God no! I bought it because we were going to build a house in the country, I think I hauled a few loads of gravel for a driveway and that was it. I bought it in early spring, used it one summer then it sat over the winter and I never checked the engine for antifreeze and the block cracked.......I think I paid $300 for it, and while $300 was a lot of money at that point in my life I wrote it off ......

They're great bikes.  Small but fun.  They made a CB175 and a CB200 which would be pretty sweet and have a little more oomph.

Here's the dynamic duo.

Hey MiniDave,

The Abarth is long gone. It was a 1960 raced since new. I figured out almost all the owners. SCCA race history with pics and other racing history. Total basket case, it actually came in boxes. I got it on its wheels but lost interest. I regret selling now but oh well.

Some of you guys have ADD!  Cool to see some of you man enough to admit some of them.  I have trouble picturing you driving a Chevette, Jim!   ;D

Yeah that Vette was a low point for me. Trust me.

Story time:

I inherited it with the newly acquired wife, it was her first car, it was slid over to me and she got the drive the 300ZX. She worked in town and I worked 40 miles away I initially commuted in the Supra. Traded that in on the 300 and the Vette got the commuting duties.

Eventually I bought the Honda Civic, it had 80K miles on it when I bought it, I was told the timing belt was just done. At 100K miles the belt snapped, I had lent the car to my FIL and was driving the Chevette again when it happened.   FIL did not know what happened and kept trying to start it bending valves in the process. I drove down to his house, pulled the head and sent it out to be rebuilt. Ordered a new set of rings and did a slight refresh on the bottom end while it was open. I used a honing tool to rough up the cylinders and basically rebuilt the engine in his garage over a couple of weekends. Oh, the joy of having time but no money.

I finally got rid of that Civic after a few years, it had 240K miles on it when I was done with it. I put a lot of commuting miles on it and the timing belt was changed religiously at 60K miles every time after that.

Never trust anyone that says the belt was done, spend the money and get it done again so you are sure.

Back then I made $10 an hour we were broker that broke just trying to get started in life, but you know what? We were happy*, when we moved to Cape Canaveral I got a company truck from the place I was working for, that is why I sold the Civic.   We were so broke then, after paying our bills we would have $20 a week to get by on, that included food. We used a credit card for groceries slowly going deeper in debt. My old asshole boss kept promising me the world. I was working towards getting my Land Surveyors license and was sure once I passed my surveyors exam I was going to be living a much better life.

I passed, 16 hours of testing and I passed on the 1st try, which was unheard of at the time. That would come in to play big for me shortly down the road.  I was made VP of the company the boss wanted to semi retire and travel I was being groomed to take the place over and now with my license I was a big swinging dick there.

LOL!!  He gave me a raise to $14 an hour from $13 an hour. He only gave out raises in 25 cent increments so this was 4 years of raises in a moment. I should be grateful right?

I told him this was not going to work for me, but he had me, he had forced me to sign a non-compete, I could not work in that county for 1 year after leaving. Many of his competitors wanted to hire me away so he was smart to put some handcuffs on me. Keep in mind, I went from an apprentice to VP in 9 years there.

Fine I went 4 counties south to Palm Beach County and landed a job with a big company making $28 an hour, plus performance bonuses that could net me another $5-$8K a year.

I never looked back. Now that I own my own business and think about how he treated me I will never understand what his thought process was. I was doing the work of 3 people working my ass off for that guy, he paid me salary too. $14 an hour salary no overtime even though I typically worked 60 hours a week for him.

Oh, I landed that job in WPB because I was one of the 18.  There were 124 people in that room taking the Surveyors Exam that weekend, 18 passed. I was one and there was a buzz in the industry (unknown to me) that only 18 passed. The buss was more about claiming the test was too hard.  When the company found out I was one of the 18 they broke their rule and hired someone without a college degree.  Ironically my manager in the surveying department had a degree in Animal care he was supposed to be a zoo worker but got out of it. Somehow he was more qualified to be a land surveyor than I was because of this degree.

TLDR - Cliffs:

-Chevette was a low point in my life struggling to get a career going

- Eventually got a Honda

- Asshole cheapskate Boss

- Eventually got on my feet

- Never a Chevette again.

* Back in 2005 I complained to my wife about my business, I had 24 employees and it was like running a daycare. I am not getting into all the BS I had to endure but I was not happy and told my wife I missed the days when I was first starting out and my company had 2 people in it, I was one of them.

Then along came 2008.

Back to 2 people. To be honest, I was happier, it is a big part of the reason I will not hire now, I am not getting big again, I am turning work away instead. I am working a lot of hours now, so I am not 100% happy, I am trying to achieve one big financial goal, my mortgage gone again like in 2004. Once that happens I may either hire on help (1 or 2 people) or I may downsize again (I have 3 employees now) to 2 people including me and just work as much as I want.

When we were broke in the 90's we were happy, we have never been materialistic, we live in a meager home in a blue collar neighborhood and drive old cars.  Our foray into newer Audi's was a mistake and we learned our lesson. What we had a lot of in the 90's was time, even when I worked 50-60 hour weeks I was still home and work was turned off for the evening. Mostly because it was not my company. I try hard to shut that off at home now too. when you have a vested interest it is hard to do.
