A fellow over on the VW forum keeps burning up coils and then indicated he had been mounting his coil upside down. Which posed the question can you mount it upside down.  Well as it turns out coil manufacturers say not to mount it upside down because not only can the oil leak out but the windings aren't submerged and it will result in coil failure. Makes sense, surprised I never really gave that any thought.  On our minis they're often times mounted on their side.  In the case of my Inno, it's sideways but more of a negative angle, effectively moving the oil to the top.  Well last year I kept killing those Tons performance coils that are correctly ohm rated for my distributor module. I went through a bunch before going back to a flamethrower and haven't burnt one up since. Which makes me think that not all are created equal internally and perhaps some have more oil than others. I'm going to redo the mount so it's more upright anyways after researching this, but half tempted to try the Tons coil again just to see if that's really what the problem was. Something to keep in mind if you have issues with coils dying.
