I have my carb apart, and have the opportunity to have it machine cleaned, but I'm curious about this little plastic-looking plug on the bottom of this piece. Rebuild kit didn't come with a new one, and it doesn't look like it will come out without damage.

Does this stay in place? Thanks

Yes, it stays in place.  I do not know its purpose, but it looks to be similar to a grub screw plugging a milling hole.

As I continue to rebuild and install my carb, I am having a problem with the choke return spring. I can get it wound up and get the whole linkage back together, and it will still pop loose. I'm reusing the old linkage and springs (in good shape) but have converted the jet to standard, using the conversion kit wire.

Sorry I don't have a pic, after the last time it popped loose I left it on the bench and walked away for the day.

any suggestions?

I think that plastic buttony thing is a 'bumper' which prevents the piston from slamming too hard onto the bridge.

Choke spring is a royal PITA on an HIF, I don't remember what it looks like on an HS so a pic would help.
Complete failure at retirement - but getting better!

Don't know if it helps but here is one still put together. Last picture is with choke almost fully rotated to the full on stop, the other 3 I had it partially rotated since without the jet parts it seems like it over rotates the other direction.

Thanks! Since last posted on this thread I've fiddled a little bit more and replaced the choke cable. Just buttoned up the electrical the other night, so all that's left is new front seatbelts and getting it to run.
