Title: Upper arm torque spec.
Post by: John Gervais on March 12, 2016, 04:49:56 PM
I'm curious what torque spec to use for the large nut on the upper suspension arm pivot shaft.

My Haynes (both the blue and purple books) state 53 lbs/ft (72Nm) and the old workshop manuals list the Front Suspension Upper Arm Pivot Pin Nut (which I presume is the large shaft nut) at only 26 - 28 lbs/ft (35 - 38 Nm).  Maybe I've misread the factory manuals (AKD1181B & AKD4935B)?

I've previously tightened them to 53 lbs/ft, but maybe it's not necessary to go so tight?

So, what have all of you used?

You are correct both blue books show 53 ft lbs.
I have always used 55 ft lbs

I remember that I used the figure given in the Blue Haynes last time, but when I was checking out the factory manuals, I got a bit curious.

Unless I'm misreading something, there's quite a difference between the two references.

I got the upper arms painted with a coat of POR15 silver (couldn't find any chassis black) today, so I'll give them a couple of days to dry, install the new bearings and hopefully install them before next winter.
