I did the 3 day fast last year after listening to Dana talk about it. Wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be.

cstudep

My wife has been doing fasting for a few years now, and since she does most of the cooking I end up playing along when she does some times. It's really not as hard as people think, just have to find something else to distract you for the first 12-14hrs or so, once you get past that it seems to get easier.

I was listening to someone the other day (PHD level biologist of some sort) taking about dry fasting, I had never heard of it. They have done up to 7 days before no food, no water, no nothing. Mostly to prove the point that you don't actually die after "3 days of no water". They don't recommend it as something for everyone, need to be in somewhat good health to begin with, and also something you work up to if you do try it. They gave biological reasons as to why it could help with a lot of things people suffer from. She has had chronic pain issues for years from a boat accident that nearly killed her and the intermittent dry fasting has actually helped tremendously with that pain. It was interesting if nothing else.

It's really sad what they put in our food when you start looking at the labels.

Quote from: ADRay on September 22, 2024, 05:38:07 AMas I read this, I am pedaling away on a Peloton bike that wifey brought home in January. I've been able to squeeze in 20 minutes a day first thing in the morning. I used to commute daily as a student in Boston on a bmx bike, and I really missed the feeling after a good ride.

That and (trying to) not consume beer everyday, and the vegan or vegetarian meals that wifey makes during the week, I've managed to avoid my high end weight fluctuation this year (so far anyway).

Traditionally I would float between 175-185, (I'm 5'9 and kinda lean) usually the high end being mid summer and mid winter. when I'd hit 185, my clothes start feeling tight and uncomfortable and it's time to watch the intake.

Riding the Peloton has kept me at the low end of my weight, and my goal is to get to 165. also the cardio benefits are noticeable after 8 months too.

And it should be noted, I just get on the thing, put on a scenic 20 minute ride, no anudio, and read my news feed. I don't go in for any of the guided classes or any of that.

Nice!!!  My wife got us a tread back in 2020 just before the shitshow started - we now have all 3 but the tread gets used the most.

What's your Peloton screen name?  I'm 'Munney'...I'm an army of 1 in the hashtag I created - 'MINIMotorers' - join me!

Following this thread, could use a dose of health.  We've done the 'Whole 30' a few times - crazy what your body goes through when you cut out all the processed crap - literally feel hung over.

Our fellow mini brother Dean (Dooder the guy who makes the shirts) went on a weight loss mission a year or so ago and shaved off 75+ lbs.  He just eats meat and nothing else.  I think he's down another 10lbs since we all traveled up to SD to the mini meet together.  I've listened to a few others talk about an all meat diet and how well it's worked for them.

My wife recently had a battery of blood work done.

The previous blood work showed some markers for inflammation, the doc wanted to wait one more cycle before addressing it.

Ironically the Protandim knocked that out of her system. When the doc saw the new bloodwork she was speechless, she told my wife she never saw these levels in someone her age. My wife let her in on out little secret.   I think they just got a new client. LOL

This shit is legit.

Quote from: 94touring on September 20, 2024, 06:33:06 PMFunny going back and reading this from 6 years ago.  No way I can maintain that 147-150lbs anymore.  Mid 150s is about it.  I did pork up to 171 for a bit by indulging on my trips.  About to purchase a bike to ride the trails around where I live. Maybe I can shave a few more pounds off.

Evidently I was wrong.  I have for the past few months been strict on diet and staying very active. A lot of walking. Sanding Brants mini has helped fast track weight loss too. I hit 148lbs and have been maintaining 150 +/- a couple pounds for a solid month now. That includes an international trip, where all weight loss gets thrown out the window typically.  Had a cheat day of beer drinking but that didn't negatively effect me.

I did that a couple of years ago with fantastic results. I keep wanting to do it again, I will soon. I never felt better when I was on what some call the Lion diet.

New addition to the home gym. I surprised the wife with this last week. She was out of town in NY helping her niece pick out a wedding dress.

The timing of this purchase worked out perfectly. It arrived via freight on a pallet the day after she left, I had to scramble in the evenings to assemble it. The instructions sucked.

200 lb stacks on each side, we are all really happy with this addition to the home gym.

Bernadette got into town last week and I immediately got her a bike. We've been riding early in the morning or after the sun sets.  If we aren't riding bikes I've been taking her on my standard walking routes.  6-8 miles depending along the river trails.  I'm happy to report I'm able to wear out an acrobatic performer.  Yesterday we spent the day working at the shop cleaning and moving the remaining items from downtown out there as I turn a bonus room at the condo into a big walk in closet. After dinner I said bikes or a walk tonight and she looked at me like I was crazy.  We ended up taking the evening off from exercise.  Haven't exactly shaved any weight off this past week because I've been cooking so much showing off my culinary skills.  Or we're driving around and she wants to try various American crap food to compare to the Philippines. Inevitably I end up eating things I would typically avoid like the plague.

I expect she'll get her fill of that fairly soon....I don't think I've been in a Big Mac or other fast food type place in many years.....I avoid them like the plague.

If you guys have a Texas Road House, you should take her there for sure at some point.....

She asked what Texas road house was.  At the risk of sounding like a snob, I'll take her to get steak at 2 different high end places downtown. One has a table steak that is entirely too much for about $200 and the other is wagu you can cut with your fork for about $180 for 2 people.

For the last 6 months I have been really dedicated* concerning working out and strength training. I have been taking this supplement that is specifically formulated for men over 50 that is supposed to help with muscle gains for geriatrics like me. LOL!

I have to say, it seems to be working, my gains in muscle and strength have been remarkable.  2 months ago, we were out on our evening walk with the dogs, my wife kept looking over at me in a tank top. I finally asked what was up, she said she could not believe how much my body changed in a such a short amount of time. My chest has filled out, my arms are noticeably bigger, my back has spread a bit too.  I can feel it as much as she is noticing it.

I had to expand my Power Block weights recently to add another 20 lbs of weight as I was maxing them them out.  The strength gains have been nothing short of amazing.

As I was about to hit 60 years old, I decided to try to step up my exercise routine and get serious.

*There was a setback, my wife and I both caught some sort of stomach bug in Mexico about 3 weeks ago, we were both sick for close to two weeks. We finally had to give in and get our doc to prescribe antibiotics to settle things down. Great for weight loss, bad for exercise.  I was so depleted I had to take a couple of weeks off.  I am finally back to normal. I start hitting it hard again next week.

It is great to have a home gym, there are some days when the only time I have is at 9 at night.  So easy to just walk into the back room and get a good workout in. When we were at a resort in Mexico using the gym there, I was getting frustrated, I am not used to sharing with others anymore. I LOVE having my own space.

Power Blocks are a poor mans version of the Bowflex adjustable dumbbells.

What is the supplement if you dont mind me asking? Just curious, I have been trying to work out more again lately and somewhat messed up my shoulder I am afraid in the process. Getting old is not for the faint of heart lol.

The power blocks are better than the bow flex adjustables IMO, I have a set I have had for ages, but usually use my Rep Pepin's these days just because they are faster to adjust.

Copious amounts of viagra.

Myself personally I just walk and ride my bike.  Not Lance Armstrong riding.  Old man with a fat seat cruising.  I do push-ups too. Just things to keep the body moving. Eating healthier and cutting sugar.  From my fattest a few years ago of traveling the world eating, drinking, and indulging, I'm down 30lbs and back to my old self.

Wait for a sale, its expensive, when you catch a sale you can get it for more than 50% off. I restock when there is a sale.

I don't want to call it a protein powder, it only has 15mg of protein. I also toss about a teaspoon of creatine in with it when making a shake, typically right after a workout.

I will give a better review later, I have a lot going on ATM.

I just finished for the night, about to jump in the pool before I hit the shower.

The Muscle Defense really seems to work well, I barely get sore despite pushing really hard. I have noticed muscle gains in my 50's, muscle memory possibly?  I used to be a lot bigger build wise, I am a lot smaller now, trying to fix that.

I also noticed I barely get sore, is it the muscle defense of is it the creatine?  Not sure, maybe both?

OR is it the Protandim NRF1, NRF2 and NAD that I have been taking for about 2 years now?

No idea, I can say this, I felt better physically turning 60 than I did turning 50.

My goal is to keep this up, keep exercising and trying to build as much muscle as I can before my body refuses to anymore. I also feel the Protandim has alleviated a lot of inflammation as well as setting my biological clock back many years.

Is any of this cheap? Nope! Except at 60, I am not going down without a fight, I want to be strong and active well into me 80's.  I am investing hard now to make sure that is a possibility.

LOL, I'll keep that in mind.

I have actually been trying to put some "healthy" weight on the last 3-4 months or so. I somewhat inexplicably lost about 15-20lbs over a month or 2 period some time back and just can't seem to put any back on. Not lost any more either. Had a whole battery of blood tests, etc and everything checked out ok. I just feel like I have lost a lot of strength lately and I dont like it, so trying to rectify that.

I used to ride a bike a lot back in the day but the roads around here I can ride on are not real bike friendly. I wish they were better because I always enjoyed it. We eat pretty healthy generally and rarely eat out so we at least have that going for us I guess.

Thanks I'll take a look, I'm pretty particular when it comes to any sort of supplements, most cost a lot and seem to actually do very little.

One thing I really wish I had is a pool, I feel like my old abused joints would appreciate the low impact cardio lol.

We are the same in our house, rarely eat out, I do not trust restaurants generally use good ingredients.  At home we purchase all our proteins online, Butcher Box is our main source, Snake River Farms and Florida Premium Beef are also used. We also hit up our corner fish market for fresh fist at least once every 2 weeks.

When we go out to eat, which is about once a week, we typically hit up little locally owned places that we know are sourcing local food.  Since I live in coastal Florida, fresh fish is a must.  We have a couple of places we like to visit where the fish changes daily based on what they could buy, that is how it should be here.

We went to a new place downtown a year or so ago, they were serving frozen fish. Never went back there is no excuse for that here.

I agree with the supplements, I was taking some snake oil shit in the past, my wife is really good at vetting supplements, I yield to her.   The Protandim was suggested by a Doctor who also uses it, I mentioned that here a page or two back.

I recently went for a full battery of blood and urine tests, as insane as this sounds, my first time in my adult life, 59 years I have never been under the care of a doctor outside my pediatrician as a child.

Blood work came back clean!  No markers for inflammation no indications of any problems. Typical deficiencies, low in Vitamin D and B.  Testosterone was 1/3 what it should be, doc has me on bio-identical T shots 2X a week.

I was reading the pamphlet for the T shots, everything they claim they will fix are not problems, makes me question why I need it. I am playing along for now.  Low energy?  LOL  No sex drive, LOL!  Unable to stay lean? I am very close to my fighting weight, my one vice in this world is a beer or two at the end of the day. If I cut that out of my life, and I do here and there, I drop weight like crazy. About to do that again very soon.

BTW - My wife hates me because I can drop weight any time I want, she also was amazed my blood work came back so damn clean.  I avoided doing that because I didn't want to know, turns out there was nothing to know. LOL

Anyone ever did a Cologuard?  My doc decided to do this over a colonoscopy.

If you have done this, you already know, its vile and disgusting.  That collection container is like 5" diameter by 5" deep.  Make sure you have not had any fiber before trying to use it.

Despite all that, I think I prefer this to a scope so I will suffer through it. I gave them an extra stinky sample. LOL  I cannot imagine opening those up all day long as a job, now THAT is a shitty job.
