give a nicer ride

i paid $38 a tire shipped with fedex, so for the price, im willing to give them a try

i'll keep that in mind for my stockish 998 lhd mini
but what offset wheels did you have on your car with that size tires?
my radiator is mounted up front on the passenger side, if anything i would rub on the automatic gearbox or subframe
but my front suspension is also wider then stock
i haven't posted pictures of it et, but i kind of changed directions in the middle of my build
i wasn't going to go wide body at 1st, i had planned on keeping the old arches, group 6 or 7's, whatever they are
but plans changed and im going all out now

im cutting it up and keeping the part of the body the suspension connects to
my buddy has a lhd mini van that im trying to talk into selling to me,
he's never going to rebuild it because the floor of this van is rusted up like crazy
my plan is to build it with stock Honda suspension and Honda drivetrain
and stock honda axles
and a few other body mods to it
cut off wheels and saw zaw blades were being super slow at getting this job done,
so i ordered a plasma cutter last night
it comes in Friday

That's the magic question......
I was thinking od green and then the other day I saw this dark blue gmc suv and really liked this color
I don't know
some colors work better on small cars than big, and vise versa - I always wanna go for something bright, so I'll be more visible.
I ended up spending my del slow money on a 200 amp battery charger

I like that song
i'll pull it out into the street and post a picture later on today
me and my brother came up with a plan for the lhd black/white mini......
ive looked on google and whatnot but didn't find any pictures, but
we came up with the idea of a gasser mini
my brother got a running 85 s-10 carb/hei 4.3 v6 for free, he got to drive the s10 before before pulling the motor
the plan is to turn the mini into a gasser, he has a 48 inch wide straight axle from speedway,
t-5 manual trans since they are so small of gearbox,
and he has a extra ford 9 inch, my dad has the axle tool to shorten the housings and weld it back up straight
im going to build a 1.75 inch roll cage for the car, i just have to buy the die for my tube bender
and i have half of a front subframe that only has the body mounts on it
probably going to make it 5x4.75 bolt pattern, and stick it on some 14 inch wheels and 4 wheel disc brakes
probably going to start this project later in the summer, now its a matter of getting parts rounded up
did some more sanding on the right rear flare today
im going to rebuild my lower coilover brackets up front, i think i want to lift the front 1 inch
maybe even as high as 1.25inches

Don't forget to raise the rear the same amount as you raise the front.
The big air dam in front may need some openings cut in the top to let in more cooling air to the bottom portion of your radiator.

I plan to check a few holes into it
im not sure if I want to cut a drill opening in the center of the air dam or not
looks cool, I don't like the big air dam seems too damn tall(not that it matters just my thoughts) maybe angle it out or something? the rest looks good. Can't wait to see it painted.

to each their own
the front lower air dam is angled out a hair, not much but just a hair
i made it so big so that the car wouldn't look so lifted, even with it being dropped before, and the old set up, i aways felt the front body work was way to high off the ground
down the road if i change my mind and dont like it anymore, i can always change it up
the nice thing about being able to do my own work
pressure switch on my air compressor went out today
cant claim it under the warranty because I cant find any of my paperwork for when I got the compressor from lowes
and I paid cash for the compressor and lowes doesn't have anything in their system saying I got it last summer
and im pretty sure I got the ext warranty for it as well
so I ghetto bypass the pressure switch and built some air up
and ordered a new pressure switch online, probably have it by the end of next week or so
im building another rack in my garage and im using my air nail gun
kind of need air
It's always sumthin......
I have been through a number of those pressure switches I wonder if there are better ones? I have put at least 5 on between the 2 shop compressors and 2 on the one at home.
All are 220-volt single phase compressors two of them run the full motor load through the switch the main shop compressor has a contractor that the switch controls but it don't seem to matter it goes bad just as much.
Thinking of buying a rotary compressor for the shop.
Also had motor problems on all but one.
Remember when a good compressor lasted your life and your kids life and still kept going.
They don't make em like they used to.
It was 106 and I was kind of using the compressor hard with some sanding
I bypassed the switch for now and I just watch it build air to turn it off when it should be
My old Campbell Hausfeld is now going on 30 years, all I've done to it is change the oil occasionally.....they DON'T build them like they used to - you're right.
A rotary is a great way to go for a shop, your air costs will drop dramatically - I don't know if the savings will be enough to offset the cost of the new compressor, but the quietness will be noticed and appreciated, and the compressor will run at a constant state instead of shutting off and restarting - it's those peak loads that really cost you on your electric bill.
This is the freebie 120 gallon beast. Hands down best tool in the shop. Best part is having it outside so it's quiet inside

that's a bad a$$ compressor
I wish I could have my compressor outside, I would have to build a out house for it, so it doesn't get rained on in the summer time and to keep it out of the heat
email says the new pressure switch will be in Wednesday
I can hold off using it to much for the next few days
I used to help my neighbors flip cars, that's how I saved up to buy this 60 gallon set up, before I had a 30gal and I killed that thing, the electric motor was built into the compressor type deal, I broke the compressor,
I rebuilt this guys (70 or 72 I forget now) f250 truck, new motor/trans/ cleaned the frame, sand blasted everything else that wasn't replaced, new water pump, oil pan, blasted engine acc brackets, timing cover, everything painted, frame was covered in years of oil, pressure washed the frame and painted it, ( I had to lift the cab off of the truck to clean the frame), suspension parts were blasted and painted or replaced for new and painted, painted the intake manifold, air cleaner was blasted and painted, I made a ton of $$ on the job, took me 6 months to get it done, mostly waiting on the guy to bring parts
the guy had a cooler on the p/s pump, and all the cooling fins were bent to sh* t so i straighten them up by hand, and got all the oil off of it, and sand blasted it and painted it gloss black, the guy was having a hard time finding a new one, so i rebuilt the old one
i did steel braided lines from the trans to the trans cooler,
i built a tube trans cross member, guy went from a 2 speed trans to a 3 speed automatic, and that meant the driveshaft was to long
ended up doing the steering gearbox to the rest of the steering parts, and re-wiring the engine and put a efan kit on it and wiring for that
I fixed a few rust spots on the firewall, and bed lined the firewall, inner fenders on the two sides, everything was cleaned under the hood
that ford truck paid for a 2 week vacation to Hawaii
but all the sand blasting I did, I ended up killing that 30 gallon air compressor, and then I helped my neighbors flip cars and got the money for my 60 gallon air compressor
the guy roped me in, the job started out as a simple motor swap, and the motor looked to nice with all the other dirty parts, and then the trans swap, and cleaning everything,
i planned on motor swap the truck in a weekend, pull it friday night and have the new motor in saturday and having it running sunday and gone sunday night

proto type haro fst frame from 1984,
before it had the haro chevrons and serial number on the frame
the frame and forks where white
but i sanded it down, had some surf rusts on it, i took on this side project on because my oldest son needed a new bmx to ride,
and i want my kids to ride awesome bmx bikes,
my son wanted the bike to be all black
the bikes frame/forks is haro, but everything else on the bike is gt,
the handle bars, neck, crank, sprocket, wheels, seat post are all gt
building this bike for my son has got me pumped up again to wait to work on the mini
my si joint on the left side has been acting up, so i haven't wanted to do anything much lately,
and this weekend we got a ton of rain, so my lower back and hips have not been happy.

Not to mention, it's probably pretty hot there by now!
Do you have A/C in your garage? I put a big ass window unit in mine, makes a hell of a difference!
I have a huge portacool unit, it cools my garage down by 10 degs, it holds 42 gallons of water in it, and pushed something around 3900 cfm
a/c unit would be nice, but with the garage door open, not sure how well it would work
and its been around 107 the last few weeks, super hot
I learned that if I open up my garage door maybe 2 feet, and leave about a 2 foot gap between the garage door and the portacool, it will cool my garage down even more,
I had my garage down to a cool 80 deg today
so I put in some work
the lower part of the valance is 16ga sheet metal, and the flares are fiberglass, the sheet metal goes almost all the way to the end of the flare, maybe 2 inches short of the end of the flare, I did a lot of fiberglass mat to bridge the gap and make it somewhat smooth,
so far its just fiberglass matt that's been sanded down to smooth it out, I haven't used any filler yet
some spots at the bottom are hard to get at with my electric sanders, so I need to sand it by hand somemore, but so far its coming out pretty good

My new trans cooler will be here this afternoon, I changed my trans mount on my element and that thing was torn all the way, the rubber part around the bolt hole wasn't even close to being connected to the rest of the mount housing
Today the classic nes comes back out, $60 for it, I'm going to try and pick one up this morning

I hand bent this mount
I need to buy a sheet metal bender tool, would make things a lot faster
I could use one of those as well as a small metal lathe, but there's just no room in my little shop. I've had decent results bending metal over a piece of angle iron clamped in a vise, but a bender would be so much faster as you said.

what bender do you have?
i have been looking at a small one from them but wasn't sure if it was any good
this is the one i want
https://www.harborfreight.com/36-in-metal-brake-with-stand-62335.html
going on vacation to San Diego for 6 days, so my tool buying money is nothing right now,
wife would kill me if i went and spent a few hundred bucks on some tools right before going on vacation
plus i wont be able to use it while gone
but this bender doesnt seem bad for small sheet metal bending
https://www.harborfreight.com/18-inch-bending-brake-39103.html
but the idea of making my own bender has crossed my mind
buying the steel and welding it up and whatnot
i dont think it would be hard to build my own
and then i can make it out of some heavy duty metal
I have the 30 inch table top one. Does good on sheet down to about 16 gauge then gets difficult.

made the trim panel out of some 16 ga sheet metal, I made a few mistakes when cutting out the center section, and just had to weld those messed up sections up
That's what I like about working with sheet metal.....make a mistake? A little weld, a little grind, just like new again! ;D
Got some new wheels for the mini, I
Going to change the color of them before I mount the new tires
Should have the paint work done this week on the new rims
Just tell me you're not going to paint them black! I'm so tired of black wheels......I mean, it's your car and all but black is so last decade, and all they do is look dirty - to me.
heres a picture of what my dirty wheels look like right now
and yes, they will be "black"
because almost all the trim on my car is black
and im still thinking about painting my car od green, a ww2 od green
my old wheels were 13x6 wellers, satin black
new wheels are 13x6 bart wheels, i got them from summitracing

I kind of like the 319 color but its more of a late ww2 color
https://quartertonparts.com/product/33070-early-wwii-od-paint-one-gallon/
this color is a early ww2 od, i like this one because its more like the color that came on my 37 chevy truck
i also want to use the red primer because i know that will effect the color of the paint
but at the same time, the idea of using today's standard of paint and matching it to the color i want and then doing a gloss od has crossed my mind,
but im not sure how a gloss od will look
and then sometimes i think about a dark blue or a baby blue color
im all over the place when it comes to what color i want to make my car this time
but my goal is to paint it no later then sept this year
I like the idea of the OD green. I rattle canned the ass end of my project mini OD green. I thought it looked cool.
Sorta like this?

Sorta like this?
yeah without the sticker
but the idea of putting the star on the door in black has crossed my mind
my door handles are painted in satin black, so if I did do one then it would be that
but maybe I should paint my door handles gloss black before putting them back on since my wheels are gloss black
one dirty wheel painted gloss black, lol
im just joking about it now

worked on the radiator mount today
since I jacked up my alloy rad, and I had the stock rad laying around and nothing is wrong with it, I said screw it, im going to use it
the stock automatic radiator is a hair wider then the alloy one I had
so I had to remake the mounts to offset the radiator location a small amount
and I like the placement better, much happier with how it sat

I made the top bar bolt up, and its also going to act as my e-fan mount when I get the new e-fan that I want
I had a 10inch fan before, and it worked fine, but I want to upgrade to a 14 inch e-fan, it should move alittle more cfm
and im also going to mount the horn off of the top bar,
and I was thinking about adding a led light behind the grill in the center, of doing two small fog lights down low, but im not sure

moved the car outside in the sun to get a different view of it
I turned it around to work on the rear valance area and cut the rear fenders on the back side
That extra room in the front of a clubby makes all the difference, doesn't it? I'm not sure you could have done the automatic in a round nose.
That front spoiler sure looks massive still, but if you're going to run a front bumper that will break it up a bit......
Did you firm up on a color for the exterior? Still going with an "army" green?
Love the photo of it sitting there. Looks mean.

im still planning on running a front bumper
not sure about the green color, but I started to prep the roof for paint, sanding on it
but im still working on body work
i got the right rear fender 98% done, it just needs primer now and to double check i have no low spots
i started to work on the rear valance area of the car,
i cut the height of the fenders at the rear bottom, so im going to tuck the exhaust up into that area,
so i need to rebuild the rear section of the exhaust and im thinking about having it come out on the right rear side
or shorten it and have it come out in front of the right rear wheels
still need to mount the honda seats into it, im pulling out the nissan micra march seats
need to build a dash and a center console
but the interior work is going to be after i finish body work and before paint
paint is always the last step
in the photo i posted, i have two different size tires on the car
the fronts are the new rims with the 165/60/13's and the rear is the old rims with the 175/50/13's
thats why the front is sitting higher then the rear right now
the side wall between the two is huge, the 165/60's side wall is almost double of the 175/50's

so here is a update on my progress

basecoat?
wasn't feeling the way it was coming out, so I sanded it down to start over
and I found a few spots that I didn't care for the way it looked with paint on it,
so I took a step back to fix some small pin holes that I missed when I was looking over the car before
someday i'll get paint on it....again
Been there :( But in the end they come out better than trying to save a bad job.
Tomorrow will be the third repaint of the inner fenders for the 50 chevy project solvent popping like crazy the last two 50.gif WTF I followed the tech sheet going to try light coats with lots of flash time hopefully it won't look dry sprayed.
I figured out the problem, it's to hot inside my garage, it's like 87 at night and close to 100 in the day time, the paint is drying to fast and it's coming out right, I think I need to thin the paint more or get something to slow the dry time down, when I painted the car before, I was in England and the temperature was way cooler, I had to heat my garage up to 70 and the paint came out fine and then living here, when I repainted the front clip and boot lid, it was the winter time and I heated the garage up a hair and it was fine, so this is the first time for me trying to paint in the 90-100 plus heat range, I have a lot to figure it out or wait till like Oct/Nov time frame for the weather to cool down and paint it then
It's 2am and my garage is 77 deg right now, I put down two coats of paint tonight and the paint went on with no problems.....it's coming around...I'm pretty happy with how it's coming out now
4.gif
I did the same on those inner fenders I'm working on 3rd time was good I waited until it was cooler. Also did lighter coats and added a filter to my compressor just in case it was oil contamination.
I think the temp was the biggest factor.
I was looking up the temps from last year and it looks like late oct time frame is when the temp will get down to around the 70's,
so im looking at waiting till then for paint
but I still need to build my sheet metal dash and center console and get the front seats mounted
I have some Nissan Micra k11 seats right now but they are a hair on the wide side for the mini
the del sol seats are more narrow then the Micra seats, but I was thinking about some Dodge Neon seats,
I saw some in the junkyard that were in good shape and the color I want
but I need to go back with a tape measure and see how wide they are
they are at my local pull a part, they are about $25 each, not to bad in price
I ended up building the exhaust over again, im making it come out of the right side in front of the wheel, I still need to build a tip, im thinking of making that kind of a flat oval shape,
but im not sure yet, because I still haven't made up my mind if im going to build steps to connect the two flares together on each side
but I have picked up the metal to build them, lol
some flat plate and some 1.5 inch dom tube, the tube will get welded to the roll cage plates on the bottom side, but I was thinking maybe getting some thin 1.25 dom tube to come off the roll cage plates
like a .83 tube or something around that size, it only has to support the weight of people getting into the car, not very much, or not that im going to have many people riding in it with me
my wife has only rode in my mini a few times over the 9 years that i have had it
It's so low, do you think you really need a step?
My bride has ridden in my Mini 1 or 2 times...total.
I worked on the exhaust this past weekend, I just have to make mounts for the center and side and it will be back on the car for good this time
I'm looking at buying a bench top mill, kind of a smaller one
Some guy up in phx has a SIEG x2 with no extra tooling, guy said he was into wood working and wanted to try out metal and didn't like it, so I don't think he used it much or if any at all, pretty much a new machine
and then some guy in sandeigo has a jet jmd-15 and it comes with extra tooling
Going to pick up the jet mill Sunday
Wish I had room for even a small lathe and mill in my shop!
Make me an offer I can't refuse...... 77.gif

sitting in my garage now
sweet that one came with some tooling correct?
I'm very interested to see how capable that machine is as I would like to down grade to something smaller than what I had I sold a wells index 847 it was a beast but took up too much space for how much I used it.
i've also been looking at these http://charteroakautomation.com/our-products/cnc-bed-mill/
That looks like a beast too! What would you spend for that? Can you use your existing tooling or would you have to buy all new stuff?
That little Jet unit would be perfect for what I do....
It came with a vise and the collets for the end mills, I have end mills from 3/16 up to 3/4 and it has a drill bit holder collet set up and another thing, not sure the name of it but it's used to shave the thickness of the metal, and it came with a hardware kit and a few other bits, I got it mounted to the stand this morning, I had to clean my garage because it was kind of a hot mess and where I put this mill, I had a table saw and my itb d16 drivetrain, the d16 tucks real nice right next to the mill. But I picked this machine up for $900
https://quartertonparts.com/product/34087-olive-drab-gallon-paint/
thinking about this color
my dad gave me some new hplv paint guns, a primer gun with a 1.8 tip
and a paint gun with a 1.3 tip
and I spent the afternoon making a new dash for the car
im building it out of 1/2 inch mdf
and I cut some 3/4 thick strips out of some 3/4 mdf to use as the backing where the top and bottom come together
I used some wood glue and some finishing nails to hold it together for now
im thinking about adding some fiberglass mat to the back side because I want to trim the front side top edge a lot, kind of round it out
I'd like to see that dash!
I know the army green means more to you than some of us, but I think cars are supposed to be shiny.....

I was thinking about mounting some tweeters up in the top corners, but I have to make something to hold the tweeters in that location
and then make some type of fiberglass pod to hold a 6.5 inch mid woofer under the dash area
I made the radio mount today also, made it out of a steel plate and then cut the opening into the plate with the mill,
I plan to weld that to the roll cage dash bar, the radio will be kind of tucked under the dash somewhat, kind of out of sight

I believe the later MK-IV+ style tail lights with the built-in backup light fit the same openings as the MK-II/III style. I may be wrong - perhaps someone can measure them and report back?
yeha the mk2 style tail lights fit the later bodies
my cars a 85 and i got mk2 tail lights in it,
the mk2 tail lights are a hair smaller then the later models, the seals are different sizes
not much has been done on the mini for a few days
I started to build some internal boot hinges, the plan is to remove the outer hinges aka shave them
i have the middle section built but i haven't made the mounts yet
i plan to work on those mounts next weekend

Has it cooled off enough to start thinking about painting it?
yeha but I have to get a vin inspection done on the car to get a new plate sticker on the car before I can paint it and I want to get a plate with the old brit reg number on it
i took the car off the road in the dmv system a few years back after i had my hip surgeries, (couldn't drive a manual trans with a heavy clutch anymore)
im going on terminal leave from the Air Force starting 2 Nov and if I re-do my paperwork for the new sticker, I can get it tax free and not have to wait in line at the DMV
so im going to get the car together real fast as a temp thing, get the level 1 inspection done and then get the new plate and sticker on the car
and then take the glass out of the car and paint it
I have a new front glass for it, I haven't got new rear glass yet but by the time im done painting it, I will have it
ive been thinking about going to a lighter spring up front, i have 350's right now, i was thinking of trying 300's or 325's
i haven't been able to find a 325lb spring in 2.5 inch dia by 8 inch,
so i was thinking about getting some 10inch springs and cutting them down
they are $40 each plus the ride, right now the car has qa1 350lb springs up front, and they are just a hair on the stiff side,
i have to play around with the springs up front to figure out what size will work the best
i have some of these springs in the back of my car, i think i have some 200's or 175 or 160's, i dont remember right now but the back rides pretty good,
and doesnt really have the weight transfer problems and torque steer issues that the higher powered cars are known to have
i would love to go to an air ride up front, but thats going to be way to costly right now, some shockwave bags would be awesome

Since you're going to refinish the holes for the original boot hinges anyway, why not weld some studs where those holes are, then attach your plate there?
Probably in the wrong place tho, now that I think about it......
Be interesting to see how it turns out. Gonna use a popper or keep the latch/lock assy?

going to keep the latch lock assy,
if I mount the hinge to the bottom, the seal will get in the way and make it super tight to close the lid or just be a pain and I think the body will be in the way also
ive only seen this done one time on a mini and that was on the mini forum, but I think that mini went up in a fire
but I saved the pictures from way back in the day when I seen it
I like the idea and always wanted to try this out
makes the boot lid real clean
I went to the local dmv and asked them what I need to do to get the mini registered and they said I need a level 2 inspection, they said since the del sol was already in my name, the inspection should go real fast, since they know that the drivetrain isn't hot
I have a 11:20 appt tomorrow with them
the mini has collector car insurance on it and I'm going to the AZ Mvd here in about a hour
I'm thinking about waiting till tomorrow to do the registration on it, so it will be due in Nov vs Oct
they open tomorrow at 07:30, so i can go straight over to the mvd and make it a Nov car
not unless they give me Nov today but i dont think it will happen

even got my mk1 metro floor matts in the car
still need to put the carpet on the inner fender wells.....I have to find them, or find some nice black carpet to use
Are you driving it much? How does it run? I think the auto trans would be well suited to this lightweight car, smoother power delivery and plenty quick. Does it torque steer much?

it has alittle bit of torque steer but that could also be because I need to get the alignment done
I do need to check the cooling system, make sure its full of coolant with no air pockets now that I drove it for a good amount
I got up to 60mph today
on the way back home from the dmv, it started to get hot, a lot more then I would like
I can always add a heater core under the hood and put a fan on it, for extra cooling
or change the t stat to one that will work better
because i know the summer time here, the thing isn't going to like the 100 plus temp
its probably around 75 here right now
the inspection side went good.....kind of.....
it took longer then it should have
but what saved my tail was the vin number being stamped into the cowl area
because the vin plate has the regular rivets in it, and they say those aren't the correct rivets
so I looked up mini spares on my phone and showed them the oem number for the rivets and then they were like oh ok
and then the engine number came up belonging to a 1994 honda civic......the inspector called his boss to help him figure it out
I pulled that engine out of the 1995 honda del sol, but I know at some point in its life, the car fax report said the del sol had its engine rebuilt, less then 20k miles ago,
of course I didn't have the car fax report with me
and then that 1994 civic was stolen for a few hours back in 1996
and then the boss asked me if i cut my car up to make it right hand drive
so i told him its british spec, he had no idea what that meant, so i told him they drive on the other side of the car and road in England
so they made me fill out some paperwork telling the story of how i got the car
and they gave my mini a new vin number and put it on the car
and made me pay $25 for the inspection
and i was good to go
what scared the sh$t out of me, i went to go back inside to pay the $25 and a few Tpd cars pulled up and went inside the garage to look at my car,
and at this point, i had to wait and couldn't go back into the garage
and then 5 mins later they come out and saw nice car
Whew!
I know it can be tough to register a car in some states, and others are ridiculously easy - Kansas is that way as long as the vin matches the plate they're good to go.

It's just scary how ignorant some people are.
oh yeah I forgot about this part
the inspector asked me,
"what make is this car" (while looking at the V5)
so I reply " Austin"
inspector "oh you mean Aston Martin"
me "No just Austin"
inspector "any relations?"
me "probably, i think it is its much older miniature brother"
inspector " oh okay"
so i asked him if he was a car guy, he said no
probably thought i was a big A hole for messing with him, if he even realized i was joking with him
Actually, there is no relationship between Aston Martin and the old Austin names in British car manufacturing.

I know I was joking
1st drive with the new AZ plates on the car
maybe the car didn't like the new plate number
I still need to go back down to the dmv to get the plate changed to the original UK plate number on his car
the crank pulley broke, but it was the og one from the del sol with 203K miles on it
the other pulley was on my itb d16 motor, im swapped it out and will buy another one for the itb motor to keep that complete

I think I need to cut the exhaust tip off, I think I went with a 2.25 or 2.5 inch pipe, that mug acts like a megaphone and the exhaust is pretty dang loud, at idle its not but when I get into it, I know its super loud and its only a matter of time before Tpd notices how loud it is
the idea of sticking my brand new twin box rc40 under the car and having the exhaust come out the back of the car has crossed my mind,
I like the look of the side exit, but maybe I went with to big of a dia pipe?
I need to measure the dia of the pipe for the twin box rc40
My buddy's D16 has a 2" pipe all the way back. I'd be curious to see how it sounds with an RC40 box on it. My buddy has never been happy with how his sounds - it sounds too much like a Honda! :D

but I can tell that it doesn't sound as loud and I think it sounds pretty deep and
I feel it doesn't sound all ricer

I think my cooling problem is a stuck thermostat
or the new water pump is bad
im thinking thermostat is bad, because the lower hose is hotter then the upper hose
edit, I tested the t stat and its good
tomorrow I plan on back flushing the engine, but I think thats fine
I did a compression check and everything was at 175-180, pretty even on all 4 cylinders, so I think my head gasket is good still
I do plan to get my alloy 2 core radiator fixed and I plan to modify a stock R53 e-fan to fit behind the rad
with the two of them next to each other, they are about 4.5 inches deep, and the fan housing design gives me good space for the upper hose to connect to the rad
so its just a matter of cutting up the fan housing to make work with the honda rad,
tomorrow I will see if this is do able or not
my R53 e-fan relay is bad, but I plan on cutting that of and just running the two wire set up,
I know the fan works because when it went out on me before, as a temp, I jumped the relay on the houseing and made that mug work so that I could go buy a replacement fan
ps....oh yeah I almost forgot to say anything about the exhaust, I took the mini up to 90mph, or what my speedo says anyways, I think it was more like 75-80mph
and the exhaust is loud but it is a livable loud, I dont think its over the top loud, just perfect for the amount of volume it puts out
and driving it around town doing anywhere from 30-45 mph, it was nice and I even had the side pop out windows open
I think im going to be happy with the exhaust this time around, or happy for now
edit one more time......I just looked it up, tire size comparison, at 90mph on the speed, the mini is doing 82.5mph, it did that speed with no problems, and it felt like it had a lot more to give,
What RPM were you turning at "90" mph? I would have thought the automatic would have a taller final drive ratio. I recently put a taller diff in Don's Pup, went from a 4.27 to a 3.75, really made the car a lot more livable.....
I thought that exhaust sounded pretty good, not too "Honda-ish" ;D
Overheating....are you sure the rad is clean and flowing freely? I always check the easy stuff first. The R53 had a two speed fan, usually what fails is the resistor that controls the low speed....the fan is fine but they didn't sell the resistor as a separate part - now they have a kit to replace just the resistor, so if you get one of those you can have a two speed fan again.
You're getting there!
The r53 fan didn't work out, I stuck a Chevy impala cop car fan into the mix
I back flush the engine today, I put a blank t stat and the engine seemed to stay cooler for a lot longer now
After running the engine for a hour the engine temp was half way
But I noticed that when I rev the engine up, alittle bit of water comes out of the exhaust
And after about 2 hours of running, I noticed that high revs it would smoke white alittle bit
That would be signs of a cracked head on the exhaust side of it
I ran a compression test and those numbers where great ie 175 range
So I think I'm going to have to buy one of those kits that can tell me if their is compression going into the coolant
Water coming out of the exhaust is a normal byproduct of combustion, white smoke may or may not indicate a problem. Usually if combustion gasses are leaking into the cooling system you'll see bubbles in the radiator....

yeah it has some of those as well
the del sol always had a over heating issue from when I got it at that auction summer of 2017, but my winning bid price for it was $275
not to bad of a price,
theirs a place up in phx that i can get a rebuilt motor for $950 with no core, and they come with a 75.5mm bore
that should make alittle more power
so maybe next year or so i'll buy another d16 motor
but for now, i plan on trying to find another used head for this motor and go swap it out in the next few weeks
but today i put a bigger fan onto the rad
this fan is super loud
i got it out of a chevy impala v6 car
the a/c fan motor went out, and so the twin fans were replaced, so i took the set up to cut it up to fit the main cooling fan on the mini

it mounts to the back seat wall, box in the boot and woofers inside the shell, the back seat will go over it
You do realize that the body panel that forms the rear seat back is structural to the Mini?
Cutting that much out to permit the box to stick into the boot with the front of the box in the cabin with compromise the structural rigidity of the body to torsional forces.

that would be true if I didn't have a roll cage in my car
it has a roll cage made out of dom 120 wall and cds 120 wall tube, by 1.50 or 38mm, I used a smaller dia tube but went with a thicker wall
the bigger 1.75 dia tube could have been used with a .95 wall thick tube, but 1.75 tube looks huge in a mini vs the 1.50 dia tube and since the car is so small to start out with, I went with the 1.50 dia, this cage is super close to the body, in a bigger car I would use the bigger tube but most pre built cages for minis use 38mm tube, I figured it would be fine
and it has legs that connect at the B post top and follow the body line to the C post area with a bend to connect the cage to the upper coilover mount in the boot
I just dont have a rear turret kit to support the rear of the car and act as a upper coilover mounts, yeha no stock sheet metal wheel tubes supporting the rear of my car, the rear turret kits are just thicker metal welded to the sheet metal, one of the reasons as to why I cant use a stock mini fuel tank anymore
and at the B post at the floor, it has a tube that connects each side together and connects to the exhaust tunnel in the center and it also has two tubes from that cross tube that connect to the heel board and sandwich plates that connects the mini tech rear subframe to the cage, and the heel board outer bolts have been upgraded in size as well
i know this is not the perfect way to check for flex but
i can lift the car up from one corner till 3 wheels are in the air and then i can use a 2nd jack on the body on the side with the back wheel in the air and jack the body up and i can just tell by feel the body starts to move right away,
i tried the same thing with my 998 black and white mini that is pretty much stock, no roll cage, and it takes alot more to jack that car up onto 3 wheels and the body flexes alot when compared to the other car
my buddy had a b18 mini, and before he put a cage in it, you could feel the chassis flex from the engine power, as soon as he put a cage in, that flex was gone
cds is a type of tube they use over in the UK for roll cage building
dom is a type of tube used over here in the states for roll cage building
maybe i didn't post a picture of the rear cage set up on here
If you need a set of those turrets I have a pair I'm not using.

No spare tire anymore?
I have to buy a 5th rim and another tire, since im running 13's that are 20.8 inches tall
plus I haven't had a spare tire in the car for more then 5-6 years
my old r53 never had a spare, I just made sure I always had good tires on it
Yeah, I never carry one in my 09 Clubby either, but I do keep one in the Classic - even tho I keep new tires on it.

installed the jbl's into the box today
the jbl's have alittle bit bigger of a magnet then those sony subs
I had to buy a whole new sub once cause I miss measured the size of the magnet compared to my box size. Of course the box was tiny cause it was wedged behind the seat of my 85 toyota pickup. Speaking of which, I finished taking all the wiring out of it since that system is going in the mini eventually. All this stereo talk got me itching to work on it. Crazy thing is, I'm still using the 4 gauge power/ground wire I've had since my first stereo as a teenager back in the 90's. Stuff still looks new.

two days in a row now
this white stuff on the ground, in Tucson, wtf
Really? Snow in Tucson...land of the sun? Damn global warming......climate change indeed! ;D
Wow, you can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles! whoah yeah.... 4.gif
Today I found a small space heater for my garage, and took my d16z6 head off, figured out why the thing was running hot.....the head gasket dowel pin holes were to
Big, so the gasket had side to side play, so the gasket didn't line up correctly and so it seems that was the cause of it getting coolant into cylinders, but it would burn away, and the engine still had 180-185 psi of compression, the old head gasket was a felpro that had some blue paint like stuff on it. The new gasket I put on it is a oem Honda one, better fit
The old head gasket was a 3 layer and inbetween each lay it had coolant mixed in, that thing wasn't sealing to well
So I checked the head and block and they are flat, good to go,
I got the head back on and torqued to spec, I put the intake on but I have to pull it back off because the bottom center stud threads needs to be cleaned up, so while I got it off again, I'm going to the hondata thermo intake manifold gasket I have laying around,
I have 3-4 normal paper style gaskets for this motor but I got this hondata gasket for my built itb d16z6 but i can get another one down the road since it's going to be a long time before I build my other project.......
I'll post pictures later as soon as I figure out how to on my phone
Cool, nice to get the definitive answer to the problem......

a very small amount of body work

Im thinking about sending the car to a body shop and have them finish up the body work and paint
and then sending the del sol seats off to have them recovered
im looking at moding the honda column to fit a mini's steering wheel onto it
ive been looking for honda steering wheels but they are super $$ or I dont like the way they look

I got my garage temp up to 72 degs
Nice day in Tucson......it's up to 3* here in KC.
So, flat it all off then find the low spots and fill them, then one more coat pf primer and then color?
I put a 2nd coat of primer on it today, because I didn't like the way the 1st coat came out, had my garage temps up to 74.3 deg today
I found some spots that I need to work, a few low spots
I plan to give the primer a few days for it to dry all the way, and then work the spots
i think by mid feb i should be good for paint
this is going to be the color of the car

Top too, or will you do that in a contrasting color, maybe black?
I was looking at painting it all one color, because I shaved the body lines off the car, so I dont have the drip rails anymore and those were a good line to use to break up the colors
im thinking about painting the door handles and mirrors and gas cap the same od green as the body, and even painting the black rubber seal for the fuel next od green
and then just have the wheels satin black
or maybe i should paint the rims od green as well and then the tires will be the only black color on the car

im trying to get my car painted before I have to go help my brother in san diego
my dad gave my brother a 77 4x4 chevy truck, it still has the running gear and everything but my dad got the truck because it had a new crate 350 in it,
and thats all he wanted from it,
the 77 has back fees on it, and needs smog in cali, so its now a parts truck
my brother has a cab and fenders for a 59 chevy truck, that he wants to stick on that 77 frame and he has a carb vortec head 327 for it
but since its a 4x4, he needs help to pull the 77 cab off that frame, so i told him i want a new york gaint style pizza and some beer, and i will bring out my plasma cutter
and i will make that cab lighter and we can turn it in for some scrap metal and get a few bucks
so i plan to go out after i get the paint put down on the mini,
so i needed to make sure i had all the extra stuff needed for my plasma cutter ahead of time to get the job done
im probably going to make a 50 foot 220volt ext cord, to run that out to where the truck is and cut some pos truck up
my brother has a 80 gallon air compressor set up to run the air side of the machine, and he is going to have a buddy install a 2nd 220v outlet outside in the work area so we can run the compressor and cutter at the same time
i haven't done much work on the mini, its been snowing here and its super cold
I ordered brand new glass all around for the car
new front and back windows with seals,
new door windows, with the rubber seal it sits on inside the door on the guts
and new pop out side windows
as soon as the snow goes away, I plan to move my project truck outside for a few days
and have me a good look at the mini and make sure I didn't miss anything on the body
and prep the garage with plastic and remove the wheels and lift it up on jack stands and paint it
im looking at march time frame now just because the weather is being crazy

I stuck ls3 injectors onto the motor with some top hats
I replaced water pump, front and rear main seals, valve cover gaskets, valley cover seal, intake manifold gaskets, flex plate, ls3 oil pan with the parts that go for that, hi-volume oil pump, ls3 injectors with adapters for the height plus wiring
4l80e filter and filter seal, front pump seal, rear output seal, pan gasket, rear mount, trans cooler line fittings to -6AN

I ordered this steering wheel for the mini, and a short eg civic adapter for it as well,
to get that stock air bag steering wheel out of the car
body shop is saying it should be done with paint by Wednesday, well see
I ordered a eastwood bead roller so that I can build the door cards for the mini,
I have some thin sheet metal to use and some vinyl to cover it
Wed! You must be excited to see it, is the color what you wanted?

I dont think they will be ready to paint the mini by tomorrow, much less the primer
I have the cash pulled out and its just chilling
I want the car back but at the same time its going to stop me working on the truck as much, until I get it all done but I got time
up top is a video of the truck's front suspension, just click on the image and the video should play
I still need to order shocks for it
im waiting on the 3rd member still, the housing is on back order, im getting ready to cancel that order and order from a different company

seats for the mini,
they fit me as well, the pair of classic bucket seats I have for the mini are tight in the hip area for me, I could use them only for short drives but not for a long drive
body shop isn't done with the mini yet,
it was Wednesday and that is long gone now, but the plan changed for the front clip and hood, so maybe thats why they didn't make Wednesday
the body shop is changing out the hood pin set up to some air craft style latches, 4 on the hood and 4 on the front clip to hold it down, because its still a flip front and removed front clip
the lower front mounts for the clip rotate on some 3/8's bolts and the brackets are held to the front subframe with a pair of 1/2 inch bolts, that also hold the alloy tow points to the front subframe
I'd like to see that......how they are doing the clips and such.
My granddaughter will be joining you all in Tucson this fall when she starts college!

77.gif
its hot here and she will need to drink a lot of water and she will get alone just fine with the heat
my front clip has the A panels built into them, so they are going to put the push lock clips off of the panel that the door bolts to, 2 on each side
I just got a new toy in the mail today, I have to go buy some sheet metal to try it out
but I spend most of the day working on a gmc eonvy, how ever its spelled, but it has a 5.3 and it had a code for knock sensors
not sure if you guys know anything about ls engines, but the knock sensors are mounted in the valley under the intake manifold 50.gif
and then i dont have the tool to disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel rails,
and the right side clamp for the crossover tube was bent when i took it off, and the fuel o ring was bad,
so i got lucky because i had a extra truck fuel rail set up and i have extra fuel o rings,
so i put it on, hooked it up, code cleared on its own,
did the job for my neighbor
but in return, he has a homeboy with a hook up on tires
so im getting two 205/75/15 tires mounted on some brand new rims, ( mock up rims) they are going on the 37
I got the rims from summit racing, $52 ea, they are the same rims I have on the mini but a 15x7 with 5x4.75 bolt pattern
the 205x75x15 tires are the same size I want to go with in 20's (27.11 inches tall), ones I figure out what kind of rim spacing I need for the truck
the diff for the 9 inch comes in monday
so i can put the axle together next week, this weekend im going to try and work on installing the rear air bags
She lives just up the road in Phoenix now, so she knows about the heat!

on another note, do we have any mini people on this site that live up in Seattle?
im going up to Seattle in June, North East part...in a small town called Kirkland......yes the same name as Costco, lol
going up to see my grandparents and some cuzns and I have some friends down in the McChord area as well

im still going to weld a bar on the front side of those notches, putting a small bend into it

body shop said they are doing one more coat of primer and then it will be ready for my primer and paint
they plan to stay late and come in early to get the paint on it
I took this picture at around 1pm today
they were still working on the hood, it has a low spot but it wont take much time to have it primed and blocked out and ready to go, another guy was working on it when I showed up earlier
they told me to come back around 5pm, to see it in all one primer color and ready for my primer and paint,
they were going to let it dry in the booth over night and have it ready to go first thing in the morning
I would go back at 5pm but my son has a project due tomorrow at school and hes no where close to being done
Picked up the mini
The boot lid and hood were still in the paint booth

started to mess around with door cards
alloy and then I plan to cover them with some vinyl
I got a 19 inch east-wood bead roller to build door cards, I just have to learn how to use it, lol
but I figure what the heck, only way to learn is to start putting lines into some metal and see what happens
Is that one hand operated or powered?
What do you think of the color, did it come out the way you hoped it would?

I got the electric motor kit for it as well
eastwood had the 19 inch bead roller on sale a month or so ago
I kind of wanted the 27 inch, but the 19 was on sale and its more then good for what I need it for
the 27 would have been huge and heavy
right now im using the 19 inch set on on a vise and its kind of a pain to set up
I have a huge vise bolted to a 22.5 inch rim
at some point when I get more room in the garage, I would like to build a stand for the bead roller set up, and maybe set it up to rotate at the top, to make it easier to put away when done
the color of this od green came out better then what I wanted, I was looking for that perfect picture image of od green, or perfect as the image was in my head, and this just hit the nail on the head for me
Good, I'm glad the paint shop hit the color....are you planning to put decals and such on it? Like army markings of some sort?

I was thinking about getting some flat white or satin black stars made, with a magnet backing, so I can take them on and off
as far as the numbers on the hood and whatnot, im still doing my homework on those, for the size and what needs to be on it
but if I put the reg number, I will use my og british plate numbers, B235 BMK
went up to Seattle for 2 weeks
went and did car things with one of my uncles and cuzns and one of my kids went with us to Lemays in Tacoma

ordered some toys while I was gone so that they could come in while I was gone
new on/off switch for my mill
and not pictured is 6 9/16 end mill bits
picked the mini up from the body shop again today, its done much better this time, im happy but at the same time, the engine started to smoke white,
probably popped a head gasket again
I asked the body shop if they ran the car for a long time and they said only to move the car in and out of the paint booth
the engine fan isn't turning on from the switch, maybe the fuse popped not sure yet
maybe it over heated or something and thats why the head gasket popped
im going to do a compression test to see what numbers it has,
hope its not a cracked head, I dont know how much longer im going to keep this engine in this car
I kind of want to put the k24/automatic set up in the mini, k24 from my extra car, honda element
the three back windows are now installed into the mini and the boot lid and seal installed
I changed the glass on the pop out windows
getting the last pop out window frame back together was fun, that sucker that want to work with me, so a few clamps later and I was good
I ordered new mk2 tail light assy and door seals, $172 shipped with ups
the old door seals got some gray primer on them and I didn't really feel like trying to clean them, less work to just order new ones
door glass has been installed
tomorrow im going to work on installed the front windshield, going to put the seal on the glass and then work it onto the body, see how that works out for me

I have the outer window seal on the door off right now, and the glass fit into the door no problems
I put some lube into the glass channels at the bottom, and also some on the rollers and also I put some on the gears,
the windows roll up and down pretty easy
the channels that the glass slides in on the sides, those are old ones but I replaced them 6 years ago with some from dsn classic

finally opened up my door inner and outer seals, 7 ent mini sent them from me, but they got them from mini spares,
the box from mini spares was bent in the mini, and the box from 7 to me was fine
im alittle upset with 7 from sending me this crap
I sent them a email but since its sunday I have to wait for them to open tomorrow
I was going to paint the chrome od green, so I can fix the dents by hitting it from the inside, but at the same time, why?
its 90 bucks plus the ride for the parts
super upset with 7 at this point in time
today turned out better
I was able to get one of my flat plate uca on the truck,
7 ent mini shipped me a new set of door seals
I just hope they get here in time, as the summer rain feels like its coming soon

7 ent mini sent me new window seals for free, super happy now
they taped wood to the four sides of the box, the seals came in good
I taped them off and painted the chrome bits od green
the new seals are on the car now, just in time because the summer rain is coming, any day now, its looking like it wants to rain now
Wow, I didn't think you guy's monsoon season was till August?
I wondered if they used wood this time!

I wondered if they used wood this time!
the last one was shipped with ups and the box was bent in the middle, so wood to make sure the box dont get beat up in shipping and bend the window seals
monsoon season starts June 15 and ends Sept 30th, but the weather has been weird, its raining at other places around us but seems to kind of go around my street and skip us
I can smell the rain in the air but nothing yet
this morning I started to build a 8x7 shed in the back yard, its going to hold the bicycles and extra mini parts to get them out of the garage to give me more space
so far I built the base of the shed out of 4x4, took alittle more then 5 8ft sticks for the base, I plan to cover that with some 3/8's ply wood, so far I have 1 hour into build time
I had to pick up more air line to run line from my garage compressor to the back corner of the back yard, so far 100ft, but ones I start working on the roof, I may need another line
I picked up a wall locker for the garage for more space, to hold parts and tools
im trying to make room for a 20 ton shop press, I want one with a air bottle jack when will start out with a regular bottle jack
Best thing I did was to build a shed in the back yard for the mower, genset and all the gardening stuff. I'll bet 8X7 won't be nearly big enough for you! ;D
Shop press is a very handy thing to have, you don't need it often, but when you do - it's not one of those things you can borrow easily from a buddy.

19 hrs to fill the pool
That looks inviting! Kids will love that 77.gif
How's the evaporation rate out there?
A solar cover will help reduce the evaporation factor a bunch. It is like a bubble-wrap product that floats on the water. You cover the pool when not in use and it reduces the evaporation as well as the chemical burn off.
Yea friends pool had that growing up. Down side was one day with the cover on and the water temp would be north of 80.

today i cut the lower lip off the front clip, it was to low and i jacked it up on the driveway
i need to work on fitting that rubber trim part alittle better, but i ended up painting the lower half of the front clip
and repainted the hood
and painted the rocker panel area of the car od green
and worked on the trans cooler trim and grill
i picked up more allen head bolts for it
and will need to paint them
Looks very purposeful.....are you driving it much yet?
not a lot, I still need to do a few small things
mostly I drive it to pick the kids up from school, like 1-2 times a week
just day time driving it around because I dont even have the front turn signals installed right now
and I dont have a plate light on it right now, in the day time thats fine but night time, cops wont be happy with that
but I got some slim low pro lights to use for the plate, im going to install those tomorrow morning
and I dont have the wiper arms on it, not that I really need them
turn signals for the front will go in tomorrow morning as well, I have everything, its just a matter of doing it between other projects and the rain

I pulled the stock honda air bag steering wheel, and im changing out the stock del sol upper dash switches
the haz switch is now one from a 2000 civic,
the aux light switch is a led light switch
and the cruise main power switch is now one from a 2004 civic

the 2004 civic cruise and the 2000 civic haz switch
the cruise switch was a straight up swap, same wire colors different plug size
the haz took alittle work, went from a 5 wire haz switch to the 2k civic having 8 wires
a red and a red/black wires from the switch went together to the red or red/black wire on the del sol side
and a green/white on the switch went to a green/orange on the switch
and the rest of the wires were simple, turn left/right wires and power and ground and ign

pulled the stock honda air bag steering wheel
the adapter is a nrg, im not super happy with it, it doesn't have anything for the horn wiring to connect to the back side, so I have to rig something up or move the horn switch
but I like the horn in the center of the steering wheel,
(https://i.ibb.co/LzVyDcF/61-Pj-IN384-FL-SL1280.jpg) (https://ibb.co/jvnY9QN)

2000 civic haz switch, super simple to wire
just have to figure out how and where to mount it
and build a dash would be nice
not having a dash gives it a huge project look, lol

with the 4 lights on, I think its with the hi-beams as well
4-led lights
The bounce back reflection of the square lights is interesting!
So many little details to do, I guess that's what keeps us off the streets and out of the bars, huh? 77.gif
I love it tho, working on projects and learning stuff and getting better at jobs to take the build to the next level, small details
Working on the car is fun to me
wired up the plate lights last night
super simple, two single lights with a single led in each one
im working on back up lights and rear fog,
im going to be use some stock Harley parts for those
I have to run full wiring for the fog light, plan to use a led switch
and the back up wiring is done already, stock honda green/black wire
and then im looking into wiring a 3rd brake light, but I have to look up the wiring colors for it and figure out where I tapped off the stock honda wiring for that
the harness is stock, I haven't cut any plugs off of it, just tape them off if I didn't need them
didn't want to cut something and then have to add it back in later, plus then I can t/s the wiring like a stock eg civic or del slow

working on rear fog light and 3rd brake light, and back up light
rain came so that work got cut short today
but I ran the wire for the fog light inside the shell already
and figured out where the wiring is for the 3rd brake light

had to do alittle adjusting of the shifter to get the electric switch to line up
but it works now

working on installing the quick disconnect for the steering wheel
My 09 Clubman has only one back up light from the factory (cheap bastards) and I can't see shit behind me - does this one light throw enough back there for you to see?
My classic has two lights and I can see fine when backing it up

What seats are those? They look way comfy!
ebay seats, they are kind of big but they feel great
without the roll cage, the install would have been so much better
only thing I dont like about them is the slider adjustment handle, it keeps popping off but the way I set it up, I dont care if the seat dont adjust
im going to do the same for the drivers side, set it for me and thats it, no one else will ever drive my mini, so I dont care, as long as im good with the seat spot
Is there a link? What did they cost?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/FULL-RECLINABLE-PVC-CARBON-STYLE-LEATHER-RACING-SEATS-ADJUSTABLE-SLIDERS-RAILS-/401510535236?txnId=777625340027
$228 bucks shipped
I don't know how long the vinyl will last but I don't drive the car a lot
My other classic buckets were vinyl
So I'm sure it will be fine for the most part
I wonder if I could mod the del slow sliders to work on these seats.....hummm
I got these seats back at the beg of May, they have been sitting for a long time
Most of the parts I have for the mini have been sitting,
The led headlights where a Christmas gift
I'm thinking of going back to classic mini seat belts, ordering some new ones in black color
Will probably order them from mini sport USA
7 has them for 75$ each
I bought a set of seatbelts from MiniSport - they're in my Racing Green car - and they're OK, but the set I bought from MIniSpares to put in the Innocenti seem better - the nylon webbing was slightly thicker and they felt higher quality. Both were similar prices, but I think the Spares ones were just a bit cheaper.
How do those seats feel? I'm always on the lookout for some good seats for Minis, as the originals are pretty awful. I put Miata seats in my Clubman Estate and they were pretty good, I had to make brackets of course, but they fit well and I could slide them all the way back to the front edge of the back seat, plus they sat lower.....

I hated the stock seats
and then I found someone selling some classic bucket seats with head rests, I picked them up for $50, at the time I fit into the seats fine, I was a lot smaller and weighed less......these seats https://usa.minisport.com/cobsfx051-black-vinyl-with-head-rest.html
now I can only use those seats for short distance, im a lot bigger now, 6ft 210lbs, and the hip area is to small for me
so my kids use them as gaming chairs
and then I went to some K11 Nissan Micra seats, those were super comfy, a lot of padding on the bottom and back, I used to drive from
RAF Mildenhall in England to Spangdahlem AFB in Germany in a Nissan Micra, all the time, and thats why I love those seats, my butt never hurt from the drive
but on the rebuild of my car this time around, I put the stock del slow seats into the mini because they are skinnier
but I didn't want to pay to get them recovered and some of the foam was messed up from getting in and out of the car
so I found these new seats last May on ebay
they have a good amount of padding and feel comfy and the hip area is wider, and has good size lats support,
so I can see myself doing road trips in them
I think I set the front of the seat around 3-4 inches off the floor and the rear around 1 inch or so, so the sliders can move is need be
and lean the top back
the only problem I see so far is the bar for the adjustment keeps coming off, and the top dont lean forward much, so if you bolt the rear of the seat to the floor, you probably wont be able to fit people into the back seat area
im fine with that, because im not going to put the back seat into my car, im going to move my stereo amps into the back seat area
my driver's seat is so far back, that its pointless to have a seat in the back because it has no leg room
also it helps to move the passenger weight as far back into the car
im still looking for seat belts,
I started to look at summit racing
I have some 4 point belts from them, but I dont want to daily drive or cruise with 4 point harness seat belts on

Yeah, those MiniSport style seats are made for people with the hips of a 13 year old boy! Miserable for any real sized adults....

i painted the mirror green to see how it looked but i think black is going to be better
it was bed lined black and then painted pd green and now its black again
I put it on the car with it being green but I forgot to take a picture
so this morning I painted it black again
and because its raining its tail off, its taking alittle more time to dry
but its been going off for about 2 hours now
not working on the mini today
last night I was getting ready to paint the other side, tapping off the glass and I dropped it like a ............ I was so mad at myself
but I found a guy selling a pair on cragslist here, from a sportster, so it should be the same

yeha big time, they work great for xbox chairs but other then that they suck
ive had double hip surgery, and since then I have gained around 25lbs and am having a hard time dropping it, spare tire is getting big, lol
in AZ, I only need two mirrors in the car and im good......but the stock mini mirror sucks
I asked my brother if he has anymore stock Harley mirrors laying around, he said he will give a look
but I need to search online to see if stock sportster mirrors are the same as stock fxr mirrors
but I was also thinking of maybe taking the mirror to a glass place and have them cut me another mirror for it

this is how i am mounting the motorcycle mirrors to the car
i welded two 1/4 nuts to the door skin, and those nuts stick out from the door skin around 1/8 inch
and the plate, I milled out the backside for the two nuts, and the plate is made for each door to fit tight over the 1/4 inch nuts
and then I used some allen head bolts to hold the mounting plate to the door skin
black mirrors with green plate on the door

my mini got to hang out with its younger brother
2007 1.6, troubleshooting the check engine light
it has a code P0011, 12, and if I remember right, it had a 14 and 16 as well
but its also popping for the oil change, so I told my neighbor to change the oil and then see if those codes come back
im thinking the vanos sols are going out, but I know those newer Bini's start acting up when they need oil changes done, and
I have no idea what oil they are using, but I dont think its the castrol oil that minis call for
YEP = agreed
I have a 06BMW 530 with two vanos solenoids Inline 6 Cyl.. when she does go a bit over on oil changes it will throw this code.
Oil change recommend also pulling the Variable valve solenoid and simply spraying it clean with brake cleaner.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPrFXKPI8H4 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPrFXKPI8H4)
Oh = Nice progress on your mini build too!
These turbo engine cars are definitely sensitive to oil changes, they have to be done once a year or every 10K miles. They not only can sludge up the Vanos, but they also get sludge in the oil return line to the block, and that can kill the turbo. I use Mobil1 that I buy at Walmart in the 5 qt containers, usually on sale for like $22. Buy the filter from the dealer - unless you can find a Wix brand locally - the other aftermarket filters are crap.
The other issue especially with these early turbo cars was the timing chain - they had a LOT of problems with the tensioners, guides and chains on these. The final version of the repair kit seems to be OK and lasts well, but def check it for chain stretch and make sure it has the latest tensioner at least.
The tensioner is easy to change, it sits up high on the back of the head on the right side, and just screws into the head. You might change it just on general principle.

I think its a non turbo engine
but im not 100%, I dont know to much about the bini's besides the R53's
ive only worked on R53 newer bini's because I had one for a bit

two of them, the ones that hold the cluster
I need to drill holes into the other one but im thinking about removing it
and bending a tube for the top of the dash
maybe a 1inch by .65 dom tube for the upper bend of the dash.....I have to go see what the metal yard has in stock for dom tube
and just sheet metal it and cover it in vinyl

billet rear hub bearing caps from mini sport came in today
also the new black front seat belts came in
im still playing around with caster setting on the car, make adjustments and then test drive and see how the car feels and see if I like the feel
so far im 3 days into alignments

pic just to show the alignment tool, but im doing the work on flat ground
the awesome thing about having my alignment tool is I can try as many different numbers as I like and if I dont like it, I can change the specs till I find what feel good to me
What numbers are you running? A lot depends on whether you're going for an ultimate canyon carver or a nice cruiser....
In front I run about 3° caster
1/2-1 1/2° negative camber
Tiny bit of toe out
In the back 1/2° negative camber
tiny bit of toe in
this seems to be a good road setup both for regular driving and canyon carving. Obviously the more camber you run the twitchier it is just going down the road, but the better it will turn in.
I'll be interested to see what you wind up with as your best solution.

im playing around with the caster setting,
have been setting camber to -.5
and playing with toe out between 1/16-1/8
and -.5 camber in the rear and 1/16-1/8 toe in for the rear
its kind of fun to try a different setting and see how the car reacts to it
haven't worked on the mini for a week or two now, haven't been feeling the greatest, my head has been killing me the last few weeks
so today I made myself get out to the garage and do something
I started out with some 1/2 inch t6160 alloy plate and cut it down to build this wedge
(https://i.ibb.co/3BbqZ70/69515715-816031288795308-6453542138696171520-n.jpg) (https://ibb.co/KFgkvX9)

the mirror needed more adjustment inward to the mini, so I can see out of it...if its going to be on the car it has to function, or its just added weight

new and old mount
I painted the underside of the mount, and just waiting for it to dry before flipping it over to paint the top side
I plan to get it mounted back on the car today

lol
still waiting on paint to dry, it feels dry but soft at the same time
but we have rain coming in, so I put the other mirror mount back on for the time being, to seal the holes in the door
the new mount should be good tomorrow
I hope the mount gives me the inward movement, im just kind of guessing at this point
if its not good, then I will go and get some 5/8's alloy plate and build it over again.....gives me a reason to use the mill more, lol
I get a 10% discount on the metal and I get it from the left over cut section and its a ton cheaper then normal price
I have done anything to the mini in a few weeks, its been super hot here and im waiting for the summer heat to be gone,
so I started another project to take my mind off the mini for a bit

yeah, everyone is good
kids are still doing home schooling, so im pretty much the teacher now or baby sitter, lol
so working on projects has slowed down alot
they are about to get 2 weeks off from school, so thats going to be nice
im cleaning my garage right now, i recycled 800lbs of metal the other day, and i got a 2nd load im about to take but its not as big
im taking a job north of salt lake city.....so i gotta let alot of stuff go, so that i can keep alot of my audio gear
so im just getting ready for the move, moving is always alot of work, but its a good time to trash alot of stuff thats not needed

im thinking about lifting this mini, or maybe the od green mini, not sure yet
but a small lift would be nice for winter driving in the snow in Utah,
i do have my awd honda pilot, so a mini wont be a daily in the winter, but more for fun then anything
the d16z6 in the green mini starts to smoke white when the engine gets hot,
i think i got a cracked head,
besides that, the motor runs good
i mean, ive done the timing belt, water pump, head gasket with new head bolts, crank pulley,
oil pan gasket and front and rear main seals
im not sure how much longer im going to stay with this d16z6 motor in this car
unless i find another head for super cheap

i built a pair of these horns, they are 22x14, and sport 4, 1inch horn drivers on the back of them, they get crazy loud with a small amount of power
they are made with 16ga sheet metal and then i used bed liner to try and dampen them down,
they are on the bright side but thats how i like my tweeters to be

helped my uncle with this, 2.5 week rebuild of his 94 k2500 chevy truck
2004 lm7 5.3 with 4l60e, and obs t case
5.3 has a summit 4x4 cam in it
this truck was straight nasty, the frame had dirt inside of it, but my uncle got a 4000 psi pressure washer from a friend, and took half day or so to clean it out, half day to dry, and then 2 days for por 15, primer and paint the frame and underside of the cab
did the rear brakes shoes and gear oil, front axles, upper arms, lower ball joints,
radiator core support bushings were replaced, and everything was taken off and cleaned and painted pretty much

i lifted the body from the front and rolled the body and crane back to get the drivetrain out from the shell and then lowered the body down and put some jack stands on the steering rack
im uploading a video to you tube right now lifting the shell up
right now i have a manual chain set up, but i want to swap that out for a electric hoist on the crane
i got the crane on sell from hf, paid $620 for it

lifting the shell up
Gantry crane sure makes it a lot easier - i agree with the idea of the electric hoist on the trolley. Just get one with the remote controls - wireless is even better!

i used a 20ft strap and lifted the shell from 4 points, and dropped the rear subframe out and then put the two pallets under the middle
i used 5/16 screws to put the wheels onto the pallet, all 4 wheels can turn, and i think they are 4 inch or 5 inch wheels from hf
im probably going to get the electric set up over the july 4th weekend, waiting for everything to go on sale

Fun.....like you don't have enough projects already! ;D
What's the plan for the van?
I know, I have alot of projects Hahahh
I wanted the rotisserie tool, but the guy gave me the van and the 3 engines,
So I took it
I think the van, ones I fix the floors in it, and other rust spots,
The van will go on the cj7 frame
4x4 mini van with a 5.3/4l60e should be awesome
