I am looking at the 998 in the corner of my garage and while I drained the oil and coolant out of the bottom when I removed it 3 months ago,  I am not sure what the best method of storing it is.  I did put a plastic cover on it and its up on a pallet .   Its my auto box engine and while I was wanting to put a manual in the car,  I don't want anything to happen to this engine as it is  in good condition.  Hell I may decide to have the engine gone through and keep it, barring someone wants to tackle the auto trans part of it.   Either for a spare or for another project ...I'm not sure what, but I know I don't want it ruined.

What I want to know is do  I need to pull this apart a bit to insure that some coolant isnt stuck in a crevice somewhere and rusting it up? Or should I be doing something else to it ?

Pull the plugs and squirt a little oil in there then put them back, spray a little in the intake ports and tape over them if the intake manifold is off.... tape up any openings with duct tape and keep it bagged up tight and it should be good....

Sounds good, will do....thanks Dave.

If you are able to turn the engine over, the best thing to do for engine storage is treat it with a VPCI product. A sitting engine doesn't wear, it rusts. This is a huge issue in aviation where private airplanes will sit months at a time in the winter months.

Someone suggested this to me:

I had a block with no head or trans so it was easy to spray on and into the engine

What Dave said + around here in the spring we get some wild temp swings that cause moisture to from on metal as it warms, or if you're in a humid area. I find throwing a few silica packets in the bag with the engine really help and seal up the bag as good as you can that'll keep new moisture from entering.

I definitely needed some advice on this....thanks all for helping .

If you decide to go through this engine, let me know I'd be happy to do the work for you - automatic and all.

definitely Dave,,,,I am going to have something for you to work on.....Dan has mentioned an engine possibility or two he may have and I am hangin in to see how that rolls out.  With the auto , I have no concerns about resale value on the car if it goes back in it.  It would make it easy for my wife to drive and this thing is really going to be for putting  around town .  I am only going off  of  some bad press they seem to have received due to poor service intervals.  I know mine runs pretty smooth and probably could be gone through and have the JPAT master rebuild  kit thrown into it and I would have no problems dumping oil every 500-1000 miles on it to insure proper function.  Could redo this auto , use it for a bit and pick up a manual  998 or 1275 soon   with plans to redo it at a slower pace and build it up to be a bit more burly for future  replacement.     I also read a technical article  here http://members.tripod.com/austin_america/id82.html that details machining an auto block to mate up to a manual gear box...sounded interesting .....too many possibilities.
