Title: Cone Compressor
Post by: DS1980 on November 04, 2016, 01:08:12 PM
I have a stock 1972 mini that I will be replacing the cones. The compressor tool for metric only is reasonably priced, the dual thread not so much. Does anyone know if I would have the metric threads?

Any idea if they were ever replaced?
Not sure when the cutover to metric was but if they less than 20 years old, I would guess metric.
How clean are the holes, you could buy a long bolt to test the threads. But if they are rusty or caked with crud that might not help as they would not start easy.
Maybe someone local to you has one you can borrow?

I ended up renting one from MiniMania.

I have no idea if they've been replaced, if not, 45 years was a good run! Looks like I will just have to wait until I get it apart.

Thanks for the heads up about the tool rental. I may have to do business with MM one last time.

Looks to be about a wash between rental and purchase. Yay for a weak pound!!

You can also make your own with a length of proper threaded rod.

As long as you know whether it's metric or English threads......

I bought a length of 14mm allthread and a couple of nuts and washers and used a short piece of pipe I had lying about, my car is later than this one tho......

Where are you located?  I have one with both metric and SAE ends I may be willing to loan.

See if anyone in MOTR (Minis of the Rockies) has one to loan.  If not, let me know and I will see what flat rate box it will fit inside for sending on loan.

If Darren Haines is back there he may have one.
